Very disappointing visit, we will never return

We were very disappointed with our experience at the Garlic Farm Restaurant on Sunday, 14th June. Having looked forward to our visit for weeks, it is unfortunate to say that we will not be returning.

We began with the ‘Slow Roasted Garlic Bulb’ starter. Unfortunately, the garlic bulb was barely roasted and still raw inside. Although it was replaced, the second attempt was also undercooked. The chef explained that 'it is the type of garlic,' but as a garlic farm, we would expect you to know that any garlic can be properly roasted until it is soft, gooey, and buttery—perfect for spreading on bread. This explanation did not seem adequate.

We also tried the ‘Roast Sirloin Carpaccio’ from the specials board. However, the dish was neither raw nor thinly sliced, but rather just in Sunday roast type slices of beef with many tendons still attached. The meat was tough and lacked flavour. Additionally, there was no salt or pepper provided on the tables. Definition of Carpaccio is a dish of meat or fish (such as beef, veal, venison, salmon or tuna), thinly sliced or pounded thin, and served raw, typically as an appetiser.

For my main course, I ordered the ‘Roast Chicken Caesar’ salad, expecting a classic preparation and safe option after the disastrous start to our visit. Instead, the salad arrived with a whole leg and part of a thigh simply placed on top, and whole anchovies were served on the salad instead of being incorporated into the dressing. The crispy pancetta was so hard that it was nearly inedible.

Given these experiences, we chose not to order anything else and left feeling very disappointed. It seemed as though the kitchen staff lacked adequate training, which was surprising given the restaurant’s lovely setting. We hope that you will consider investing in further training for your chefs, as the overall experience did not meet the standards expected from such an establishment.

Isle of Wight Premium Garlic

Have used the Garlic Farm on the isle of wight for a couple of years now with no complaints. This year ordered my Garlic on the Thursday and it arrived on the Monday.I bought the New Season Rhapsody Wight Bulbs, they may seem expensive for a Bulb of Garlic but the size of them and the quality of them are first class, nothing like the shrivelled up old Garlic you buy in the supermarket,if you like Garlic you must try this, super fresh.

Waste of a visit

I visit at least twice a year, and have never moaned before. Yesterday, for my 65th, we came to the Island, for the day. The barn was buzzing, lights on and boards out .. the Xmas craft Fayre. I popped my head in through the open door .. only to be growled at by an older lady .. ".. get out, we are setting up and not open!." how rude. I didn't know... last year I spent nearly £200 on gifts. No welcome in the restaurant .. workmen directly behind our table, and staff cleaning the floor with a.mop. Won't be back. Last visit .. you can buy the same products on the mainland, for the same price. I spent £100+ on products for myself and daughter yesterday. Even the Mermaid Gin is cheaper online. Time to give up in the Island.

Disappointed with a poor response to a product I believe is not fit for sale.

Having purchased garlic from the Garlic Farm, either directly or indirectly, for many years, for the first time I received a product I did not feel was up to the usual standard. To be honest, I would argue it was not fit for sale.

I ordered 12 bulbs of 4 varieties (all but one are excellent); for the Carcassonne Wight I received 4 bulbs: Bulb 1 = 74g, Bulb 2 = 88g, Bulb 3 = 44g, Bulb 4 22g. I have always been enthusiastic about the Garlic Farm, attended 3 festivals and my husband also stayed in their cottage with friends last year. However, I did not feel this was an acceptable bulb and contacted customer service, primarily because I had always been hugely satisfied with their service and product.

I received a response from someone who is either very well informed or talking absolute nonsense. On receiving a further supply of Carcassonne Wight from Crocus and my neighbour receiving 6 bulbs via Amazon, I will address their response.

• Point one: ‘The size of these bulbs is due to the weather conditions in the Lautrec region through the last growing season where these bulbs were grown with our partner farms in the South of France’. My parents stayed on a friend’s farm near Lautrec this year, attending the annual Lautrec Garlic Festival at the beginning of August. They reported that It was an excellent harvest, confirmed with a brief internet search; 'the primary issue this year for Ail Rose de Lautrec was a lack of small bulbs that retail purchasers prefer'. AI: 2025 harvest: 'Lautrec Wight', has been described as phenomenal by some growers, with large bulbs and good yields. Secondly, of the 10 Carcassonne Wight bulbs myself and my neighbour purchased from third parties, the smallest bulb weighed in at: 71g.

• Point two:’ however these smaller cloves still have the potential to grow in to good sized healthy bulbs.’ Really! I need say no more.

