Charged €605 after returning the car with no damage

I rented a car from RentSmart24 in Milan.

The car was returned after hours and no staff member was present to inspect the vehicle. I followed the instructions and left the keys inside the car.

The vehicle was returned with the same fuel level and without any damage. However, the company later charged my credit card €605.70 for alleged damages and fuel without providing any photographic evidence or inspection report.

I immediately contacted the company requesting proof of the alleged damage but received no response.

Because of this, I had to dispute the charge with my bank and file a consumer complaint.

Very disappointing experience. I cannot recommend this company.

This is a scam company

This is a scam company! If you booked a car from them online and paid for it, then be prepared that you will not be given it! Especially when the rental price is minimal! Managers either start extorting you to pay for expensive insurance or find fault with your bank card! In addition, if you received a confirmation of your check-in at the time of booking, this does not mean that you will be given a car! The task is to take money from you and appropriate it without providing a service! Run away from this company they are scammers

Not a s bad as feared…

I reserved a car at Venice and then read the reviews, I was horrified, but I was prepared for the worst. However, it was not as bad as feared. In fact, I was all prepared to give a good review until the end. They were polite, the shuttle bus was good. We just about got the car we asked for, 5 people and 4 big bags, luckily we did not have a 4th big bag. The car was not that old and in a good state. We had snow socks instead of chains. We needed to use the socks in the end. On return, because of the snow and ice I told them we might be late. They were helpful, but an extra day charge would be added if more than an hour late. We were not luckily. They did however charge us to clean the car, which we were not happy about. The car was covered in a weeks work of winter road dirt, nothing more. But it is in the contract you sign. Just price it higher with that included. But to be honest, as they are so cheap, a cleaning fee does not make much difference. Just have your wits about you

I was renting a car from them in…

I was renting a car from them in october 2025 in Bergamo. Everything was fine until I returned the car. After 1 month they come with a fee for the documents regarding a restricted driving zone, it was 36$ for the documents. I said ok maybe it was like this and I payed. After 2 more months they tried to charge me with another 136$ directly from my credit card saying that I have 6 more traffic violations without any evidence. Today, we are in February 2026 and they are still trying to charge money from my credit card. BE VERY CAREFUL

Strongly avoid RentSmart 24 if travelling to Milan- Italy

If you're considering renting a car in Bergamo, think twice before choosing RentSmart 24. I’ve rented cars all over Europe and beyond for years, and I can honestly say I have never experienced anything as disappointing and frankly outrageous as what happened here.
From the start, the experience was unprofessional. The shuttle transfer from the airport in Bergamo was unpleasant, with drivers openly swearing during the ride. It set the tone for what was to come. When I arrived at the office at 6:20 am — 40 minutes before my 7:00 am booking — the receptionist completely ignored me. Instead of appreciating punctuality, they only began processing my rental at 7:15 am, 15 minutes after my scheduled pickup time. The reception area itself was muddy and poorly maintained, which hardly inspires confidence in a company that claims professionalism.
The real shock came after I had already flown home. I received an email charging me around €360 for so-called “damages” and “cleaning.”
They fabricated a damage claim for a scratch supposedly so small it was thinner than a pen line, something that could likely have been wiped away or may not even have existed. The car was well preserved when I returned it. They charge included €60 for “cleaning” the vehicle, for alleged cigarette smell, despite the fact that I returned it in the same clean condition I received it, not even a small piece of paper left inside.
The timing felt calculated, sending the charges once they knew I was already flying away and unable to immediately contest the claims in person.
In my experience, this felt less like a car rental and more like a carefully designed system to extract additional money from customers through questionable damage reports and cleaning accusations. They may call themselves “Smart,” but in my view, it’s smart in robbery, not service.
I will never rent from RentSmart 24 again, and I strongly warn others to be extremely cautious. There are many car rental options in Bergamo. I strongly recommend choosing another company to avoid what I consider a deeply unfair and exploitative experience.

After 6 months of our trip this company…

After 6 months of our trip this company just charged me TWICE 36 € for apparently no reason. I haven't been given a notice or anything. I will fight this for sure.

Stay away from this company, seriously. The other commenters are right about this one.

CAFEFUL using Rentsmart24!

CAFEFUL if using Rentsmart24!! I hired a car in Venice recently. The shuttle service from airport to their car park was great however the car allocated to me had a lot of external damage, which I accepted since my rental price was reasonably low. When I returned the car, in pretty much the exact conditions, I was told I would be charged for extra cleaning inside because of a very few tiny mud marks on the driver seat and foot rest. Which could easily be wiped out by hand.. I should have done it before returning the car but they were so minimal I never thought they would penalise me. AVOID

Avoid Rentsmart24 at all costs.

The car I booked was unavailable on arrival and I was pressured into accepting a clearly sub-standard replacement. Despite this downgrade, there was no meaningful apology or attempt to make things right.

I was also convinced to purchase additional “protection” at the counter, even though I had already paid for equivalent coverage through a third party. This was only discovered later, turning what should have been a straightforward rental into an unnecessarily expensive and stressful experience.

Getting a refund for the downgrade required an unreasonable amount of time and persistence. Pickup and return were equally frustrating, with long waits that showed a complete disregard for customers’ schedules.

To make matters worse, I was charged an exorbitant administration fee for a traffic violation — a fee wildly disproportionate to the actual cost of processing it.

Overall, this experience felt less like customer service and more like a series of obstacles and upsells designed to extract as much money as possible. Poor transparency, poor service, and zero accountability. I would strongly recommend choosing another rental company.

