Worst vet experience of my life!!!

Absolutely horrendous and stressful experience. Never again will i use or recommend this vet to anyone!
Took our elderly cat who was having issues with her mouth/ teeth to be told without much examination at all a couple of months back, that she needed a dental procedure and tooth extractions at a significant cost. Eventually got her booked in following lots of hassle due to being told one branch of the vets didn’t have the xray equipment needed, then another branch had that equipment but didn’t have another piece of equipment needed for the procedure - this was hassle in itself before we even got started.
The day of the dental surgery came, my partner and i were extremely anxious due to our cat being almost 15 years old and we understand there is a higher risk to the anaesthetic for elderly cats. Arrived for our appointment and were asked to wait as i expected, though i had expected this to have been a few minutes given we were booked in for a procedure. 30 mins passed from the time of our appointment without us being advised anything by the reception. I had to ask the receptionist how much longer we should expect to be waiting as our elderly house cat was booked in for surgery first thing, we had been waiting 30 mins already and she was getting more and more agitated and stressed with the situation and being stuck in her cat carrier for the length of time which she had. We were concerned and anxious enough as it was with her having to go under anaesthetic and we were becoming even more concerned that this additional stress would bring further risks.
We continued to wait until 40 mins had passed, at which point my partner and i decided we were unwilling to risk letting her go under anaesthetic in the stressed out state she had ended up in, so we advised reception and left.
We phoned another local and independent vets practice from the car park and got an appointment for them to see her right away - took her straight there after she had calmed down in the car.
That vet ran full blood tests along with other additional tests he suggested given her age whilst we waited.
Those tests revealed a massively over active thyroid which we were advised the pre surgery blood tests suggested by west mount would not have identified and that putting her under anaesthetic without getting the thyroid under control first would have posed significantly higher risks for her.
We are still being seen by that vet, have returned home with lots of medication that wasn’t even suggested by west mount and we need to get her thyroid under control before proceeding with the dental. We came so very close to having her put under the anaesthetic (literally sat in the waiting room!) as we had trusted the guidance given from west mount and had we proceeded we would have had absolutely no idea of the increased risk we were putting our little lady under!
Since seeing the new vet, i’ve felt much more comfortable and felt like that vet has actually spent time with our cat (we were there about 3 hours in total), he has shown an interest and shown actual care, completed various procedures, which West Mount never even suggested, in order to fully understand what our cats issue actually is and how best to deal with it before just jumping in to dental extraction.
I am so glad we didn’t leave our little old lady with West Mount and put her at the undue risk which we very nearly ended up doing due to following their ‘advice’!!!

American corporation owned veterinary practice!

Beware West Mount Vets are owned by a large American Corporation who are one of the companies buying up vets across the UK and stifling competition. There is currently an investigation into the business practices of these companies.
My cats have been with West Mount for years but I moved them to another local independent veterinarian recently due to the sky rocketing prices at West Mount - the practice manager had the gall to tell me I'd been significantly underpaying for a while??? How is that?.. when I pay the bill I am presented with?
My new practice is between a third/half less expensive for the same treatment.
These American companies are profiteering so support your local independent practices or they'll disappear!

This used to be a great vet

This used to be a great vet - no idea what's happened but over the last year or two standards (along with shorter opening hours) have slipped. I tried to get an appointment for a non emergency (yet painful condition) for my cat, but they couldn't see him for a fortnight. I took him to Hirds where they could see him within 24 hours. While the individual vets are nice, the waiting room is often crowded and waiting times long, leading to more distress for the animals. I just don't feel confident that I can entrust the care of my animals to them anymore. A shame after using their services - for many different pets - for almost three decades. I have moved to Hirds (though it took two phone calls to get West Mount to send records over.) A shame because they are nearer to my home.

Was a user of the Mytholmroyd branch…

Was a user of the Mytholmroyd branch for a few years without any concerns. Then, after an overnight stay for treatment, my dog went from being happy visiting the vet to being absolutely terrified to walk into the waiting area. We never ascertained the reason for that, I think he’d been traumatised by something while in there. Then I started to get hacked off with waiting times when at the surgery. After being contacted by them reminding me the annual vaccinations were due, I rang to arrange an appointment only to be told the vaccine wasn’t currently available an the next available appointment for this was 2-3 weeks away. I was given an appointment time and turned up five minutes before. My dog and I were the only ones in the waiting area. An hour passed with nobody else attending after us, my dog clearly traumatised about being there. Not a word of explanation from the reception staff as to the reason for the delay. (I now suspect there wasn’t even a vet on the premises.)
I got up and walked out, got in my car a from there made a phone call and registered my dog with a far more reputable vet in Halifax, you may have Hird of them!

There wasn’t even a follow-up call from West Mount Vet asking why I’d walked out & not kept the appointment. They had to be asked twice to transfer my dog’s records to his new vet.

I wouldn’t recommend West Mount to anyone.

we used to use there Todmorden branch…

we used to use there Todmorden branch until when we had to have our nearly 20 year old dog put to sleep they made a mistake and sent her for cremation with many other animals despite us paying for cremation with return of ashes, yes they did refund us but that is not the point, also a friend of ours had an emergency with her dog, and because of her appearance (hippy looking) they would not treat an injured dog straight away, saying well how are you going to pay (she was a well paid person just didn't show it), it seems this vets is no longer about the animal welfare just money, and most recently they have helped remove a well loved (13 year old) dog from someone i know and accused him of neglect, this man has cared for animals all the the i have known him, he has been a 20+ year contributor to the rspca and would put an animals welfare before most human beings, glad I don't have to deal with them any longer

Power hungry and no compassion

Awful practice with no compassion for the animals under their care. Charges extortionate amounts, and profits on families who are already distressed with ill pets. Consider elsewhere for great service at a reasonable cost, not this practitioner.