I did not contact customer service because I wanted a bulb refunded, I made contact as I did not feel the bulb was up to standard. Going forwards, it seems the best bulbs are purchase via third parties.

Very happy Customer

Wow, what can I say. Excellent products tasty, full of flavour, versatile.
I have placed a few orders now, and have yet to be disappointed. My recent order was for Black Garlic Balsamic Vinegar, 2pk Black Garlic Bulbs, Black Garlic Butter, a tub of peeled Black Garlic for easy eating. I used the whole Garlic, in a Ceasar dressing and, sliced the peeled easy Garlic and throughly enjoyed the heightened flavour.
The Black Garlic Balsamic Vinegar I used to make a Tomato Salad Dressing, which I will definitely make again.
The Black Garlic Butter, I sent to friends, who reported they hadn't tried before.
I am now looking forward to placing my next order for myself and for Xmas Presents for friends

Nice surroundings, staff lovely, not over keen on cream tea, scone was heavy and cake like, not tasted scones like this before, was served piping hot, not asked if we wanted them hot so i assume they came from freezer, not informed having coffee would cost more, other places provide coffee if your not a tea drinker, wouldnt have cream tea again

Fantastic.

Visited the IOW for the weekend and wanted to visit the garlic farm. The staff were wonderful, the meal was amazing and the walk was beautiful, with so much to take in. It really was a wonderful place to visit and will definitely be back in September.

Poor customer skills

We were late turning up at 16:55 so they had a choice, either serve us, or ask us to come back as they were closing. They chose to serve us in a most ungracious and rude manner. How the rude girl on the counter was allowed to speak like that whilst a older woman watched on without saying anything was unbelievable. Never again.

Must visit if you are plant lover

Must visit if you are plant lover, the walk via the wild flowers and garlic farm is amazing. And this farm walk is free of cost. The farm shop has an amazing collection of pickles, sauces and chutney. We could get any seeds as it was not season time.

Poor Service

Recently purchased four garlic bulbs three of which were fine the forth being a third of the size of the others.
As the bulbs are quite expensive in comparison with other suppliers I emailed the company attaching and image clearly demonstrating the mis sized bulb which could only be described as second grade, which has been totally ignored.
Quick enough to take your money and extol the virtues of the Garlic Farm but when it comes to customer service...............??

I note you have since asked that I email you with my complaint. The reason I placed a review on the Trustpilot forum is because you totally ignored the email and photograph I sent on the 7th of October at 19.32.
It is a sad reflection that the only way to stir a response from you is by placing a review on a public platform.

The email you claim you were unable to find was, as your request, resent Friday the 18th of Oct at 10.33. To date I have not received any response.

The matter has now been resolved by the Garlic Farm team to my satisfaction. Thank you to both Trustpilot and the Garlic Farm Team

Just seen they are a dirty ingredient…

Just seen they add a dirty ingredient to their product ‘nature identical’. I should carefully check labels before eating as some companies like this one are very sneaky. Shouldn’t really be surprised here though considering the Garlic Farm’s ethical record despite their marketing and apparent green credentials.

Stopped for a meal for two

Stopped for a meal for two - which was nice. The Chilli was very nice, I just hate the long plates and managed to get it down my sleeve. My husband had Fish Cake, but it needed something else with it like a side of fries - a very small portion for a main.

I ordered my favourite drink… ‘Bloody Mary’ made with the islands garlic vodka at £9, it was terrible. I have drank many Bloody Mary’s and know how they should taste. I really thought for this price the drink would be special. It was like drinking a tin of tomatoes. I even went up to the bar and asked for more Worcestershire Sauce and Chilli Sauce, but it was still awful. So sorry ’Garlic Farm’, if you’re going to charge a good price for something, you need to make sure it is special. Girls, have a play and make it something special… maybe celery and garlic halves skewered? The Worcestershire tasted watered down - make sure it’s the original. Maybe a celery salt rim! For £9 it’s got to be tasty & it should taste of celery, Worcestershire, vodka, a nice bit of salt, garlic with a bit of heat at the back of your throat - it’s like a meal in a glass!

They did knock £3 off when we went to pay, but still not worth £6. Management… this is one for you to sort!

Hello Susie,
Thank you very much for your feedback about your time at our restaurant. Very pleased you enjoyed the Chilli.
We appreciate your feedback about the bloody mary and apologies this was not up to the usual standard, we have fed all this back to the team and they are on the case to make sure it really is the best!
Very best wishes,
