Professional Media Comp Degree

I did the Professional Media Composition MA course (graduating in 2016) and found it to be incredibly helpful and enlightening, mostly due to the research elements (I nerded out over the essay module).

Being forced to reassess my approach to writing media music through professional feedback from tutors who ACTUALLY DO the job for a living was well worth it. While I got a merit overall, it stopped being about the grade about halfway through, as I felt myself getting better and THAT became my drive, rather than the paper at the end. I've also had various composing jobs since graduating, which I don't think I'd have had the chops for had I not learned what I did on the course.

I did initially find the course text to be on the light side, but the tutorial videos, webinars, 1-2-1s, and peer reviews were far more valuable, especially on a practical course like this. I think I'd put too much stock in textbooks from my university undergraduate learning, but at Master's level, it's all about finding your own path (or compositional voice in this case) and being supported doing so, which I felt TSE did really well.

Everyone here is friendly and supportive, the staff does their best to help with anything you bring to them (and respond to feedback, even criticism, with open ears) and the other students are great to chat with. I never got on with Discord in the past, but the TSE community is worth getting over my lack of social tech skills!

Overall, if you want a Master's degree you can do at your own pace, with tutors that give you honest and constructive feedback, surrounded by a community that loves what they do, ThinkSpace is for you.

Not worth it

For me this was a huge disappointment. I did the Cinematic Orchestration course back in the day (when tutors still gave feedback) and i went through the materials just before starting the masters program only to realize the materials are the same! There are some additional modules but they’re mainly just the other thinkspace short courses. Not all of them to be fair. I sent feedback twice during my studies if we could have more in-depth materials but they only answered me once and they gave the impression that the course was fine as it was. I did the MA in 2 years and we only had 1 chance to record with a live instrument which was a bummer because, after realizing all the material were the same, that would be the way i would get something out of the program.
The session with the orchestra was fun but be sure to make simple music if you want to have something useful out of the session. In hindsight, I wouldn’t go through the program again but instead study privately with Norman Ludwin for two years for example and then book a session with an orchestra.

In January 2023, all course materials were replaced including extensive new video tutorials, course text, additional assignments and new scores to study. All of this is exclusively available to master's students. We always respond quickly to student feedback and looking at your student account, all your support tickets were answered. In response to student feedback, in 2022 we commissioned a new module on Advanced Composition which has been in the course since January 2023. Over the coming year, we have five solo sessions scheduled for students where their music will be performed by a professional session musician, in addition to the full orchestral session in the spring. All students get half an hour with a professional 50-piece orchestra.

I loved Guy's Music Theory course!

I signed up and then completed Guy Michelmore's Music Theory course a couple months ago, after watching one of his YouTube videos. Five stars for content, for how well he explains everything, the pacing of the course, the whole experience. Guy himself is a delight. His enthusiasm is infectious and helps make the whole course fun. I have recommended it to friends! "Music Theory" sounds dense and scary. Guy shows you how simple and fun it really is. I now have a solid foundation. Thanks Guy.

Great course, on theory, and not even dull!

Guy Michelmore is an engaging, funny likeable and knowledgeable musician/tutor. Great course which is not a chore to engage with. So, if you want to get to grips with music theory (taught by a successful working musician) this is for you.

Would gladly recommend the course

Would gladly recommend the course. I used it in conjunction with other sources of learning and found it fun and worthwhile. My studies have led me to conclude that it there is no set path of learning music theory: things fall into place in a different order and different speeds for everybody. Luckily, there's no time pressure here and there's support avaliable.

Best Content, Highly Engaging, Completely Practical

I've completed a number of the ThinkSpace Education (TSE) short courses and am looking to start down the path of their MA in Professional Media Composition. Why? Q.uite frankly, I believe they provide the best, most highly engaging, completely practical, and relevant content anywhere.

It totally lines up with how I think and like to work. I describe this as the difference between "science" and "applied science." I've always had a hard time learning the theory of something as its own thing. I find that I understand and am better able to apply theory when there's an appropriate functional context for it.

