Awful company & an awful service. No matter how many times you complain nothing changes other than the service gets worse. The paid service is the worst as some of the free servers (which you cannot access if you pay to subscribe) work so much better than the paid service. This isn't a problem I encounter every now & then but one that I encounter on a daily basis, multiple times in one day also. The subscription price is a bargain but a bargain price doesn't always guarantee a decent service. I have warned them about this & the not so nice review yet they don't seem to care & this seems to be common practice these days & I won't stand for it!

Started with the free version because I was broke. it's the only free vpn worth using - unlimited data, no speed caps, servers in five countries . Used it for months before upgrading to paid. Paid version adds more servers and features, but the free tier alone is better than some paid ones I've tried. Switzerland jurisdiction, can't complain

Both the free and paid vpn are painfully slow. Somewhen i cant even load low quality videos.

iif i could 0 stars i woulkd. they stole my money i payd for a preniem acount. after i payd with paypale. 72 euro i did not have the acount but i was charcged. shitty comepny dint buy it dont ude it dont support them.

Lousy service by degrading WiFi speed on my tv and phone services and had to manually start proton vpn despite auto connect is on.
I cancelled during the 30 day money back guarantee satisfaction. Unfortunately the only way to contact customer service is through email.
I wrote to customer service multiple times without any success to get my money back.
I had to call my credit card company to file a dispute.

I’ve been a Proton customer since 2022, and in the beginning I was a huge fan. They felt genuinely different from every other tech company. Privacy came first, they valued loyal customers, and it felt like they were building something for the long term rather than chasing short-term profits.

Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case.

Like so many other subscription services, Proton now appears to focus on attracting new customers with heavily discounted introductory offers, only to charge existing customers almost double when it comes time to renew. It’s disappointing because loyalty seems to count for very little.

When I raised my concerns with customer support, I was met with generic, robotic responses that simply pointed to the terms and conditions rather than making any effort to help. The experience felt impersonal and left me feeling like just another account number.

Proton still makes excellent products, and I still believe in their mission. But the way they now treat long-term customers feels no different from the big tech companies they once stood apart from. I genuinely hoped they would be different.

Massively regret purchasing this. I don't even care about VPNs, but the IT guy was saying they were essential. I did my research and chose Proton. Wish I hadn't.

The speeds were just OK for the first month, enough to browse with, but anything beyond that is impossible, it's just too slow, and it doesn't matter what country you choose.

Everything is so unreliable. You will be browsing, and gradually, everything will just slow down and eventually stop working. You turn off the VPN, and everything is quickly fine again.

It's so frustration.

At it's best, ProtonVPN provides moderate browsing speeds intermittently between outages that often happen multiple times per hour.

As a result, I don't even bother loading the app anymore because I hate the experience of not noticing how slow the internet has become before realising Proton is the issue.

I definitely will not be returning, and I regret buying the full twelve month package.

OFirst month was perfect and when the free month expired suddenly pages don't work, the sound and picture are in delay, need to refresh and change the host many times. It is super annoying and not really usable.

The customer service seems helpful, but in the end didn't manage to solve my problems and not willing to give back the money.

I recommend not taking this one and if you do, carefully read the small letters. I'm thinking to go to legal insurance about them, because this is a moneygrab.

Edit after the answer: they pretend they care to resolve, but unfortunately the service is unreliable and they are not willing to pay back the proportional subscription I will not use. So my comment stays, don't believe the helpful attitude, it's not true. I ended up working on this case for hours and they make sure they take so much of your time that you give up.

I'm surprised by all these negative reviews, I'm from Iran, one of the most censored internet countries, after experiencing 5 months of internet outages, Proton VPN still works well in Iran!
Also, I won a 1-year Plus subscription in the Proton VPN contest and I'm completely satisfied with its performance!

Useless, many websites detect Proton and block it. Proton makes it VERY difficult to cancel with many obstacles and long delays to their 'money back guarantee. AVOID, disreputable, useless.

I subscribed with the hope of connecting into BBC.IPLAYER but to do so I have to upgrade to the most expensive option. I feel that I subscribed under am illusion. Also I cannot find a means of unsubscribing. Can I get a refund

Nasty. Plain nasty. Their email service is allegedly secure but given the sh!show VPN service I've got my doubts on that.

The 'free' VPN wouldn't load. Trued re connecting to different random servers and nothing would connect at all - god knows what server infrastructure they're using. Won't be paying for any subscription with this lot any year soon - ill stay with NordVPN at least it connects first time round and looking at the other 900 or so reviews the message is resounding clear STAY AWAY!!!

I am using it right now! Has been solid and easy to configure.

Bought pro for 1 month for the purposes of using this on holiday. It took 2.5 weeks to receive the upgrade from free version which was therefore too late. I requested a refund which has not been provided despite my best efforts. They hide behind 'You've purchased it through apple so it is up to them whether it is to be refunded' apple will not allow refunds either.
Therefore they have taken my money and all i have received is the hinderance to try and solve the issue.

Terrible! Their verification code does not arrive. They make you upgrade and then do not send replies for days. When they do reply, it sounds like they never really read your email. Not recommended!

signed up for one month and they renewed my subscription for another month! i dont understand. on the subscription page, you get the choice of annual subscripton or monthly. i chose monthly and they continue renewing it!! how this is a monthly subscription then?

Edit: Tech support did reach out after I cancelled the subscription and offered to troubleshoot. It felt like a very long and involved troubleshooting process, so I declined and was granted a refund. I appreciate that.
Original: I was shocked that this was one of the top rated VPNs. After downloading it and connecting, I was actually not able to connect to the internet at all. An AI "troubleshoot" just gave me some bullshit about -- "oh you just have a very sensitive internet provider and if you do these 15 steps, you can probably connect" -- the whole point of the VPN for me is to be able to safely connect while I am out it the world -- I can't spend 10 hours troubleshooting every Starbucks public internet connection.

The promotional offers from this VPN service feel like a trap. I received a Discount Deal email, and they also advertise student discounts. However, whenever I click the offer, I’m unable to claim it because I must use the device I originally subscribed with. When I open the app on my phone, the discounted offer is nowhere to be found—only the regular price.

I contacted customer support, and they initially asked me to provide screenshots. After I sent everything they requested, they simply stopped responding. Their customer service has been extremely disappointing.

Because of this experience, I have cancelled my subscription and will be switching to a different VPN provider. I cannot recommend this service.
