Very pleased with the products after trying a single delivery. All cuts of meat were obviously far superior to grocery store meat and my family noticed immediately the high quality, tenderness, and taste. I compared the prices to my online grocer and they were almost exactly the same. Delivery could be faster. Ordering a second box now!

Thank you so much for the review, Stacy! I'm glad you had a great experience but I'm so sorry you weren't as happy after taking a break - that's definitely not what we strive for :(

Hmm - we haven't changed the target weight for our products; we value transparency, so the target weight for each cut is listed in our product descriptions. Stacy, if you're able to send over some extra details to our consumer experience team at info@trulocal.ca we'd love to look into things further!

Thanks again for the review - hope to hear from you soon :)

Poor

Further to my previous review I tried the Salmon and it was good. Just don’t understand why a company that is promoting local is selling products from another country. Also have not heard back about my other concerns that I was told someone was looking into.

Which sustainability certification does this salmon recieve?

The Marine Stewardship Council has many complaints from the fishery industry in Canada and Globally.
Alaska caught 194.8 million salmon in 2025 and 103.5 million in 2024. Some of those salmon would have spawned in B.C. The catch includes all five species of wild Pacific salmon: sockeye, coho, Chinook, chum and pink.
Meanwhile, B.C. caught 2.9 million salmon in 2025 and 2.4 million in 2024.
Alaska’s salmon fisheries also have a globally recognized certification that tells stores and consumers its fish are caught sustainably. The Marine Stewardship Council certification faces some criticisms from conservation groups, but having it helps get fish on shelves and into shopping baskets.
Conservation groups have argued the Marine Stewardship Council sometimes certifies unsustainable fisheries. In 2024, a group of Canadian conservation groups formally objected to Alaska salmon fisheries being recertified they argue that while Canada has been cutting down allowable salmon catch, Alaska is catching too many.
Alaska’s constitution requires fish to be maintained on a “sustained yield principle” in its own state, basically meaning “don’t deplete it.” But it allows a fishery to intercept fish returning to Canadian rivers where salmon stocks are experiencing depletion.
It’s appalling for Alaska to apply a different standard to B.C. fish and the Marine Stewardship Council “is letting them get away with it.”
“Alaska’s indiscriminate harvest is preventing the recovery of vulnerable Chinook, chum, sockeye, coho and steelhead that are headed for Canada,” Aaron Hill, executive director of Watershed Watch Salmon Society, said in a statement about the objection.
Misty MacDuffee, biologist and wild salmon program director with Raincoast Conservation Foundation, argues the Alaskan Chinook fishery “deprives endangered southern resident killer whales of their primary food source.”
Concerns about the Marine Stewardship Council’s certifications go beyond salmon: in March, the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition objected to the Marine Stewardship Council’s decision to recertify the Antarctic krill fishery.

Thank you for the continued feedback, Lorne! I'm glad you enjoyed the salmon; we do source the wild-caught salmon specifically from Alaska due to sustainability certifications that aren't available with Canadian-sourced salmon. Rest assured, the salmon is processed and packaged entirely within Canada by a 100% Canadian company.

With regards to your previous concerns - we have reached out to our suppliers and internally tracked your feedback. We haven't heard similar feedback, and our third-party suppliers didn't provide an exact reason for your experience, but we're doing all we can to ensure future experiences are better.

If you have any further feedback please don't hesitate to email us at info@trulocal.ca! Feel free to reply to the ongoing thread we have as that helps us out a lot with keeping track of things :)

Re: your edit - The salmon is MSC (Marine Stewardship Council)-certified wild-caught sockeye, sustainably harvested from the pristine Alaskan waters and processed in Burnaby, British Columbia. We value transparency, and this information is available on our website in the product description.