Having looked at previous reviews of a similar nature before this incident I am led to believe that you have no compassion for the animals under your care. A full complaint will be made to the Royal College of Vetinary Surgeons as I believe this practice is not fit for purpose.

Disgraceful practice

Disgraceful practice. Shamefully coluded with Police and RSPCA to remove a frail, elderly, much loved and cared for dog from it's heartbroken family causing her last few weeks of life to be spent alone in a vet's cage instead of with her loving family.
Shame on all involved.

Seek a better vet.

Removed a well looked after dog from a loving household in what can only be described as a show of power.
Much nicer vets available.

If I could give a zero I would

If I could give a zero I would. Advised the RSPCA to remove an elderly dog from her loving owner as she was underweight , despite the fact the dog was under the care of another vet. Two weeks they had her and in their care, deteriorated further to the point the kindest things to do was to let her go. So rather spending the last moments of her life with her loving family at home , she was subjected to the power trip of this awful vet. Stay well clear. Money grabbing joke of a place with no compassion and no real love of the animals.

A marked decline in Standards

I have been a customer of this practice for nearly 4 years - 3 of them I could not fault the levels of service or care - this past year standards have fallen so much that I no longer have any confidence in them to look after my pets healthcare and would give them a no star review if this was at all possible.

I tried to raise my concerns with the practice manager this morning but was told they were on holiday and to send my issues in via an email - that's how concerned they are about customer care or feedback.

Issues I have experienced in the past year , the inability to support an extremely nervous dog - (no worries with this for 3 years) but for the last year I have experienced problems with annual health check, booster vaccinations - a request not actioned, change of medication without consultation, and finally an appointment with a vet who had an injury to their which meant they could not lift or hold the dog while checking her over - would have been an problem if my dog had been bigger or I had been frailer.

I have now taken the decision after trying to discuss my concerns this morning without success to leave this practice and seek care for my pet elsewhere.

I have now left this practice

I have now left this practice, I used this practice previously with my other dog and at the time I couldn't fault the service, hence my return.

The practice has changed, you pay for a service, and overpay, I cancelled the happy pet club due to me leaving the practice and they hammered me with costs, including removing the discount they applied for any treatment. (potentially i had previously paid for in the monthly payments), I don't know what I paid for as they didn't even give me a breakdown of costs, I did however receive an invoice for a consultation, this is interesting, a breakdown of a consultation meeting which included - teeth - claw cutting and something else - this was not completed at the time by the vet so why are they incorporating charges in to the their consultation fee and not applying what they are charging customers for.

Another item appearing on the invoice is a cost for flea tables (which was covered on the health pet club) so why am i paying for these, they generously reduced them by 10% and applied the happy pet club discount!!!!!! What are you doing???

Anyway, I paid to leave this practice (which I am still not sure what they have charged me for they just came up with a sum) and then also was informed that I have to pay another month subscription for the happy pet club and that is just for the pleasure of leaving them.

Like I said, I am glad I have left them, it's actually a relief, the stress of having to take your pet there, the "care" is not worth the money.

Sad really, like I said it used to be a practice that actually cared about your pets, now they just care about what they are charging you.

On the date of September 22, 2023, I brought my Bedlington Terrier, Bonnie, for a consultation with Dr. Ed Rowe at the above clinic. The purpose of the consultation was a pregnancy scan and an apparent infection. It is in this context that my concerns arise.

My primary issue pertains to the fees charged for the services provided. Specifically, I was billed £170.09 for the pregnancy scan and £55.02 for 40 x Synulux tablets (50mg). A quick comparison with online veterinary pharmacies revealed that the same quantity of Synulux tablets can be obtained with a prescription for a considerably lower cost of £15.60.

Additionally, my research into the local market rates for pregnancy scans in this area indicates that their charges of £170.09 are nearly three times higher than those of three other local veterinary practices, whose fees range between £60 and £68.50, VAT inclusive. While I understand that veterinary fees can vary, I believe it is essential for a veterinary practice to be transparent about its charges, especially when they significantly exceed the local market rates.

At the time of seeking veterinary care, pet owners are often emotionally distressed and anxious about their beloved animals' health. In such vulnerable moments, it is incumbent upon veterinarians to communicate potential costs up front, providing clients with the information they need to make informed decisions. The lack of transparency in this regard has left me feeling concerned and disappointed.

I respectfully requested that they consider offering a partial refund that would align the charges with the local market rates. Additionally, I suggested that the practice prominently display its basic fee structure, providing clients with a clear understanding of their pricing policies.

During my communication with Sarah, one of their staff members, I expressed my concern about the substantial difference in scan fees. Regrettably, her response was not empathetic; instead, she advised me to seek services at a cheaper veterinary clinic. Following her advice, I chose to transfer Bonnie's medical records to another veterinary practice in Sowerby Bridge by the train station. I can't name on the practice here. Their charges are considerably lower and reputation much higher.

I have submitted a formal customer complaint, and I have received acknowledgment of its receipt. I am currently awaiting the results of their internal investigation. I will provide an update to this review as soon as I receive their response.
------------------
I received a response from the practice manager on 25/10/23. They acknowledge the substance of my complaint and gave me a part refund to bring the cost more in line with the local vet rates.
She also promised to reiterate to the Vets and Veterinary staff the importance of communicating costs to clients.
My suggestion of a displayed price list for all common treatments received no response.
I have since found a more open and transparent Vet practice and moved to them.
