Eleven months for a two-week job, bike returned incomplete, refund unpaid...

I booked The Hackney Peddler on 30 June 2025 for a powder-coat respray and new decals on my 1980s Peugeot road bike. The job was understood to take around two weeks. My bike was returned eleven months later, in mid-May 2026, missing its headset — which I have since sourced and fitted at my own cost.

Over those eleven months:
Emails frequently went unanswered for weeks at a time, and on two occasions for several months.
The original cranks were lost in the workshop during the job and had to be replaced.
I resorted to chasing via email, repeated phone calls, and even social media simply to get a basic update.
In the final week before the bike was returned, ten of my phone calls went unanswered. On the two occasions an assistant did answer, he was unable to physically locate my bike at the workshop.
A £100 refund was offered, unprompted, as compensation for the delay on 7 April 2026. Three weeks after the bike's return, that refund has still not been paid.

To be fair, the owner cited a shop relocation and working short-staffed, and these were acknowledged in writing. But none of that adequately explains keeping a customer's bicycle for nearly a year, losing components in the workshop, returning the bike incomplete, or failing to honour a compensation offer he had volunteered himself.
I had hoped to resolve this directly. After ample opportunity to do so, I am leaving this review so others can make a more informed decision than I was able to.

Hi Tom,

You're entitled to your opinion and I accept that the project took far longer than either of us expected. However, your review focuses almost entirely on the time taken and overlooks much of the additional work that became necessary to return the bicycle in a safe and rideable condition while preserving as much of its originality as possible.

What started as a powder coat and decal job became a much bigger restoration. Midway through the project we discovered the fork was severely bent from a prior accident and that the dropouts were beginning to separate from the fork blades. We could have ignored that and simply completed the cosmetic work, but that would have meant returning a bicycle with a fork we no longer considered safe to ride.

Several replacement options were explored before the decision was made to rebuild and preserve the original fork using as many of the original components as possible, as we knew the bicycle held sentimental value to you.

The substantial fork rebuild, upgraded replacement components and delivery back to you were all provided at our expense.

As has always been my approach, updates were generally provided when there was meaningful progress to report, rather than repeated messages simply confirming that a bicycle was still awaiting parts, repairs or paint.

I understand your frustration with the timescale. What I do not accept is the suggestion that this remained a straightforward powder coat and decal job throughout. The reality became considerably more involved once the condition of the fork was uncovered and the project evolved well beyond its original scope.

friendly, knowledgeable & local.

Have always had a great experience dealing with Alex, always has time to chat and talk through the process, I've bought various bikes to him over and his team over the years, and never felt the need to look anywhere else.

Disaster of a dealing with this company :(

Afraid to say I had an absolute disaster with The Hackney Peddler. I don't really believe in reviews but I am still waiting for a response from them and feel I have no alternative but to post this.

What was supposed to be a straightforward bike build with a usual estimated time period of 6 weeks turned into months of delays without communication. Despite repeatedly emailing and calling to ask for updates, I was met with silence for long stretches, and then vague answers
I support small businesses, especially cycling ones, and feel I was patient. But it became beyond a usual 'snowed under' situation for the business. I wouldn't hear anything for weeks and was out of pocket a considerable amount of money, and without a bike.
There was never an apology or acknowledgement, it was actually suggested that I was the issue and was made to feel that I was a villain for chasing them. I wasn't even chasing them for the bike, just for a response. Eventually, I felt I had no choice but to cancel. The refund was given after another long protracted time following more weeks of chasing.

Adding insult to injury, I am still waiting for my own saddle to be returned, which was taken for the build and has yet to be sent back despite further emails and calls. I hope they will be in contact with me soon.

Miss Malin, I’m sorry to read this, though I do need to correct a few points. We apologised several times and offered a substantial discount to reflect the delay, which was caused by relocating the workshop and catching up largely on my own.

At no point did I suggest, allude to, or imply that you were the problem. You later chose to cancel, which I respected, and a full refund was issued — even though we had already incurred costs for the custom paint and the frame we painted specifically for you. Your saddle is also being returned at our cost.

I’m also not sure “straightforward build” is the right description. This was always meant to be a bespoke project, with custom paint and carefully selected classic parts.

This is a hands-on workshop, not an office glued to a computer, so communication isn’t always instant, but it isn’t right to say there was no apology or acknowledgement.

Disappointing Experience at Hackney…

Disappointing Experience at Hackney Peddler

I had an very frustrating experience with Hackney Peddler. I approached them for help removing a stuck seatpost from my bike. After making an appointment, I left my bike at the shop and was assured by one of their mechanics that they’d try to address the issue the same day.

However, days passed without any communication from them. I emailed for an update—no reply. I called several times, but no one answered. After numerous attempts, I finally got through, only to be told that they didn’t have the necessary tool for the job and were waiting for it to arrive.

A week later, I still hadn’t heard anything. Again, my emails went unanswered, and it took countless calls to get an update. When I eventually got through, I was told the tool still hadn’t arrived, and they couldn’t provide a timeline for when it would.

This lack of communication and disregard for their customers is unacceptable. I wasted nearly two weeks without my bike, with no clear answers or updates. The poor customer service and apparent disorganization make it hard to believe this business operates in a city like London.

I would not recommend Hackney Peddler to anyone seeking reliable service.

- i also want to add and stress as i just saw reply to my feedback from the shop, my satisfaction is in how this was handled, its fair enough to wait for a tool but i was not informed about it prioir that there will be a delay nor at any point i got a phone call informing me about the delay. I was left without the bike for two weeks and no one from the shop bothered to let me know about the process. In the end i took my bike out of the shop with no repair being done, waste of my time and terrible customer service

Hi Marcin,

Thanks for updating your review. We do understand your frustration, especially around the lack of updates. That part’s fair, and we take it on board.

What we want to clarify—again—is that the issue wasn’t about disorganisation or neglect. The tool we use for this kind of seatpost removal has been in service for years, but a key part failed recently. We’ve been waiting on a skilled metalworker to remake the components—something we explained when you dropped the bike off, and again when we spoke on the phone.

We didn’t do a good enough job communicating that delay up front or keeping you in the loop during that wait. That’s on us, and we’re working on improving how we handle slower-moving jobs like this.

That said, we won’t ever rush or force a job like this without the proper equipment—it’s not worth the risk to the frame or our reputation. When you came to collect the bike, we understood your decision and suggested another shop you might try.

We’re a small, specialist workshop focused on getting things done right, even if that means slower timelines sometimes. But your experience shows us we need to communicate that better.