Terrible Products Waste Of Money

This is a food subscription service that provides "local" meats, poultry, and prepared foods via online order. It services several provinces. I live in BC so my products came from local BC farms / suppliers. The service is really HIGH PRICED and sadly the quality of the products is truly dismal overall. The Chicken Breasts, whether their "regular" or "organic" were horrible just mushy and damaged meat that had brown areas on it as well. They sell what is stated to be "Filet Mignon" however, it arrives as just being labled plain "Tenderloin Steak" (which is NOT all actually Filet Mignon only a special mid-section is!) it also has no weight on label, but the steaks are tiny, not even 5Oz each! And the steaks are mostly layered Grissel with hardly any meat in between those layers! So tough you can't even chew it at all, like rubber! Additionally, the packaging was not sealed! It leaked juice when defrosted in my fridge, but was supposed to be vacuum packed. So, don't recommend anyone subscribe to this overpriced service ever!! It was a truly disgusting experience! Waste of $165.00!!
EDIT: A week after this review the company reached out to ask me to please stay on the subscription and offered me to redo the box free, OR I could have a $75.00 refund. But, that refund amount would have been less than half of the actual total I paid them. I responded within a few different emails back and forth that since products would always come from those same local BC suppliers I doubted that they'll ever be any better quality, and so I'd declined staying on with them. Then I pointed out that I didn't think their offer of $75.00 was really adequate or appropriate since the products were not eaten and literally had spoiled our plans for a birthday dinner for my Dad! I told them that at that amount it would mean we paid $90.00 to eat 1 single Turkey Breast! Then I informed them I wanted a TOTAL refund of my $165.00, or I would simply do a chargeback on my credit card for not receiving what I ordered to get my money back that way. I also pointed out, that actual price JD Farms charges for the Turkey Breast is $13.34 a lb. and my Turkey Breast was just about 1 pound total weight, not $90 worth! So, at that point finally the company DID provide me a full refund. However, I still do not recommend them for the bad quality of products, and the obvious outrageous markup in prices for products. And, the initial low ball refund offer that only changed once I threatened to do the charge back on card.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, Deb - I'm so sorry you were disappointed with your order! That's not what we strive for, especially for your first box :(

Our prices are definitely comparable to a specialty butcher/grocer, plus the added convenience of delivery to your door. With that being said, the quality of products should definitely match the price point - and what you're describing doesn't meet our standards. I'm going to be passing the feedback on to our team and our third-party suppliers to investigate - we really appreciate you letting us know about this!

We tend to use tenderloin and filet mignon interchangeably, but you are correct in saying there's a slight different between the two. Rest assured, the cuts we ship are specifically filet mignon, even if the third-party packaging has the more general tenderloin label. Again, I'll pass the feedback on to the supplier to see if they can consider being more specific.

We try to be transparent about our sizes, so the target weight of each cut is available in the product description on our website! With that said, the filet mignon should be coming in at 6oz, not under 5 - I sincerely apologize, that's not the size our supplier should be sending us :(

Occasionally, just due to the nature of shipping food products, small holes/ tears can occur in the packaging in transit - so we always recommend thawing things over a plate or bowl just in case of leakage! We include a heads up in our shipping emails just in case, but I know having things leak in your fridge isn't the most pleasant experience - again, I'm very sorry.

I'd love to chat about this further, Deb! If you're able to send us an email to info@trulocal.ca with some photos of the products and their packaging we'd be happy to dig in a little deeper - we'd love to make this right! Hope to hear from you soon :)

Good meat… No customer service

I have been with trulocal for over 5 years and have never had a bad experience that is until I made a request ( first time)to make a change to my order that had NOT been processed yet.
If I had known how complicated this would actually end up being I wouldn’t not have made the request but was assured by (“Ryan” at zendesk) “no problem” I was so pleased I even gave a great review! That was Jan 7/26.
By the Last week of Jan “several emails I said forget it ! After it being paid for and told it still had not left warehouse.
Feb 2 /26 Still no refund .
So if you are sure you will never need any assistance ever “ Meat is good”
For the price though a few live people on staff for hiccups and changes would be recommended.

Thank you so much for your review, Patty - I'm so sorry you had that experience! I looked into your conversation history with us and it looks like you had reached out on your renewal date after payment for your box had gone through; once an order is paid for, your account will "lock" for all changes, and any changes do have to be manually made by our team if we're able to catch a box before it's packed and shipped. In this case I can see Ryan was able to do so successfully despite the order being in progress.

After that, however, it looks like we ran into a bit of trouble; we were temporarily out of a product in your box, which caused a delay at the warehouse. Another product you'd selected was then discontinued, and our system was having issues detecting affected customers who needed to be reached out to. This is why you didn't see any heads up emails - they're typically automated but our system wasn't cooperating with us. I sincerely apologize - I know delays are frustrating, especially without any communication, and I completely understand why you'd cancel your order after waiting so long.

