Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 70 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Consumers consistently explain that getting necessary medical and dental claims approved is a major uphill battle because the business routinely denies essential coverage. Many individuals feel entirely forced to fight through endless paperwork and formal appeals just to receive the basic benefits they were originally promised. Some reviewers were not happy with the customer service, noting that getting transferred repeatedly and dealing with unhelpful staff is extremely frustrating. People also mentioned dealing with unexpected financial surprises, such as sharply rising monthly premiums and steep out-of-pocket expenses for routine care.

I have my 95 year old mother’s power of attorney and I stupidly enrolled her in this ripoff company’s advantage plan. I have never hated an insurance company as much as I hate these people. For one year straight they charged her for both the advantage plan and medicare supplement. I had to file a complaint with our state’s Insurance Commissioner to get them to refund her. They constantly harass her with mailings for an in home visit with bribery of giving you a Visa card if you do. Can you believe this? I have called and written numerous times to stop and they persist bordering on harassment. Don’t consider this company for healthcare. You will be sorry. Next week I hope to enroll her with a decent company that respects her wishes and realize she has a doctor and she is healthy for her age and she doesn’t need one of their preying in home visits. They need to back off.

I just spent an hour on the phone with a UHC representative. I felt like I was talking to someone who was hammered on something. I didn't yell, I didn't scream, the only thing I mentioned was that from my experiences with UHC, I definitely would deem them the Dollar Store of Medical Insurers. The woman on the other end of the phone was getting so irate that before putting me on hold she said, "I don't like you talking to me in vorocative language." I told her to hold on and I Google the word "vorocotive, which isn't a part of any language on Earth. I told her this and asked her what planet she was from. She put me on hold! And I hung up.

The customer service is terrible

The customer service is terrible. They do not know what they are doing with their jobs. I went through appeal with them. They are confused about whether it is covered or not covered by that insurance. The insurance changed to a new doctor for me which I did not request. The new doctor's customer service is awful. I am fed up with them. UHC is the worst health insurance I ever had. I will change to new health insurance soon.

Careless Disregard for Life

My pulmonologist prescribed oxygen for nocturnal hypoxia, but UH denied it, requiring a second sleep study. While I can understand that, my low oxygen is in the danger zone, where I can die in my sleep. If they cared, they would at LEAST allow the 02 in the interim, until the further tests are done. Careless, irresponsible and despicable!

Read ALL the fine print of your contract policy before signing

First off, they won't approve a 90 day supply of a daily thyroid med I've been taking for 14 years. Then the person told me to tell the pharmacy to use an override code to give me multiple 30 day supplies. The pharmacist told me that's insurance fraud. Good times. Then I find out my $7500 deductible is $7500 for AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE, so in reality it's a $15000 deductible but no only that, in reality it could be as much as $28000 since I have a family of four. If we all had expenses totaling $7000 and none of us ever hit the $7500, insurance won't kick in. Wow. That wasn't in the brochure or marketing.

I am so frustrated with this company

I am so frustrated with this company. I had a lab drawn, same day, and same time and two of the seven things they were looking for were not reimbursed. I have now spent 1 hr. and 11 minutes on the phone with United. Supervisors name was Maria. They said they can send it for review and it will take 30 to 60 days to have an answer. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR UNITED HEALTHCARE!!

What a bunch of useless do nothings!

What a bunch of useless do nothings! Customer service is clearly in India or Indonesia. You will always get them first and must request English speaking reps. Then when you get them, they do absolutely nothing in regard to your inquiries. It is a vicious circle of non responsive incompetents that say they will call you back or email you and as soon as they are off the phone, you are forgotten. This is the most worthless company possible.

United doesn't pay

As provider to several thousand United customers I can tell you the way they are so profitable is by not paying providers. They find any way possible to audit and deny claims for medical supplies ordered by patients doctors and supported by medical documentation. They continually violate Medicare advantage guidelines which are supposed to mirror traditional Medicare. Amazing how CMS,OIG,DOJ don't investigate this company and hold their executives responsible. I guess when you pay enough lobbyists and contribute to politicians you can perpetrate fraudulent practices.

This company works hard to NOT PAY your benefits.
My husband has paid for these benefits for years and when it was time to use them, the company put him through the ringer. Making statements that we didn't send in an "overpayment" of over $5000. LIARS, CHEATS, WORTHLESS.

