I'm trying to build a nursery for my first child. Money is tight, but Jordan Stein, their rep, gave us the hard sell on their services, which cost $1,000 more than their competitors. Ultimately, the images of their walls on Instagram persuaded us; our baby's first room, where she'll be spending so much of her early life, should be the very best it can be.
Once the estimate and timineline were hashed out via e-mail, we were asked in the same thread to wire a deposit of $1,400 for materials. After we sent it, Jordan claimed his business e-mail had been hacked by fraudsters some weeks ago, and it appears they inserted the payment request into our otherwise legitimate conversation. He acted very upset to discover his efforts to address the breach had been unsuccessful.
I believe his story. Nevertheless, I'm deeply disappointed that no effort was made to warn us that recent payments to their company had been hijacked. He could have cautioned us that we needed to be wary of being asked for money via e-mail, even if he thought the situation was under control.
Frankly, I think the company is at least partly culpable for what happened to us (unless the entire operation was a scam from the start... unlikely, but not impossible), and I would have appreciated it if they'd offered to do the work for the agreed-upon amount minus the $1,400 we were defrauded of.
