Beware Select Home Warranty
I am extremely disappointed with Select Home Warranty and the way my HVAC claim was handled.
My Trane air conditioner stopped working, so I filed a claim. Select Home Warranty sent a small company after about two days. It appeared to be more of a handyman-type company, and it was very difficult to find reliable information about them online. After inspecting my Trane system, they told me that they could not diagnose or repair it and that I needed a Trane specialist.
I continued with the claim and Select Home Warranty sent two additional HVAC companies. Unfortunately, both companies also said they could not properly diagnose or repair the system.
At that point, after multiple unsuccessful service visits, I contacted an authorized Trane dealer myself and had a Trane specialist properly diagnose and repair the problem. The total bill was $256.
I contacted Select Home Warranty before submitting the receipt, and I was told to send them the receipt and that they would reimburse me by check. However, they ultimately sent me only $73, claiming that because I used an outside company, their policy only allowed them to pay $73.
This makes absolutely no sense to me. If the companies Select Home Warranty sent had actually been able to diagnose and repair my HVAC system, why would I have needed to hire an outside Trane specialist in the first place? I did not choose to use an outside contractor simply because I wanted to. I did so only after multiple contractors sent by Select Home Warranty failed to resolve the problem.
The repair was performed by a legitimate Trane dealer/specialist, with a real $256 invoice—not by some unknown small company that Select Home Warranty sent out.
The amount of money involved is not the main issue. The issue is the principle and the way this claim was handled. I paid for a home warranty expecting the company to provide competent service when my covered equipment failed. Instead, after several unsuccessful service visits, I had to find a qualified specialist myself and was then reimbursed for only a small fraction of the actual repair cost.
I am sharing my experience so other homeowners understand what they may be dealing with before purchasing a policy.

Select Home Warranty: I strongly recommend reviewing this claim and explaining why, after your assigned contractors were unable to repair my Trane system, you reimbursed only $73 of a legitimate $256 repair bill.

If you like frustration this is your company. Terrible claims service. Everything denied in the fine print. Can’t get return calls from claims and partial English speaking representatives. I canceled my policy mid term. Sales folks polite and promise you the moon but don’t deliver! Steer clear!

Charles the rep was outstanding. He knows the insurance and answered all my questions and helped me select the appropriate plan
Too good to be true, the policy ended up being worthless when I submitted a claim
I originally gave this company a great review based on a very smooth sign up experience. However, when my air conditioning went out a few months later, my experience turned into a nightmare. I have been without AC for three weeks during 100 degree weather. The technician who came out one week after submitting my claim told me that the part needed was hard to find but he may have one lying around in his garage. Very sketchy. The warranty company requested maintenance records for three years after I called them three days later, which I provided that day. They then denied my claim, claiming that I did not provide maintenance records. After waiting an additional week to appeal and resubmit my maintenance records once again, and after having no AC for 3 weeks, I am now having to spend hundreds of dollars to repair a part that is expressly covered in my warranty due to their continued denial. I have cancelled my policy as a result but will only get a small fraction of my money back. PLEASE do not waste your money on this coverage; i found it to be completely worthless.
My experience with Select Home Warranty…
My experience with Select Home Warranty has been extremely disappointing.
I purchased and paid for a home warranty expecting protection when something went wrong. Since purchasing the policy, I submitted three separate claims, and none of the three resulted in coverage.
After that experience, I decided to cancel my policy. I called Select Home Warranty and specifically requested cancellation. I was told that my policy was canceled.
Weeks later, I still had not received my refund. I called again on August 21 to ask where my refund was and was told that refunds take time.
When I followed up again, I discovered something even more frustrating: apparently my original cancellation request had not actually been processed. Select Home Warranty was now treating August 21—the date I called to FOLLOW UP about my refund—as the cancellation date.
Because of that, the refund I am being offered is lower than it would have been if the company had processed my cancellation on the date I originally requested it.
Think about how frustrating that is: I called to cancel, was told it was canceled, waited for my refund, called to ask where my refund was, and then discovered that the cancellation apparently wasn’t processed until that later call.
I should not lose money because a company failed to process my cancellation when I requested it.
I am asking Select Home Warranty to review the recordings and records of my original cancellation call, honor the date on which I actually requested cancellation, recalculate my refund using that date, and issue the money owed to me promptly.
I am sharing my experience so other consumers understand what happened to me before deciding whether to purchase this service.
