I visited the Van Gogh Museum for a special exhibition and the permanent collection. The artwork itself is genuinely stunning and the way it's presented is really well done... you can't just pass by, stop and look.
That said, the experience was not so perfect, because even early in the day there were too many people.

Horrible nasty staff

Horrible nasty staff, extremely unhelpful and mannerless don't know how to deal with tourist in the event of accidentally using the exit door instead of using the entrance door. Wonder how she's even managed to secure this job. The lady with curly hair glasses and sharp nose and with a filthy tongue. If there's amanagement surely need to investigate this event that happened 10 minutes ago. That behaviour absolutely of order and totally unacceptable. WOUD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE STEPPING IN THIS PLEASE let alone visit the museum.
Truly horrible first experience in Amsterdam.

My husband and I really wanted to visit the Van Gogh Museum during our stay in Amsterdam. We went there yesterday to buy tickets and were told they could only be purchased online. Today we went with our tickets, and like several people ahead of us in line, we were told we had bought the wrong tickets. We had tickets for an exhibition 30 minutes away from the Van Gogh Museum. We bought the tickets on the Van Gogh Museum website. If so many people are buying the wrong tickets, the problem is probably with the website. We were very disappointed and couldn't get to the other exhibition in time. We might as well have thrown our money out the window.

Nasty information kiosk lady

It was cool to see some of van goghs works but the museum was just waaaay too busy and packed with tourists taking selfies of themselves.
I must report that the information desk lady, sitting next to the audio tour hand out, was particularly obnoxious to me and ruined the experience. She refused to help me open a locker, eyes rolling back in her sockets in disgust at me for being so stupid...and when i asked for her name, she lost it and started barking that its just past 9am and how dare i disrespect her. She tells me "you weren't nice to me so now i dont have to be nice to you" Nasty experience at the museum. (18 june 2025, 9am tour)

A real eyeopener

A real eyeopener. I knew of Van Goth of course but would not say I was a fan. All that has changed now. A fantastic tribute to a great artist, I'm now a fan boy. If you have looked at a single painting and thought, "that's nice", you must go. Packing examples of his work, side pieces which give a greater understanding of a particular work and information boards, you come away so much wiser, so in tune. The VR near the end is a total MUST. Not a think about it but a total MUST. I still tingle when I think about it. Written by someone who WAS not a big fan before.

The Pokemon Trading Company and Van…

The Pokemon Trading Company and Van Gogh Collaboration is problematic from the start. Merchandise is released bit by bit.. and Exclusive items are reserved for Museum staff. And kept away from the public. Then when they bought the stuff. It is placed on Marktplaats or ebay for quick bucks. That is like inside trading.

Also stopping the promocard, because of a few people that are buying and trading the card. Isn't it just plain stupid. The card is coming from a Pokémon Trading Company. Exactly Trading Company... the name says it all. But the Museum is in shock.

Pokemon event

Unfortunately due to the terrible organization of the collaboration with Pokemon Center and because of a few uncivilized incompetents, people like me who booked a trip to Amsterdam (and subsequent reservation at the Museum hosted by the event in question) SPECIFICALLY to receive the promotional card "Pikachu in the gray felt hat", spending a lot of money, find themselves badly screwed... and absolutely disappointed...
Great incompetence this time. It is useless to mention at this point (14/10) the safety of the museum, because from now on we have to be afraid... The official announcement of the interruption seems to me to be just an attitude of those who want to get out clean at the expense of innocent people ..
It is not possible for us to get refunds, so we will evaluate whether to go to the museum anyway or not...

Disgraceful management...

I bought a bunch of tulips at a nearby market to bring home with me. I had booked tickets to the Van Gogh Museum (one of the most expensive museums I've ever visited) and was pulled out of the queue by security who told me I couldn't bring the flowers into the museum. I explained that I was going to put them in a locker inside. I was told I couldn't bring the flowers into the building. This is fine as a policy, but if you're going to do this make sure you publish it on your website. I asked to speak to a manager. A woman came out and shouted at me about how there could be insects in the flowers that could destroy the paintings. I explained that I understood this, but the website needs to state this explicitly. My friend asked the woman to provide a solution, to which she told us to find somewhere to store the flowers and that they would hold our time slot for us. I have never encountered such disgraceful service anywhere. The entire city is a tourist trap with unfriendly servers and this absolutely was the straw that broke the camels back in Amsterdam. I will not be returning and I advise others to steer clear. There are far better cities and museums with staff who know how to treat people. It's a travesty that Van Gogh's work has been left in the care of these people.

Disgusting customer service

Was supposed to be visiting today. Wasn’t allowed to keep suitcase at hotel nor were we allowed to bring it in to Van Gogh museum. Nearly 50 euros on tickets and not only are we not allowed in, also not allowed a refund. Disgusting customer service.

One of favorite museums

Visited this museum twice. And I would say this is one of the best attractions in Amsterdam. Both times we had excellent guides who are so in love with what they do! If you are into art, and especially impressionists, you just must visit this museum :)

Booked tickets in advance with family

Booked tickets in advance with family. Were still left in a snaking que around the museum for 1.2 hours. Fat people were allowed in a que free entrance. It was a chilly day in June. I was at the museum over 14 years before and I remember the art was laid out in a more co ordinated way than it is now. I was offended to see "van gogh" minions and other belittle cartoons projected onto a wall inside.- That's not Van Gogh! Inside there were several Africans standing around with badges and over size Jackets that were given to them by management. That was a "job". They were obviously rescued from the Med from a sinking traffic boat and obviously knew very little about Van Gogh. In fact they were standing in peoples way most of the time and it was very busy as usual. I was excited to show my child around the museum as they love art. The child thought the museum was absolutely crap. This time I agree..
