I attended this lifeguard course because it was mandatory for my job, and several of my coworkers and friends were also enrolled, which initially made it feel more positive. However, having already taken this course two years ago with the same instructor, I approached it with caution.

Unfortunately, my concerns were justified.

During my previous course in 2024, the facilities were completely inadequate: no functioning changing rooms, no working showers, and the pool was located in a poorly maintained basement of a low-standard hotel. After finishing the session in freezing February temperatures, I used a working socket to dry my hair. I was then aggressively shouted at by the instructor in front of others, which was humiliating, unnecessary, and unprofessional.

Fast forward to this most recent course which I am required to retake every two years for work and the atmosphere was once again tense, hostile, and intimidating. I constantly felt like I was walking on eggshells, unable to do anything right. The leadership style was passive-aggressive, discouraging, and deeply unprofessional.

During the online portion of the course, I accidentally forgot to turn off my camera and made a private comment to my partner about how boring the session was. Instead of addressing this in a professional or constructive way, I was immediately removed from the course, which directly affected my ability to work.

Overall, this was an incredibly stressful and unpleasant experience. A training environment should be supportive, educational, and respectful, not intimidating or punitive. Unfortunately, this course felt more like an endurance test than a learning experience.

I would not recommend this course unless significant changes are made to how participants are treated.

Triton College is a junior college for those who want to take classes at a slower rate- get your associates degree and take as many years as you'd like.

I knew someone who got his associates in general studies and it took him 10 years.

Triton College has a graduation rate of under 15%.

Go to any department and talk to 5 different employees and ask them the same question and you will get 5 different answers.

This is a place where the employees have no idea what's going on most of the time and will act like you're bothering them and won't want to help you.

The Workforce Equality Initiative or WEI program finally made it's way over to Triton College.

This is a program where you can choose from 13 different trade programs, and they will pay for your classes and books and a work uniform. However, the people that run the program have the same training and attitude- they don't know anything and will have a nasty attitude about it.

Don't get me started on the professors! 95% are jerks, with jerk attitudes that will treat you like trash when you ask a question or need help.

Please fire everyone on the faculty and staff and hire people that actually care and then enroll them all in customer service training because we are customers!

We pay money and time to be here and learn to better ourselves!

We don't need to be applying for classes when people in admissions and the financial aid department will lose track of your submissions and you have to resubmit paperwork and then get a nasty attitude about it. How hard is it to file paperwork? It's not, actually. It goes alphabetically from A to Z, by last name and maybe student ID numbers.

Maybe go to a different college if you actually care about your education and need help from faculty and staff members that know how to treat you as a person.
I also went through their WEI program in 2021 and the classes and books were all free, even the uniform (medical program) was free and that was very nice. If you needed a bus/train pass for the semester, that was free too.
The one thing I had the biggest issue with is: they do not place you in a job in the field. You are told (by watching videos and doing little quizzes) how to make a portfolio: resume, reference list, cover letter, thank you for the interview note and a resignation letter.
What good is it to go through 6 months of trade school when there is NO guarantee for a job in the field? I have spent literally the last 15 months trying to get a job in this field and no one wants to hire someone with 0 years experience, and most of them want 1-5 years experience. Now I feel like a big fat loser when being told repeatedly by head hunters/staffing agencies and hospital HR: "Come back when you have more experience, we do not train students."
I was told by the program head that I should have no problem getting a job asap with no license in the field or experience. Big ole fat lie or that out of touch with reality?
I was placed in this one program with 5 people total, including myself and 0 people made it past the internship and 0 people went on into the field. ZERO.
Personally, I had a family emergency that required my fulltime presence and had to drop out of the internship.
Literally they need to change this program so that the student who spent 6 months to a year training specifically for this trade can get a guaranteed job in the field.
Another minor issue: They've only had this program for 3 years and already the whole staff was fired and replaced. Why? Lack of communication. You have your caseworker and your professors all telling you to do something twice or three times because the staff and faculty in this program do not communicate with one another, so you have to repeat the same thing to three or four different people.
Don't get me started on the poor customer service skills of most of these faculty/staff members. Rude, judgmental and overly unhelpful. So condescending, it wasn't even funny. The adjunct professor herself was new to teaching and she was always upset and angry any time someone didn't turn in homework on time, didn't go to class because of a medical emergency or family emergency or got a bad grade on a quiz. She would literally lecture grown up adults on their failures in her classes, in an angry and condescending tone of voice. People are human and people are not perfect, they will make mistakes especially in school when learning something for the first time.
