Sairu Hill Resort is inspired by the legendary love story of Sairu, a beautiful Mro princess who fell in love with the son of a king from a rival hill tribe. Their relationship was forbidden, and after the young man was forced to marry someone else, the heartbroken Sairu disappeared into the hills. Today, two intertwined trees at Sairu Point are believed to symbolize their eternal love, giving the resort its name and identity. Established through a partnership with Mr. Ranlai Mro, a respected Mro headman, the resort was created with the vision of promoting tourism while preserving the culture, traditions, and handicrafts of the local indigenous communities and creating employment opportunities for them. Located on a 12-acre hilltop in Bandarban at 1,742 feet above sea level, the resort was carefully designed to blend with the natural landscape by minimizing excavation, preserving existing trees, and using local materials such as bamboo, wood, and stone. The buildings are elevated on steel stilts to protect the natural contours and provide breathtaking panoramic views of the Sangu River, the Bay of Bengal, and the surrounding hills. Environmentally friendly features, including rainwater harvesting, water reservoirs, and extensive tree plantation, help maintain the area's ecological balance. Constructing and operating the resort has been highly challenging due to its remote location, difficult transportation, limited electricity and communication, and the need to pump water from a distant spring. Despite these obstacles, Sairu Hill Resort stands as a remarkable example of sustainable architecture, responsible tourism, and a strong commitment to preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Bandarban.