This is the place where I think that TSE really excels! The instructional approach works through real-world examples that working professionals encounter, not just presenting some worked example. You get to see the whole thing! To me, it's just as important to see someone trying something, hearing that "well, that doesn't work" and then working it through to where it actually does!

This is where the magic lives and why I am such a fan of TSE. I've taken more ground in the past months since working with them than I have in many years. I'm very grateful to Guy and the entire team for their work and continued efforts to produce such fabulous programs.

Thank you!

Mr Michelmore is a great teacher

Mr Michelmore is a great teacher. From a few of his videos i have seen, i learn much on the form of a composition, and how make it not to be boring. Because of his advises i managed to compose a work for full orchestra on the theme of "Happy Birthday to You" with the title "Happy Birthday to You Theme and Fugue" in one movement.
I would be very happy if mr Michelmore, some day, would have the kindness (and time), to hear it. I have edit it with my software and sound libraries, so that it can be heard in a very good quality and fidelity.

Short Courses Review

I've taken many of the short courses and hope to some day take the post graduate course. I love the way the courses are explained. They are clear and easy to grasp. Guy brings his sense of humour as well as his knowledge to each course load which makes for a wonderful experience in all. There is just something in the way he explains each item that clicks with me and I believe would click with anyone else. I would recommend his site and lessons to anyone looking to learn or improve their skills. With the How to write music course as well as the music theory course, I was able to broaden my knowledge. With only a year and a half of piano lessons, I was able to start improvising and creating simple songs. It has given me great courage and inspiration to continue my learning of the piano and even explore orchestration. Thank you!

Valuable information and Personable Tutors

The tutors were well informed and very personable with their participants. There were snippets of valuable information letting us know how good the full courses will be. It was also great that time was made to allow us to submit examples of our work and get feedback.

I've always wanted to learn musc theory

I've always wanted to learn music theory. Being a drummer I needed to branch out and find someone that could teach me.
In my travels on Youtube I came across Guy Michelmore, of Thinkspace Education. He is witty, funny but more importantly he TEACHES me what I want to learn.
His basic course on theory is well thought out and presented. He also gives you an opportunity to go deeper if you don't get it the first time through.
My life is super-busy right now and I've had to lay my studies aside for a while. But as soon as I can get back to them I'll hit it hard and learn fast.
Thanks Guy and Thinkspace Education. You are a blessing to me!

Learn Music Theory course highly recommended

I saw a few of Guy's videos on YouTube and found them funny and engaging. I decided to sign up for the Learn Music Theory course as I "compose" music of my own, but can't read music and knew little about music theory. I think the course is excellent and can return to it as often as I like. I would highly recommend it.

These courses got me going

I was starting out with music composition - inspired by Guy Mitchelmore's wonder and eccentric Youtube videos.
I am a programmer by trade and I could see that the way Guy wrote music was similar to coding, except you get an immediate cultural output.
The need to dig in more into theory etc was what encouraged me to sign up to the courses.
They are split into short segments that w=are easy to digest and are helpful.

The trailer course camera focus is less than helpful

The trailer course is very helpful yet I believe I miss too much, however, because the on screen camera of the actors blocks what is is being done within the DAW (especially in the upper corner of Logic) and because often the camera is focused on the actors and not the operations within the DAW; some of the content becomes guesswork & less educational to the student.

Learn Music Theory

I did the 'Learn Music Theory' course over several months in 2020/21. I had very little knowledge of music theory before I started. I took copious notes, and watched all the videos, some of them several times. At the end I had a really good understanding of music theory, and a thirst to find out more, and carry on learning. Guy Mitchelmore is an entertaining and very knowledgeable teacher, who puts the theory over in an understandable way in a series of fairly short videos, so you are not overloaded in one go. The course progresses logically through the various subjects, and by the end you really can do what was promised at the beginning, which is read and understand an orchestral score! I enjoyed the course so much that a year after completing it I started it again, and I am currently working through it for the second time--there is always something new to notice. I thoroughly recommend this course.
