Good app, but untrusted by Google.

I really enjoy using the free version for simple arithmetic solving. It has a good interface that I prefer over some open-source versions (I am using this in Google Sheets). However, I wanted to let you know that Google flagged this extension as being suspicious and was not trusted. I will keep the app, but I highly suggest you work with Google to get on their trusted vendor list.

I was a customer for 4 years

I was a customer for 4 years. Their solver worked great and they had good customer & technical support. But all of a sudden their customer support went away and the good people that supported me in the past are gone. Solver quit working on Excel and nobody to solve my problem. Unfortunately I had to quit them. In the past I would rate them A+ but not anymore. Buyer Beware!

Over 4 years and 28 support tickets on file in our Help Desk, this person became known as one of our "most difficult customers ever", among tens of thousands. In this incident, after 5 personal responses over 2 days from our support staff, plus responses from our sales manager and CEO (during which he kept saying that no one was helping him), he asked for a refund, so we immediately sent him a refund check. Vendor beware.

I was unable to use solver add in on my local Excel program. There were complications that prevented it from loading.
My main use for it was for a course in school.

New academic version of the software…

New academic version of the software has severe limitations in terms of number of allowable inputs for optimization and simulation models.
Several students, who had paid for the software, complained that the Analytic Solver Menu would spontaneously disappear from the menu bar.

Hello, PM. Thank you for this feedback. As we've explained many times to students in tech support, the only way that the Analytic Solver ribbon can disappear is if Excel terminates unexpectedly in a user session. When Excel restarts, it displays a dialog where the default selection will disable the Analytic Solver add-in. If the user doesn't pay attention and just clicks OK, Analytic Solver will disappear from the ribbon. If this happens, it's relatively easy to get it back: Either choose Options - COM Add-ins in Excel and check the box next to Analytic Solver, or just use the Start menu - Frontline Systems - ASP Application Manager to re-register Analytic Solver.

Analytic Solver Basic for student use does have problem size limitations, to distinguish it from the commercial version (students pay about 1/100th of its price). The student version works fine with the free examples we provide and with nearly all textbook problems and typical homework problems. You can compare the versions on our website www.solver.com. Professors may contact us for a solution for temporarily increases in the limits for specific homework problems.

Simply the best

Frontine's products are simply the best analytics tools available for spreadsheets. And if spreadsheets aren't your modeling platform of choice, their SDK gives you access to everything they've got to use in any way you want. They have been the leading innovator in this space for decades and their customer support is second to none.

Great for optimizations

In overall, we are satisfied with the product.
We had few frictions due to:
- license validation in big infrastructures (with proxies,...)
- Instability of the plugin that gets desactivated in Excel
- After calculations, the sheets get blinkering (switch betwen sheets, mouse cursor changing state,...) so we have to wait 1-3 seconds before the application stabilizes with some bigger excel files

Programmer replies: Instability/blinkering is hard to address without your workbook to reproduce it. You may send your workbook to Frontline for testing. I do not see this behavior in general, even with large workbooks on my system.

I use the product regularly because I find the Excel-based transparency and convenience a nice complement to working in Matlab.

I use the product regularly because I believe it is best in class. I think some of the upgrades are too expensive but I have no issue with the quality of the product. I find the frequent requests to confirm the license annoying. I travel internationally and have been locked out of the product when I was having internet connectivity issues. There has to be a moratorium on this (e.g. allow a week, a month before disabling the application). Also, Frontline has been the most difficult vendor for my IT folks to work with when it comes to using my license on multiple machines that only I operate. Again, there must be an easier way. Finally, I did try the consulting service and my experience was positive - worth the money.

Yes, there is an easier way now for one user to use his license on more than one machine. Log out of the application with the first machine and log into the application with the second machine. You may log out and log back in when traveling, too, to work with variations in internet connections.

No issues with the software.

No issues with the software.

But disappointed that we are forced to upgrade to the latest version every time we renew our annual license. Our software does not change so there is no need to upgrade the FrontLine solver, but we are forced to and it is a nuisance.

Thank you for being a loyal customer during the upgrade. If you like, write to tech support privately to suggest how to make it go more smoothly for you. Other customers may have experience a different change: The original Premium Solver had optimization only. The product was expanded to include simulation and data mining also, and thus it was renamed Analytic Solver. To be fair, all the customers who renew get the update.
