A warning for future purchasers

I recently purchased a bespoke dog crate unit from The Pet Carpenter, costing just over £3,200 - a triple crate for 3 Labradors. While the finished product itself is well made, my overall experience was disappointing due to issues with delivery, fitting, and the level of aftercare.

The unit was delivered by a single person despite being very large and heavy, which resulted in damage to my flooring during installation. Unfortunately, this meant I had to replace the flooring in the affected areas at a cost of £1,310 (admittedly this did also include a small utility and downstairs loo that was in damaged but needed to match the new flooring - separated quotes had this part at £195).

In addition, the unit did not fit the space as intended and required significant joinery work to make it usable. This included removing and refitting beading, cutting down part of the frame, removing timber battens, taking off skirting boards, and then refitting them. This work cost a further £275.

Whilst I did provide measurements, I am not a tradesperson, and for a bespoke piece of furniture at this price point, I would have expected a greater level of due diligence and professional judgement to ensure the unit could be installed correctly without requiring this level of remedial work - I also note this as an issue on a previous review from 2023 so the company have not taken that on board.

This took almost a month to arrange with Harry for a contractor to come out and review the damage, i ended up getting my own joiner to speed up the process. To their credit, the company did contribute £850 (after multiple emails back n forward - initial offer was £650) towards the costs, which I reluctantly accepted in order to resolve matters quickly. However, this still left me significantly out of pocket for issues that arose as a direct result of the delivery and installation process being poor.

Overall, the product itself is good, but the experience highlighted shortcomings in delivery arrangements, installation planning, and quality control. For a premium bespoke service, I would have expected a smoother process from start to finish.

Hi Emma,

Thank you for your review and for your kind comments about the quality of the furniture itself. I’m really pleased to hear you’re happy with the finished piece.

I’m sorry that aspects of the delivery and installation experience did not meet your expectations. We always aim to provide a smooth and considered process from start to finish, so I do appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback in detail.

Throughout the design and build process, we worked closely with the measurements provided and made adjustments along the way to help ensure the furniture would fit within the space. As with bespoke freestanding furniture, final installation can sometimes require minor site adjustments depending on the specific room conditions.

As discussed, we worked to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and contributed towards both the flooring and joinery works to help bring everything to a close. We’re glad that everything is now in place and usable as intended.

Your comments around delivery handling and installation considerations have been taken on board, and we will continue to review and refine our processes to ensure the experience matches the quality of the product we deliver.

Thank you again for your feedback, and I do hope you and your dogs enjoy the furniture for many years to come.

You dream it, Harry makes your dream reality.

I had been considering a piece of Pet Carpenter for some time and got around to contacting Harry with my thoughts. After a slight adjustment to measurements it was on order. Eventually I advised him of our choice of colour but was worried I'd chosen too bold.
The day of delivery with the delightful Az and all my fears were gone. It is absolutely beautiful. The 'pop of colour' couldn't have gone better and with the brass finish.... just perfect. The quality is first class and I would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone. Many, many thanks from Nellie too, who has really taken to her new hidy hole. 🧡🤎

Absolutely beautiful piece of craftsmanship

Absolutely beautiful piece of furniture.
Made to measure exactly as we asked, very heavy and solid.
Had metal bars for what may the next generation but neatly tucks up for our dog who doesn’t need them.
Delivered by Az with a ton of covering to protect it.
Absolutely delighted.
Thank you

Lovely to deal with on every level

Lovely to deal with on every level. Followed the brief, excellent advice provided too. We now have the perfect crate and beautiful piece of furniture for our eight week old cocker spaniel to grow into. He was happy to sleep in it from night one and loves his 'space' during the day. So pleased and big thanks to the team. Can't recommend them highly enough.

