Information provided by various external sources

It all started in 1999 when our founder, Kevin Sproles, then 16 years old, started building custom websites for clients. Talking to customers, and building their dream was a passion from the beginning. Doing it all, from sales to support, to product design, Kevin knew what needed to happen to be able to help more people, and soon the first version of Volusion was born: an all-in-one tool for people to run their business. From the beginning, it was easy to use, and we were there if you needed help. Today, that’s still true. Kevin and 250+ more Volusioneers are a phone call away, 24x7 to help you reach your goals. And product innovation is at the forefront. This is only the beginning… just wait, we’ve got even more great things in store for you to come.

Why can't you host our BLOG site?!

We have to have our related blog hosted by another site. It would be WONDERFUL if we could just have it on Volusion. Perhaps you could consider adding blog hosting to your list of options(?) I know we would appreciate it.

Experience was five star

Experience was five star! After selecting a new Theme to re-skin our web site, project leader was assigned to project with a team of individuals helping answer question and lead in getting specific tasks accomplished. Team members were very accommodating and helpful in site going live. We are still in the process of improving site to accommodate a wholesale side. Very pleased in working with Volusion folks. Thanks

Great for selling widgets! Good in house and 3rd party support

We are an experienced E-Commerce company. Coming from a custom built solution to a hosted platform had many challanges associated. Volusion transition has been both good and bad. I’ll start with the good:
1- Awesome support hours: 24/7/365 via live chat and at least 12 hours a day of phone support. All located in Austin, TX. 4 out of 5 are knowledgeable which is good. Odds are I call back and get an answer! Their strongest selling point IMO.
2- Fair cost. Top tier package is reasonably priced. No contract based on revenue. Bandwidth plays a role in fees over 30GB a month for top tier plans.
3- Reliable. A few system slowdowns in a year but Volsuion is reponsive and fixed within a few minutes.
4- Volusion experts- 3rd party web developers are good for this platform. MAK Digital does a great job. Optimum7 is good too.

The bad:
1- If you have an existing ecommerce site and wish to use 301 redirects, make sure you do not have any special characters as a standard part of your old web site’s URL. Ours had a ? On each page. Ie- yoursite.u/product=?301320. Volusion cannot redirect anything with a ? Because of this we lost our entire natural rankings on the internet.
2- Certain features on the front end cannot be modified and can be a deterrent for shoppers on your site like: Quantity discount display: when adding to cart, a popup window shows the non-discounted price. In the shopping cart, the quantity proce shows up as 2 line items. 1 for full list price and a seperate one below showing the quantity discount. Can’t it simply show as 1 line item?

OUTSTANDING SERVICE

I change my website from WIX to Volusion in September 2018 and have had outstanding technical support no matter which plan you have. Personal, Plus35, Professional or Business plan. Waiting time is minimal and you always have the option for a call back. So far the longest wait I have had has been about 20 minutes day or night. Support personnel go out of there way to correct your issue and will stay on the phone with you till it gets corrected to your sanctification. Keep up the outstanding work.

Largely a good experience

Largely a good experience. Every ecommerce offering has its plusses and minuses, and it's hard to get the best of every one in a single service. With an upgraded account you have access to good import/export utilities and the google API which makes it simple to make bulk changes and publish your feed to sites like google, et al.

I'm not a fan of the walled garden of images and pages. If I have a few hundred or thousand images to manage, the thumbnail and alternate image sizes are not trivial to change. You must resize them on your own and store them using the Volusion naming scheme, as only those file names are used for the specific image types…for example we recently changed templates and the file sizes uploaded were not appropriate for the new template. Files needed to be re-exported out locally from master PSD files and saved using the Volusion scheme and re-uploaded. Sure, it's a simple Photoshop batch operation, but one that shouldn't have to be done.

And, other cart software may allow a designer to make specific changes to category and product pages as far as content goes. But, with Volusion if the field is not specifically outlined as one of the sparse variables you can enable/disable, then you're out of luck. We wanted to display our part number--a common field in the database-- on our category pages and in the shopping cart. In other software it may have been as simple as editing those page templates and adding the [productnumber] field. But, with Volusion it was a clumsy hack to get them displaying on the category page. I'm still waiting to hear from the dev team as to how we might get it listed in the cart.

But, it's not all bad. Those two negatives notwithstanding, the experience has been positive. The free templates offer a good starting point for those with modest CSS and HTML experience. The API generates good code that uploads to google well. Managing the SEO at a product level is fairly straight forward, if not for a slew of clicks to get there on a product by product basis. Once done, our rankings on the search engines rise quickly. And, customer service is responsive and usually able to offer constructive suggestions.
