Why did I pay for a damp survey …

It was fairly obvious that I had a damp problem on the interior walls of the gable end of our bungalow as part of that wall had an attached garage it was confusing. We also found a small mushroom on the rear wall in the small unused bedroom. I decided we needed professional help from a surveyor and found one online. I paid £40 for Mr Hammond to do a survey. His survey told me I had damp! Then offered to send a quote from the above company and explained I needed to see a builder and re plaster both rooms on the gable end. The quote was around £3000 no mention of the mushroom or the danger of not exploring and dealing with that.
I’m totally confused about what a qualified surveyor is supposed to do.