With that said I do see your order was canceled by our team and that a full refund was processed on January 21st, and those funds should have been made available on January 23rd. If you don't see that reflected on your statement, your best bet is to reach out to your bank directly. If your bank isn't seeing it, please let us know - we can provide some extra details you can share with your bank to help them track down that refund :)

I do see you've canceled your subscription, which is completely fair - but we'd love a chance to make this right! If you reach out to us we'd be happy to help reinstate your subscription and see what we can do about compensation. Thanks again for the review, and we hope to hear from you soon!

I have been with Trulocal for 5 1/2 years. It’s been a great experience! It’s always delivered when they say it will be, and everything is so very delicious! For example, we love the back ribs! The servings are substantial and the trim is so very good. The salmon filets are so good and simple to cook with a griller. I had one delivery problem in all that time - my box was missing our ribs - oh no!!! Whenever I phone, the response is great! They would have made a special delivery of ribs but I said to just double up next time, which they did. I’m a big fan!!!

Hi Shannon,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! I'm so sorry you had that experience - that's definitely not what we strive for :(

I was able to see your initial call, where you were hoping to cancel an order that had already shipped. Typically we'll ask that any order changes - including cancelations - be made prior to being billed, and we'll send a reminder text and email two days beforehand just in case. As an exception we did request our courier bring the box back to our warehouse to hopefully cancel the order.

Before processing a refund we needed to ensure this was possible, which was why we didn't set that up right away - again, I'm so sorry for any confusion! I totally understand there could have been more clarity on that timeline, so I'm very sorry for any miscommunication.

Looking into our records I do see you had called in a couple of times to follow up before the team was able to get back to you; I can see your first call came in after hours on a Thursday, and your next call came in on the Friday that the team had off and so phones weren't monitored. I do see you called again on Monday, and the team was able to return that call within two hours (the team is in Ontario so we tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to calling back other provinces if there's a time difference, which is why we didn't call first thing in the morning).

I can confirm your refund was processed successfully, and that the team was able to manually cancel your subscription on your behalf. Again, I sincerely apologize for the experience - we're grateful for the feedback to see where we can improve!

Changing grocery shopping forever

My experience has been more than great. I've been using true local for many years now. And I will not switch. Service is amazing. It saves me so much time. My family, my children all feel it differently with their health eating better quality meat. As a health practitioner. I recommend this to all of my clients as well appear. The support staff is great when you need help.

I highly recommend trying out true local. They'll change the way you grocery shop

This is a really well run company

This is a really well run company. The odd time you will run into an issue like a really chewy steak you cant eat or some freezer burnt meat on arrival.

If you send them pictures of the meat and package they will replace it for you.

Prices are bit tough on the wallet but I think its expected with good quality meat, shipped to your door.

Love this company and hope the customer service never changes.

I used to order from them regularly but…

I used to order from them regularly but stopped because their packaging is never fully sealed — which is a serious health hazard.

Every time I move meat from the freezer to the fridge to defrost, it LEAKS and creates a mess. At first, they apologized and refunded me.

But now that it’s been happening every single month, this is the response I just received (super unprofessional IMO - not my problem that your delivery partner chucks the packages.
It’s your responsibility to ensure that what your customers pay for is delivered in a clean and health-hazard free way)—

“ My supervisor has let me know that we won't be able to issue any further refunds or replace any further packages if this situation happens again, since this is something that occurs while your box is in transit and not in our possession.”

So if you are want to guarantee that your meat is health-hazard free - pick another provider.

These guys don’t really care.

Hey Danny,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! That's definitely not what we strive for and I'm so sorry for your experience with us.

We, unfortunately, don't do any of the packaging of the products ourselves; everything we offer comes in pre-packaged and pre-processed by our third-party suppliers. Occasionally, just due to the nature of shipping food products, small holes/tears can occur in the packaging in transit - but this won't impact the health/safety or quality of the product.

We always recommend thawing things over a plate or a bowl just to avoid a mess; this is something we say in all of our shipping emails and it's something we'll always bring up directly if someone does experience leakage. Looking into your account I do see you had previously reached out about the issue and that we had compensated for the trouble - but since the safety and quality aren't being impacted, the refunds and replacements were more of a goodwill gesture for the mess they made thawing.