Unauthorized charges and fraudulent billing Practices

Rentsmart24 engages in fraudulent and illegal practices. I rented a car from October 26 to 31, 2025, returned it without any damage, yet they charged my accounts multiple times for “alleged fines” in Italy.
Specifically:
- On November 15, 2025, they charged my first bank debit card without any prior authorization or direct debit agreement, exploiting a previous transaction.
- After I blocked that debit card, they charged my second bank credit card five times on December 5 and 11, 2025, for €36 each.
This was done despite my explicit request to remove all payment information and revoke authorizations under GDPR following the first unauthorized debit.
Rentsmart24 sends a “pseudo-justification” e-mail claiming that official documents will follow, yet they charge the account immediately without providing any official notification. According to their own contract, such fees (€29.51 excluding VAT) are only due after official notification of a fine, making these debits illegal. My brother experienced the same situation, and numerous public reviews describe the same pattern.
These actions clearly indicate a recurrent scam. Avoid Rentsmart24. They take money using fake fines and ignore all requests to stop debiting cards.

I paid and booked a Peugeot 5008 or similar and you gave me a Kia Spoprtage completely different with no compensation. Also I got an invoice for an alleged offence in a city entering an old town for their services. Never received the fine from Police

Title: Charged €400 for pre-existing scratches. Customer service ignores evidence. Avoid!
I strongly advise against renting from RentSmart24. My experience suggests their business model relies on charging customers for pre-existing damage.
I rented a car in Bergamo. Upon pick-up, the car was already in terrible condition – the official report listed over 20 pre-existing damages! I wisely recorded a video of the car before leaving.
Upon return (at 4:20 AM, outside office hours), I left the car in the same condition. Later, they charged my credit card nearly €400, claiming they found "new" slight scratches. These marks are indistinguishable from the heavy damage already present on the car.
When I sent them my video proof showing the car's condition at pick-up, they dismissed it, claiming I should have shown it to an agent "at the time of return." This was impossible because their office was closed at 4:20 AM!
It feels like a trap designed to extract money from tourists. They have been ignoring my emails for 3 weeks. Do not risk your money – choose a reputable company instead.

No functional cars

First car had no engine oil in it, was unsafe, so they replaced it after they tested it and they saw the emergency signals on the dashboard. Then 2nd car had the same issue but because it was late night they refused to exchange it, and recommended me to rent from somewhere else while it is too late for them to help me. But all places around were closed at that late time. It was horrible. Story is longer, but poor service and very poor customer care. I later managed to find and buy engine oil for the car, level in it was zero, I purchased it with my own money, and they are now not answering my emails with the request to refund my money spent for the oil. Cheap tricky company, please never use.

BEWARE OF RENTSMART24 – FRAUDULENT CHARGES AND TERRIBLE PRACTICES I want to share my experience so other travelers don’t fall victim to the same scam.

I rented a car in Italy (Bergamo) and returned it in perfect condition. A few days later, I was shocked to receive a €1093 charge for “windshield damage” that never existed. Here’s the breakdown:

€980 – “Damage charge”

€60 – “Damage processing fee”

+22% VAT on both

From the start, the process felt designed to trap customers:

✔ Forced contract signing before seeing the car – No staff showed me pre-existing damages.

✔ Rental agreement listed supposed windshield damage – I saw nothing wrong.

✔ No inspection at drop-off – Nobody checked the car in my presence.

✔ Email confirmed car was fine – Deposit refund promised.

Then suddenly, days later, they billed me for damage with only a blurry photo full of flash glare as “proof.” I asked for a video showing the license plate and damage—they refused. Luckily, I had recorded a video at pickup showing the windshield was perfect. This proves the charge is baseless.

A SYSTEM DESIGNED TO SCAM YOU

🚨 They require a credit card, enabling them to charge fees without your consent after the rental ends. Fighting these charges is a nightmare.

Questions I can’t ignore:

❌ Are they charging multiple customers for the same “damage” without fixing it?

❌ Will the next renter be billed for this same windshield?

After checking Google reviews, I realized I’m not alone—this is a pattern.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

⚠️ Avoid RentSmart24 at all costs.

⚠️ If you must rent, record detailed videos at pickup and drop-off—every inch of the car.

Our second experience (Pisa) – Another rip-off

We booked through DiscoverCars for €88 (including insurance). Before arrival, we provided ID, license, and flight details.

Upon arrival at 20:00, they claimed our reservation was canceled because it was booked for 10:00—even though they had our flight info! The only option? A new rental for €295.

Later, the invoice showed:

Rental: €43

Insurance: €45.50

Extra €296.50 for “premium coverage”—which I didn’t need because I already had coverage via my credit card.

Result: Paid €102 for the original booking plus €495 for the new one. Total rip-off.

BOTTOM LINE

RentSmart24 is dishonest, unprofessional, and predatory. Be smart—stay away from RentSmart24!

Booked thru Expedia. What started out as a rental with NU Car Rental became a rental with RentSmart24... Got a flat tire 3 days into a 5 day rental. Called roadside assistance, and they came and towed the car away. I thought they would repair the flat tire and return the car. Called NU car rentals, they said that I had to return to Florence Italy to get another car: two hours away. At least a half day roundtrip with two days left in our trip. Then received an $860 bill for the tire repair! Expedia offered ZERO help, said they just get the deals, I had to work with the car rental company directly.
