When Premium Promises Fall Flat
Customer Complaint: Africa Trip (6–22 September 2025)
This report outlines concerns regarding the safari trip for two guests, arranged by Tammy Moir, Senior Safari Designer at Wild Frontiers (Pty) Ltd.
Arrival and Initial Transfer
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, the transfer vehicle provided was in poor condition, with a non-functioning air conditioner and broken fittings. Given the extensive road construction and heat, the journey was uncomfortable.
Chanya Lodge
The accommodation at Chanya Lodge did not meet expectations. Despite requesting twin beds, only a queen bed was provided initially, and an upgraded room was offered only after repeated requests at an additional charge of $138. The first room was in poor condition, with minimal amenities and safety concerns due to frayed mats. Food quality was low, and service at reception was unhelpful and inconsistent.
Safari Vehicle and Transfers
The safari vehicle supplied for the first ten days was old and lacked air conditioning, contradicting the “custom-built comfort” description in the itinerary. After complaints, a replacement vehicle was provided the following day, though it also showed signs of wear. Boxed lunches provided during travel were substandard compared to other guests’ meals, and travel times between lodges were lengthy and uncomfortable due to poor road conditions.
Lodge Experiences
Tarangire Safari Lodge: Adequate accommodation, though vehicle discomfort persisted.
Lake Manyara Safari Lodge: Acceptable lodging, but travel between destinations was long and fatiguing.
Ngorongoro Serena Lodge: Good accommodation and amenities, though travel by air would have been preferable.
Serengeti Wilderness Camps (Central & Northern): Extremely poor conditions, including cramped tents, bedbug infestations, inadequate hygiene, and unsafe drinking water. Guests experienced health issues, including diarrhoea. These facilities were well below the expected standard for the price paid and inconsistent with previous safari experiences.
Rwanda Extension
The Rwandan leg of the trip was satisfactory. Hotel des Mille Collines and Tiloreza Lodge offered good service and accommodation. The gorilla and golden monkey treks were excellent. However, the extended wait at the airport before departure was inconvenient.
Overall Assessment
The quality of accommodations and vehicles during the Tanzanian portion of the trip did not align with the premium cost of approximately $15,000 per person. Planning oversights, including the omission of key sites such as Olduvai Gorge, further detracted from the experience.
Requested Resolution
A partial refund is requested for:
The Chanya Lodge stay and associated room upgrade charge.
The five nights at the Serengeti Wilderness Camps due to substandard and unsanitary conditions.