Again, I'm very sorry you've had this experience! I can confirm this has been flagged to the appropriate team and escalated so we can work with our third-party supplier on the matter. We really appreciate you letting us know about this and following up!

Very expensive per kilogram

I buy a lot of steaks from my local butcher, which are really good. I mainly buy ribeye steaks and that's what I bought from TruLocal.

Unfortunately even with a 25% off coupon, the steaks worked out to be $70/kg.

That is almost twice as much as what I pay at my local butcher shop, for fresh steaks.

And even though the steaks are good, they're not twice the price good.

I also noticed that some of the steaks had an odd texture.

I don't really know how to explain it, but it was not a meat texture that's for sure. It was just an odd texture that I've had with a few of the steaks.

Packaging was fine, the shipping was fast and these stakes were Frozen when they came.

So all of that was great it's just the price of it was not worth it for me.

I'd say maybe if you have a little extra money to spare, and you don't mind paying for the convenience of local meats coming to your doorstep, then this is probably for you.

But even with a coupon this was expensive.

Hey Nathan,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! I'm so sorry the ribeye steaks weren't the quality you expected for what you paid - that's definitely not what we strive for.

Like you touched on, it's definitely a more premium product in general – it is more expensive to raise and process than what you may typically find at your larger conventional grocers. Unfortunately, transparency isn’t always the easiest thing to find at a conventional grocery chain.

Our main focus is transparency and quality. With us, you have the peace of mind knowing exactly where in your province the meat is coming from and how it is raised, you have direct access to information about the supplier and each cut, and the convenience of having it delivered straight to you 😊

With that said, the quality absolutely should be matching up to the price point! I'm glad everything came in frozen and on time but I'm so sorry the steaks had an unusual texture. This is definitely something I'd like to bring up to our team - if you happen to be able to send a photo of the packaging to info@trulocal.ca with the lot/batch number or production/packaged on date visible, that would help us out a lot when we investigate!

Thank you again for the review - hope to hear from you soon with those photos, we'd love to turn this around for you :)

I always praised the wonderful customer service at trulocal. However that ended with my most recent order. I had ordered a chuck roast, which took up over half my points. Hey Enid,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review! I'm so sorry you were disappointed with your chuck roast, and the level of service you received - that's definitely not what we strive for :(

I do see you were chatting with one of our team members about the roast you ordered. Thank you so much for sharing those photos with us so we could look into things a bit and explain what might have happened; the flash freezing process can affect the shape of the meat in its frozen state, but when cooked the roast will look more like the photo reference we have on the website. With that said, that's completely fair you'd be concerned about how that roast looked when it arrived - especially when you take the points value of the product into consideration.

I've passed your feedback on to our team and our third-party supplier to look into; please know we take feedback like this seriously and we're always looking for ways to improve our products and our service.

In the meantime, I'd love to make this right for you! We'll typically offer loyalty rewards points as compensation, but I do see you've canceled your subscription - so I've processed a partial refund of $65 back to your payment method for the disappointing roast. Please note this may take a couple of days to reflect on your credit card statement.

Again, thank you so much for bringing this to our attention, Enid! Please feel free to reach out to us any time if you have any other concerns.

Reliable service & delicious high quality meats!

I've been using Tru Local for 2 years now and I enjoy the service! I like that I can order directly from local farmers and that I can get the information on the farmer from tru locals website so I can make ethical decisions and support local producers. I also appreciate that I can choose grass-fed options for much of the meat. For the delivery- I have always had great service. The package arrives within a couple of days of payment and is thoroughly frozen and can be easily placed in the freezer. On the occasion where I miss the courier, I haven't had any issues picking it up the next day or the product not being frozen enough. Overall, I would recommend tru local to anyone!

Hey Adrienne,

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us. We're terribly sorry for any disappointment caused by your recent order.

We tend to rotate our inventory on hand very frequently to ensure that our customers are receiving fresh products in every box! While it is true that our products can last up to 12 months in the freezer, since they are vacuum sealed and blast frozen, I'm wondering if there may be an error on the label itself.

Please feel free to send us an email at info@truloca.ca including the lot/batch number from the packaging and we'll be sure to look into this right away and make things right.

Thanks again for sharing your feedback with us, Adrienne. We look forward to hearing from you!