Beautiful Furniture

Poppys new furniture arrived today. She is a rescue who is terrified of crates, has containment anxiety, and is often worried about new things. We figured that it was worth trying to see if a non crate hidey hole would be liked. Harry was really helpful through the design stage, and made the whole process simple. The furniture is just gorgeous, we are thrilled with it! And Poppy had ventured in of her own accord within the hour 💚 I suspect it will take some time for her to use it to relax in but that’s all good. The fittings are really high quality, the drawers are really smooth, and the wood top is lovely. It’s everything we hoped for. My only frustration has been poor (no!) response to my email with questions about delivery. Ten days after my email to Harry, (today) it was delivered by a fabulous bloke called Az, but it was sheer luck that we were ready for it as we didn’t know when it would be coming! That did create unnecessary stress, but it’s here, it’s in, and it’s lovely :)

Top Quality Furniture

An absolutely brilliant experience from start to finish. Harry and his team ensured that the piece I was designing fitted in beautifully with our decor and provided a perfect cosy safe space for our nervous rescue dog. I know it is possible to buy cheaper crates but only if you compromise on quality and build. You certainly get what you pay for with The Pet Carpenter. I definitely would not consider going anywhere else and am now also looking to design a piece of furniture for my cats.

So much better than cheap imitations

My friend bought a cheap imitation of The Pet Carpenter's furniture, which is how I found them, by searching for pet furniture. The real thing is so much better. The quality is superb and the paint is a perfect match with the surrounding decor. They also modify to meet special requirements to suit each pet's needs. The people who work there are super friendly too. I cannot recommend them enough.

We are thrilled to have recently…

We are thrilled to have recently received our furniture from the Pet Carpenter and have really enjoyed designing somethings thats our own and that our two dogs love. It’s a complete game changer from the eyesores of the metals crates we had in our lounge previously and we’ve already received many compliments from visiting family and friends. Thank you Harry and team, and also to your delivery man for such a wonderful service.

Very poor customer service, wouldn’t use this company again

I am an experienced dog owner who has always crate-trained my dogs. I liked the idea of having a stylish piece of furniture that would incorporate my dogs’ beds. After ordering the product, which cost in excess of £1,500, I waited weeks and weeks for it to arrive. It came without the promised cushions and I waited several more weeks for these to arrive. Throughout the process communication with Harry was almost impossible and many of my emails were ignored. I told him from the start that the furniture was for a new puppy and not once did he talk about special features for puppies or provide any advice on how to prevent puppies chewing the wood. Within hours my puppy had chewed the furniture. A forum of very experienced dog owners recommended applying chilli to the wood to deter chewing. I only had Tabasco so applied this instead. This worked to a degree but unfortunately my puppy simply chose another area of the furniture to chew. During the day I leave the doors open and both my dogs take themselves into their beds and enjoy being in there. Harry has tried to suggest in a reply to a Google review that by applying Tabasco I could have caused distress to my dog. Absolutely on the contrary. I take great offence at his assertions and have attached an email response he sent to me regarding the Tabasco to the Google review, in which he suggests it’s a good solution. He has resorted to these tactics after repeatedly asking me to remove my negative reviews, which I agreed to do once my issues were resolved. They have not been resolved!!! Both my dogs are extremely well-trained and extremely happy. Unfortunately I’m not happy. I have given up trying to resolve the issues as communication with this company is so frustrating. Harry has sent a huge pile of metal strips, none of which fit my crate, and I have no idea how to affix them. He has suggested sending me a metal cutter but this has never materialised and I don’t want to start doing this anyway. The company should be sending someone to resolve my issue. I will be seeking a full refund, by legal means if necessary, and I will most definitely not be using this company again or recommending them to my huge doggy network!! It has been an extremely distressing experience, made worse by Harry’s comments in his response to my Google review.

The furniture is beautiful but it’s painful to resolve mistakes!

The furniture is beautiful, no doubt about that but sadly it didn’t match the measurements that I initially agreed. And to resolve it would be at my cost, not particularly helpful. If you order from this company and you are ordering a bespoke design, make sure you’re clear what you’re getting. As any mistakes are going to be expensive and you will be landed with resolving it. And expect communication delays, they aren’t the quickest to reply!
