Through my experience of studying psychology, I developed a method of coaching students that allows me to adapt to their individual learning styles, and so to increase their confidence in their abilities. Initially, I taught only Mathematics and Psychology but by the end of the 1990s I had added Philosophy, Religious Studies, GCSE Physics and History, and Music to my list of teaching subjects. As a result of my interest in such a wide range of subjects, and my work as an examiner for Edexcel and AQA, I have built up a wide experience preparing students for all the relevant exams.
11+ Entrance Exams
At this stage, tutoring can be about simply giving a child a competitive advantage significant enough to get them over the initial hurdle of a grammar school or independent school entrance exam.
Using a series of the latest ISEB papers and focusing on the three key areas of Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning, I have tutored and otherwise prepared pupils for entrance to such schools as Marlborough, Harrow, Westminster and St. Paul's Girls' School.
GCSE Tuition
I started my career as a private tutor over 25 years ago, working either in a one-to-one setting or in small groups. Since then I have made significant additions to the list of GCSE subjects I am now qualified to teach. All of the following are currently available:
Maths
Additional Maths
History
Physics
Philosophy
Religious Studies
Psychology
Music Technology
I also offer the RockSchool guitar grades which, if taken up to Grade 5, are equivalent to a GCSE in Music.
A Level Maths Tuition
I offer comprehensive A Level tuition, specialising in A Level maths and further maths tuition, tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. Drawing from my experience as an examiner for Edexcel, I possess a deep understanding of the essential components of these courses, including Pure Maths (Core), Mechanics, and Statistics.
With this knowledge, I am well-equipped to guide students through the intricacies of these subjects, ensuring their success in A Level mathematics. Furthermore, I take pride in offering specialised instruction in Further Pure Maths options, specifically Stats and Mechanics, available upon request.
AQA Philosophy A level
Since 2004, I have been offering comprehensive AQA Philosophy A Level tuition, boasting a wealth of experience in delivering the entire A level syllabus. My expertise spans a range of captivating philosophical topics, including the Philosophy of Mind, Political Philosophy, and a profound exploration of the works of influential thinkers such as Plato, Descartes, J.S. Mill, and Karl Popper.
With a deep-rooted passion for philosophy, I strive to instil in my students a love for critical thinking, intellectual exploration, and the profound ideas that have shaped human thought throughout history.
Adult education
I have always enjoyed the challenge of tutoring adults who have chosen to re-enter education after a long break. Drawing on the wide variety of subjects I teach allows me to customise the tuition to their specific needs.
Music Technology
I have a fully-equipped music studio here in Clapham, Bedford, and I also offer the possibility of preparing students for the Rockschool Guitar Grades.

Richard tutored me for both iGCSE Maths and A level Maths where thanks to his help I received an A* and an A respectively. I certainly couldn’t have managed it without him. He was very helpful with everything and explained everything in a way that made it easy to understand. Couldn’t recommend more.
I’ve been coming to Richard for help for about 3-4 months now. Since then, He has been a great help to my understanding of mathematics. And my preparation for my mocks and my GCSE’s. It’s great as I’ve improved a whole entire grade in the span of these 3-4 months with him which is a great improvement for me in my school and the teacher is suprised and impressed with my knowledge and my dedication to be the best in my class.
Highly recommended for anyone who is struggling or worried about mocks or GCSE!!!
The thing that has made my experience is the way he simplifies his teaching to your level of understanding and gives you a chance to explain your way of understanding .
Richard’s lesson is very fun. If he mentioned a topic like fractions, he would let you have a turn at calculating to try help you where you are going wrong and how to fix it. Richard asks you what you learn at school so he can work on it he will also ask if you’re finding it tricky so at some point, he will add it in your learning. He allows you to add ideas of what topics we can do for maths like times table, fractions, decimals and a bunch more. With guitar he likes you to pick a rhythm once you’ve learnt the basic chords. If you’re finding the basic chords hard, he will always support you and he will go over it many times. In maths and guitar, he will always be there to help you develop and learn new important skills.
My daughter has settled well at Study House and is very happy with her lessons, she is finding them beneficial and she always mentions that Richard is a very good tutor.
Richard tutored my daughter in maths for her 11+ exams, he was very patient and kind with her as she was very anxious about maths. We later discovered she has ADHD but Richard’s style of tutoring at the time had been in a style she could understand whereas school wasn’t. Would recommend

Many thanks for your review Julie. Best wishes to C as well.
Richard was great with my daughter, she was predicted a Grade 4 at GCSE , we decided to look at a tutor and found Richard. He was very , very patient with her and gave her confidence back with maths . He provided homework and went through this at the sessions, and any issues worked through until she felt confident. She ended up with a grade 6 only a few marks off a 7 !!!! thank you Richard , we really appreciate your help.
