If you have an under an hour layover, avoid this airport. It is made for your inconvenience and the many pass and security control equipped with the rudest personnel will add to your desperation

Vienna Airport

For the second time in a year I have not received my VAT refund. This time round I informed the wheel chair man that I wanted to obtain my VAT refund of just under 2,000 Euros. He was too busy ogling women than to pay attention to my request. Then when we went to the station to obtain it the woman said “you have to obtain this BEFORE security!!” When I asked him to take me back he said “I can’t do that without my supervisor’s approval”! 😩 Even though I still had an hour to take off to HRW I never saw him again! If I weren’t in a wheelchair this would not have happened! Also the woman said I could obtain it in the UK; however that stopped four years ago!!! If I didn’t love Vienna in every way except here I would strongly advise other travelers to visit by train or car NOT the airport!!

Vienna Airport

Vienna Airport – A Former Showcase That Has Lost Its Shine

I have known Vienna Airport for more than 25 years. I remember it as an exceptionally clean, elegant and well-maintained place that reflected Austria’s high standards of quality and hospitality. It was a genuine showcase of the country.

Unfortunately, my experience on 10 October 2026 was in striking contrast to those memories.

The airport appeared tired and neglected, with visibly worn seating and an overall atmosphere that fell considerably short of what I would expect from a major European international airport.

Particularly disappointing was Jamie Oliver’s Bar, where the tables were dirty, sticky and clearly had not been properly cleaned. I genuinely hesitated to rest my hands on the table. Such conditions are simply unacceptable.

The prices were equally astonishing. At Jamie’s Deli, an unappealing sandwich was priced at €13. Elsewhere, Coca-Cola cost €5 and a supposedly fresh orange juice, served in a sealed plastic cup, was priced at €8.

I have no objection to premium prices when they are justified by quality, cleanliness and service. Unfortunately, that was not the case here.

What concerns me most is not the price of a sandwich or the condition of an individual chair. It is the overall impression that an airport once associated with Austrian excellence has gradually lost some of its former quality, character and dignity.

An international airport is more than a transport hub or a commercial space. For many visitors, it represents their first and last impression of a country.

Vienna Airport once represented a standard that others could admire. I sincerely hope it has not lost the ambition to do so again.

If you have any need for assistance out of the self-service realm (I did not but MANY do), this is not the place for you. Further, the price of food (a rock-hard pretzel) is horrendous. To have to wait to even sit in your boarding area is ridiculous, and the people are just rude. Really makes the US airports look like a breeze!

Vienna Airport: The Cherry on Top after bad Travel Experience with Austrian Airlines

After a mind-blowingly bad experience flying with Austrian Airlines, which I can, in good conscience, describe as the worst long-haul flight I have ever taken, Vienna Airport was the perfect cherry on top.
The airport itself certainly knows how to leave a lasting impression. The prices, for example, are wonderfully reasonable: a small, rock-hard pretzel can be yours for the modest price of €5.30. An absolute bargain. 🤦🏻‍♀️
At this point, I genuinely struggle to understand all the good reviews on Google. Maybe we visited a different Vienna Airport?
Between the overall experience and the almost comical pricing, this was definitely memorable just not in the way an airport should aim for.

Coming from airport Zürich

Coming from airport Zürich, I am very disappointed with Vienna Airport. For an international airport, it is unacceptable that almost all shops and restaurants are closed after 10:00 PM. Many international flights arrive or depart late in the evening, and passengers should have access to food, drinks, and basic services at all hours.

An airport that serves travelers from around the world should offer more amenities during the night. Closing everything so early does not meet the expectations of an international hub. I hope the airport management improves its late-night services for future passengers.

They don't even deserve one star!

They don't even deserve one star!
After arriving in Vienna, I was sitting in the terminal waiting for my husband and my connecting flight to Shanghai. Without any explanation, three police officers approached me, asked for my passport and boarding pass, spoke to someone on the phone, and took a photo of my passport.
I even asked if I had done something wrong, and they simply replied, "No." They gave me no explanation for why I was being stopped.
What made this experience especially upsetting was that it felt like I was singled out because I wear a hijab. Shortly after speaking to me, the officers approached another woman wearing a hijab as well.

They also told me to go to a specific gate even though my flight wasn't for another four hours and even instructed me where to sit. The whole experience made me feel like I wasn't free to move around the airport and left me feeling humiliated and discriminated against. I felt like I was under constant suspicion for no reason. Everyone was looking at us too! Like I committed some crime.
I've never felt so uncomfortable while traveling, and this experience seriously affected my impression of the airport.