Terrible experience with this company

Terrible experience with this company. They make billing a complete mess. If you have out of network doctors, they cover a tiny fraction of the cost if any and inundate you with paperwork to submit and track. They then send you statements that aren't accurate.

Withholding money from customers.

For almost 10 months, my money that I advanced for buying medication has been withheld from me. Every time I contact customer services, I get a different response on why I am still waiting for my money from my claim and that I have to resubmit the same document for the third time. I feel UHCSR is just trying to make their customers tired until they just give up on getting their money.
I also talked to other people who use the Student Resources of UHC and they told me similar stories.

I'm just trying to PAY

I have tried on 3 occasions now to pay my first premium through debit card unsuccessfully due to UHC not processing the payment when they say they will. The first time, I received an email saying "payment received policy active!" it was not actually received nor even processed by UHC and my policy was not active. UHC didn't process the payment until the next afternoon when my bank account no longer had transactions turned on. The second time, the very next day on a Friday, I called and asked for a reprocess and asked when EXACTLY the payment would be processed since I needed to know when to have transactions turned on. I was told reprocessing happens 12am-5am but that it wouldn't be until Monday or Tuesday. It pulled the very next day, Saturday, when I had my account transactions on hold so that the money would be there on Monday. So declined again. Today I tried to call for ANOTHER reprocessing, and when I finally made it to the right department (since you provide the same exact phone number for different departments. Literally look at your contact page, the numbers for dental and short term are exactly the same) of course the system was down. My policy has been cancelled twice in the very first week that I was supposed to have it, and your service reps don't even know when you process payments. This is completely and utterly unacceptable. I WORK in insurance and can't even figure out how to just pay my freaking premium to you. This is people's health you are playing with. Disgusting.

This company exemplifies what is wrong…

This company exemplifies what is wrong with the Healthcare system. Here is an example: I have a 6 k deductible and out of pocket per year. I have met that financial responsibility in April..after that I should be covered at 100%. I was hospitalized in November and I am looking at a $891 bill for treatment in November. Upon calling them, "oh, sir that is the patient's responsibility". How could I be at 100% midyear and not at end of year. "Sir, we had a coding error on our side on one of your earlier claims which took you out of the 100% coverage status, but we have fixed that error"..but $891 is still my responsibility? "yes", but that was due to your mistake "Let me investigate..." People running this company should all be arrested...

Dear Sir Andrew,

Medicare Supplement No.: 399182845-11
AARP Medicare RX: 0090057951

I had to travel to Virginia from California. At the airport security, the TSA took out my medicines, and forgot to put them back.

The two medicines I lost was:

1. Synthroid 50 microgram
2. Januvia 100 mg.

I am going to be in Virginia for 30 days. So, I need 30 tablets each.

I spoke to optum pharmacy. No one understands English. Maybe this is on purpose.

I need these medicines immediately.

Can one of your executives speak to the folks at optumrx and expedite so that I can get the above two medicines at a local CVS here.

Can I count on you? I am a diabetic.

Best Regards,
Narayana Srinivasan

Deceptive and Fraudulent Processes By United Healthcare

March 24, 2022

Mr. Andew Witty,
CEO, United Healthcare
11000 Optum Circle
Eden Prairie, MN 55344

Dear Sir Andrew,

Medicare Supplement No.: 399182845-11

Yesterday, March 22, 2022, I received a letter from Dianne Brunker, Director of Operations, without any address.
If that letter had provided her address, I would have contacted her.
I don’t know what is wrong with your company.
All the letters come without any address—an indication of deception, fraud and corruption. Hence this letter is directed to you.

Note: I have paid in full, for both my wife and me for the whole year 2022.

The letter dated March 22, 2022 is a bill for the entire year of 2023!!. This is only March, 2021.
The open season for Medicare is from October to December. Pray, tell me, why are you billing me for the next year? That is one year ahead of time!!

I may choose to change the insurance company during the open season considering the deceptive collection techniques of United Healthcare.

By billing me one year ahead, you will also be pocketing the interest on the premium I pay !!

As I noted above, I have paid in full for both my wife and me for the whole year 2022 !!
The letter from Dianne Brunker, Director of Operations, without any address, dated March 22 also demands an additional payment of $318.78 for the month of December 2022 without any explanation !!

1. Why do you want me to pay for the year 2023 in March 2022?
2. Why do you want me to pay $318.78 for December 2022?

I am sorry, are you all a bunch of knaves and corrupt people? Money! Money!

Best Regards,
Narayana Srinivasan
