My daughter was attending Sound Steps…

My daughter was attending Sound Steps face-to-face classes and Trinity classes. Due to her exams, she was unable to continue attending the classes, and I informed them about this in advance. However, the director emailed me stating that I still had to pay because the course was not “pay as you go.” I had informed them a week before the course started, but he claimed that the notice period was not sufficient.

He then sent several emails demanding payment. A few days later, he added a £5 weekly late payment charge. Recently, I received another email stating that my case had been forwarded to debt collectors and that I now have to pay £278, including penalties, even though the original amount was £178.

The payment email was sent on 27/03/2026, and the cancellation deadline was only two days later. I was unable to check and respond to the email within those two days, and when I contacted them afterward, I was told it was too late to cancel.
They also changed the teacher and the agreed class time, which was very inconvenient for us. In addition, if you want to take Trinity classes, they require you to join their face-to-face classes as well, which felt unnecessary, especially for students already studying at Trinity level.

If you are considering Trinity classes, I would recommend looking at other providers first. The service we received was very poor, and there are many other companies offering much better classes.

Thank you for your feedback, We are sorry to hear your experience was poor.
Having reviewed the communication and situation regarding this terms classes and missing the deadline for cancelation. There are a number of discrepancies in your review. The deadline for cancelations last term was the 28th of March and your notice to stop came after this in April so unfortuantely this is not in advance. Setting up a school term and is not something that any school or club could do in one day, everything has to be booked in advance. We always set sensible dates i.e end of terms and we also include many reminders in the run up to the end of terms such as exam instructions and newsletters.
With any late cancelation we always highlight this straight away that payment is still expected as we feel most customers would rather attend lessons for that term rather than waste the payment for lessons and we do also offer alternative options should location or time be an issue.
With all outstanding payments we send weekly reminders as a school policy. This is a fair approach as its reasonable to expect payments on time but at the same time we also want to ensure customers are fairly warned of any missed payment. No charges are appilied in the first 7 days and this is highlighted in every payment reminder but we do operate a £5 weekly charge after this to help cover cost of chasing payments, however if we receive communication in advance of delay in payments we will often agree a no fee cost as long as payment is made on the agreed date.
Unfortunately if no response is received then after a 6 weeks we do move the account to debt collection which comes at an extra charge. However this is only done after final notice reminders and again if there is any ongoing communication on the payment further action is held of till this is resolved. Unfortunately as with any company if we receive no response or payment then this is the only option left.
Regarding Changing times or teacher this is not something we ever choose to do, unfortuantely teachers to move on to other roles just like they do in schools and on rare occasions changes at teaching centres can occur or movement of other students can lead to changes but we always do our best to offer as many alternatives as possible and of course if not suitable then you are not committed to the new class time unless you agree, if we make any changes these are communicated at the earliest possible time and are not forced on any customer to accept. With exception of medial emergencies we also do not allow centres or teachers to change in term time so everyone is committed for the term to benefit all involved.
Yes you are correct we do not allow students to do Trinity on its own until they past a certain level with Soundsteps course and this is because of feedback and 30 years of experienence, Trinity exams are not a teaching course, students learning to just do and pass grades do not learn to read and write Music and with often develop gaps based on what songs they choose. Furthermore many students learning this way will score lowerer scores and can often take longer to progress and even result in giving up. In the same way we don't accept students in to trinity till they have been learning at least a year.
No complaint was raised about Trinity service and i can see your child passed grades with scores of 80 and 92 which are high scores.
I am sorry you feel there are better services out there and i hope your child will continue to achieve the great achievements that were being achieved with us and i fully understand your frustration in having to pay after the deadline was passed but we must operate a deadline in order to provide the high standard service for the quality of lessons we aim to provide. We are more than happy to look at the fees added and remove these but as stated the payment for this term would need to be paid as the cancelation was after the deadline.

It's a friendly environment at my child's centre in Plumstead Common. The teacher is helpful. I love that they take exams and I love that they send emails to check my child is okay whenever he misses a class. I would recommend.

Soundsteps..a gradual & fun way to learn keyboard!!

My son has been Soundsteps Music School since Step 1 for keyboard classes and i have liked their approach of starting with the basics and gradually building on it very term. He is now passed Step 9 and we are very pleased with the effort & dedication of his teacher, Wilma who makes a concerted effort to help my son on his keyboard journey. Wilma is a thorough professional and ensures children enjoy their classes with he enthusiasm , while also learning something new everytime.

The communication from Aaron & his team regards Soundsteps is good & prompt and we have had no issues. I would recommend Soundsteps Music to anyone who wants their child to make a start with keyboard/piano before progressing to advanced Trinity classes.

Thanks,
Ajay H

Matthew is a real asset to Soundsteps

My daughter has been learning from Matthew at Soundsteps for about 4 years now and has enjoyed her lessons and finished Grade 5 certification with a distinction. She refuses to learn from anyone else as Matthew has managed to inspire her immensely

Read terms carefully

Please review the terms and conditions thoroughly, as you are required to pay for the entire 4-month term even if your child does not attend all the lessons. When my son lost interest, the teacher recommended we take a break. Despite this advice coming from the teacher, we were still expected to pay for the whole term, which I found disappointing. In my experience, the cancellation policy is inflexible—something to consider, especially for young children whose motivation can change quickly.

We are sorry to hear you feel you have not had the experience you were looking forward. Before joining Soundsteps we always offer all students a free trial to meet the teacher and ensure they enjoy our classes and get along with one of our teachers. Should there be any concerns at this point we would always advise not joining or trying a different class. As you joined i am assuming there was not an initial issue. However please do note that after trials we do ask you to sign and agree that if you are continuing you commit fully to a term as we are not a pay as you go service and in order to provide lessons weekly at centres and with the same teacher we need to book classes in advance on a termly basis. I have checked our emails and can see from your enrolment you signed to agree to this along with agreeing to cancelation on termly a basis which is different to what you say in yoru review.
With regards to payment we do offer a monhtly option to pay rather than making payment in one go however this is not at the expense of the termly commitment. I can see by emails when you did contact us about stopping we did offer alternative option to attend lessons or were happy to address any concerns but for the remainder of term and you were informed again you would still have to pay for the remainder instalments. Unfortunately as with any company if you refuse to pay on time then further costs our incurred and passed on as companies are also expected to pay their suppliers on time. I can see in every email you were warned of charges and were invite to discuss any payment issues with us to avoid charges which unfortunately responses were not provided. If you wish to discuss payment please contact the office so they can assist in trying to help so that only the agreed payment for the lessons which you signed is charged.
