Coffee is great but sent me a decaf with recommended rest time of 7-14 days. Not a problem usually bit it was roasted three weeks ago so already past its best!

A Year Admiring the Scenery

I first tasted Scenery coffee with Consuelo Rubio's Sidra release of 2024 as a guest pourover at a local coffee shop. Now I am drinking Consuelo Rubio's 2025 release. I can't recall every Scenery coffee I've had in between, which might at a lesser producer be a sign of unremarkability, but with Scenery is quite the opposite; I've consumed too greedily from a lineup so stacked with notable entries the mind truly boggles at detailing them all. This doesn't mean every vista is a stunner in the same way; but you will have something to say about every one of them. In lieu of a full itinerary then, here are some highlights:

Last year's Consuelo Rubio Sidra was so light it was like a ghost - bodiless, passing through the palate leaving aromas as a spirit haunts an empty room, full of anticipation for more. This year's is just a touch thicker - a hint of sticky with the delicate fruity sweetness, like an icing petal evaporating off the tongue.

Last year's Burundi washed Giku was sweet tea. Great with a biscuit, almost lemon shortbready. This year's is lemonier, perhaps even pushing towards kumquat at times, especially in the aftertaste when cooling. Leaves the mouth redolent with the sensation of biting through citrus rind.

My favourite recipe is Chad Wang's 2017 world brewer cup winning recipe. It does not work for all beans. It did work for the 2024 Quebraditas Gesha, a sumptuous concentrated crystal of red sweetness with lingering lavender and blueberry and a heady tobacco-esque allure. This recipe with this bean remains the tastiest coffee I have consumed. Chad Wang's recipe did not work for the 2025 Quebraditas Sidra release, which required a much more delicate approach to maximize the clarity on its kaleidoscope of fragrances and taste gradations: watermelon, lychee, ripe red pear, faint cranberryesque astringency if taken too far.

Scenery highlights technical advancement, ingenuity, and craft as in Luz Angela's higher intervention Chiroso this year. But Scenery does not neglect to recognize and celebrate varietal or terroir, as in 2024's El Fenix Wush Wush or their judicious selections from less-vaunted origins such as their Nicaraguan and Peruvian offerings.

And of course the decaf - a rarity to see valued, but a great value to those who either cannot consume or are sensitive to caffeine. Telila decaf is a big winner.

As one can tell, Scenery's coffee is an education and a challenge. Spending time with it encourages experimentation, attention, care, learning. It makes one a better brewer, if only to maximize what will invariably be an already pleasant drinking experience.

Scenery give a serious selling experience. As a shopper you will never be without any information you care to look for, and none of it, from tasting notes to transparency statements, is unreliable from what I have experienced. We have all been disappointed at some point by an oversold bean that comes out with a shadow of the flavour profile it boasted in review; this is not an experience one has to be wary of at Scenery.

The only and most consistent issue with Scenery is the consistency with which they bring out something unmissable, ruining an otherwise neat coffee budget.

I was very pleased to see Scenery gaining success with a new location and cafe in London. I can't but feel they richly deserve it. The Japanese like to say that Mt Fuji is not for climbing, but for viewing. Indeed, there are many more artworks in that tradition with views of Fuji rather than views from Fuji. Scenery coffee seems to me to be able to provide a similar experience. This is not, after all, a brand which insists we must all go to the same place, scale an arduous mountain, in coffee to get the same value for our beverage. Instead, it brings us views of coffee, a landscape, a vista of coffee. And because the good folks at Scenery appear to be quite the skilled artists, there is much to be enjoyed in the scenery they choose to lay out before us, in all its bold, detailed, and delicate glory.

Preferred UK Roaster

Scenery has become my preferred UK roaster. The coffees they offer are interesting, intentionally sourced, and roasted in a way that best highlights each coffee individually. They are well-versed in lighter roast profiles and their approach seeks to explore unique and interesting flavours by highlighting those that shine for each coffee.

OMG…the Wilton Benitez Gesha beans!…

OMG…the Wilton Benitez Gesha beans were awesome! Incredible flavour. One of the best cups of coffee i’ve ever made. The email alerting me to it’s limited availability was so helpful and delivery was prompt with no fuss! The thank you note inside was a nice touch.
