Disappointing quality – website photos do not match reality (and customer service agrees)

I ordered wood samples based on the beautiful, warm, character-rich shelves shown on the website. Unfortunately, the samples received look nothing like the marketing photos. Even the "Natural" oiled sample is incredibly pale and flat-looking more like a cheap piece of fresh pine.

When I contacted customer service, their response was incredibly disappointing. They admitted to "massive variations" and explicitly told me they "wouldn't recommend ordering any further samples" because they cannot guarantee the colour.

In a follow-up, they explained that because they use Danish oils, the final shade is entirely dependent on the random board you happen to get, sending me photos of two completely different-coloured boards that supposedly had the exact same finish.

If a company knows their items arrive in completely different shades and tones, they should be using proper wood stains to match what is advertised on their website, rather than leaving it to luck.
To check if I was being unreasonable, I ordered samples from Still & Bloom, who also sell reclaimed board shelving. Their samples matched their website photography perfectly, proving that you can provide accurate representations of reclaimed timber if you care about quality control.

If a company openly admits they cannot control the appearance of their stock to match their own advertising, and tells customers to finish the product themselves, I cannot recommend buying from them. Total gamble. Avoid.

Well-Packaged Disappointment

The shelf arrived quickly and was well-packaged, so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, the product looked very different from the photos online—so much so that the owner himself described the difference as “baffling.” It was almost comical.

Despite that admission, when I tried to resolve the issue, I was met with rigid policies, a restocking fee, and no real effort to help or suggest alternatives. The only option offered was for me to pay return postage and accept a partial refund. So I'd still pay half what I paid but have no product...hmm. I considered raising it with Trading Standards—and still might—but honestly, for a small order, it feels like they’re counting on customers not bothering.

It’s clear many people have had good experiences, but if something goes wrong, the tone shifts. Responses become defensive, lengthy, and dismissive, with little accountability or flexibility.

Sadly, I won’t be returning to or recommending The Scaff Shop. A more helpful and customer-focused approach would have made all the difference.

Excellent Service & Quality Materials!

The Scaff Shop was fantastic in helping design and supply the rails for our walk-in wardrobe, and the final result looks amazing! They ensured all measurements were spot on before providing a very reasonable price for all the materials needed to complete the work.

The team was friendly, professional, and incredibly helpful from start to finish—making the whole process seamless. The wardrobe rails are now installed, and we couldn’t be happier with how they look.

Highly recommend The Staff Shop and will definitely be using them again for future projects! Thanks again for all your help!

Great product, great service

We were bracing a patio umbrella and we got a Scaff pole and some clamps. I had ordered the wrong diameter of pole but the staff noticed and checked in with me. Great service.