Worst Lounge Experience: Aggressive Management & Verbal Abuse!

As a frequent business traveler, I have never experienced such an appalling lack of professionalism. Due to misleading information on the Vienna Airport website regarding Austrian Airlines business class access, there was initial confusion. An older, grey-haired female manager allowed my 4-year-old son and me into the Vienna Lounge (Terminal D), but shortly after, she created a terrifying and hostile situation over a small plate of food I took for my child.
Instead of communicating like a professional, she chased me through the lounge, screamed at me, and publicly humiliated me by calling me a "Betrügerin" (fraud/cheater) in front of my frightened child and numerous other passengers. She even threatened me with the police. I remained calm and politely asked for her name, to which she aggressively replied that it was "völlig wurscht" (completely irrelevant). The food was ultimately just thrown in the trash—a pure power trip.
This was unhinged behavior, zero empathy for a child, and clear discrimination against a foreigner. I have independent witnesses for this incident. An absolute disgrace for an international airport!

A very unpleasant experience

The staff at security were very rude and refused to give any information about the long queues at security. The passengers felt they were being treated like suspects. We were packed into tiny buses like cattle, then the doors were closed but the bus didn't move. It was very hot. A pregnant lady on the bus fainted. The group I was with and I felt very angry at how we were treated.

The employees are openly hostile

The employees are openly hostile. They shouted at the people from my flight from Vienna to Sofia, treating us as cattle. The Bratislava airport is much nicer, safer and a less stressful way to continue or finish a trip.

Super terrible airport especialy for transits. If you just step out of the plane they force you to go again to Security check. Once Arrived at the Security hall the horror starts, totaly unorganized one big mess and that results in mega long cues, and a lot of passengers did not make it to their connection even though when you one hour before your connection departs you will not make it. It happened at this airport twice to me, and today almost again but because I was an ashole and skipped throug the cues with sorry, sorry I miss my flight I made it…. This is the worst airport in Europe and I will ask my company to never ever book a connection via Vienna!

I just wanted to leave that country and never return

For more than 45 minutes, an immigration officer kept adding and re‑adding my entries and exits in the Schengen area, determined to catch me overstaying the 90‑day limit within a 180‑day period. He simply would not let it go. I was left standing at his window while he tapped through dates on both his computer and his phone, without explanation. Only at the very end did he finally decide to tell me why he had been calculating all those dates. The situation felt hostile. He was sad he had not won.

Worst airport experience ever in 56…

Worst airport experience ever in 56 years of air travel.
There was some snow overnight (about 5-10cm max). We had no trouble getting on a tram at 4.30am and then a train at 5am. And there were taxis and cars driving with no issue. But this small snowfall brought Vienna airport to its knees (in a city where winter snow is usual). Our flight was supposed to depart at 7.15am. It was cancelled, as were hundreds of other flights as the airport shut entirely. We got rebooked onto the 5.10pm flight which eventually left at almost 10pm. Dumped back into London past midnight and thankfully caught the last tube home. How do other airports in snowy locations manage? Oslo? Moscow? Montreal? These airports don’t stop for 10cm of snow. I suggest it’s Vienna airports’ owners refusing to put the investment required into the airport for snow, preferring to pay their private equity shareholders huge dividends instead. Vienna was lovely, but I wouldn’t bother returning in any months between November to March because a bit of snow and you risk getting stranded ( there were two BA flights after the 5.10pm and both got cancelled entirely so those 400 passengers either had to sleep on the floor in the airport with kids and baggage or try a find a hotel room with thousands of other stranded passengers).
The Austrian state owns a chunk of the airport. I suggest it exerts more control over the way it’s managed.

The airport has collapsed for the…

The airport has collapsed for the second time this year due to snowfall. For an Alpine country that prides itself on 'winter-ready' infrastructure, this is an operational disgrace. The management has left thousands stranded with at least a 12-hour service failure. Rebooked 13 hours late onto a flight that is already suffering from rolling delays. Unprofessional, fragile, and a total reputational failure.

Although many of the gates have been completely empty the aircraft from Innsbruck parked infront of F13 followed by a lengthy trip with an airport bus. This happens all the times. They are completely unable to send at least two buses for one Embraer. Then it looks like rush hour in London or Paris. The management is completely unresposive and not able to organize ordinary arrival or departure. It was communicated many times but it is very bad and unresponsive. One of the worst European airports.
