Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 43 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Consumers frequently complained about poor customer support, mentioning unhelpful representatives, long wait times, and persistent difficulties resolving basic account issues. Many individuals also experienced frustrating payment problems, unexpected account closures, and complicated loan processes that completely lacked proper communication and transparency from the financial institution. The minority of people were satisfied with the professional loan officers and helpful support staff assisting them through the home buying process. Some reviewers also noted competitive interest rates on certificates of deposit and appreciated having access to specific banking accounts without dealing with excessive monthly fees.

Poor Communication with potential New Customers

I submitted an application for a High Yield Savings Account (HYSA), but there was a typo in my birthdate. I called the bank to inquire about the status, as I had not received any communication regarding approval or disapproval. After making a second call, the operator indicated that a manual review was necessary. By the 18th day, I still had not received a response. When I called again, I was informed that the account had been disapproved. However, they did not follow up with an email or a call to communicate the final decision.

Alliant failure redeemed

UPDATE: My funds were released and my home is safe. I appreciate it being taken care of timely, but the anxiety of it all was absolutely unnecessary.
*****
I’ve been with Alliant CU for several years and have deposited thousands of dollars there. Never have I ever done a mobile deposit. The process is a nightmare for 3rd party checks but my USAA account has never had this issue and never was I told by Alliant that 3rd party checks aren’t accepted. So they shutdown my account and no one called or emailed me. So I called and thought everything was sorted just to find they added time to my funds to be released. A total of 9 days for a process that per the company should take 3-7. Well now my mortgage will be late and I’ll be at risk of losing my home. They told me the funds would be available next day and now all of a sudden no one can help me. Scammers and liars for sure. Preying on disabled vets should be a crime!

Too much AI-BOT

I sent 25usd to open an account yesterday and quickly realized this place is a mess. At 9am on 04 Feb 2026 I finished a call after finally finding a human being to speak with after many many attempts to go through endless AI Bots etc. An agent with pronoun of Karen told me that maybe it would be better to call back after I has calmed down. What? I asked her to send me an email to my registered email account and finally talked her into it. I could feel the anger.

Update: I called back just now and spoke with someone who canceled the account and he indicated that she had LIED TO ME. We are not allowed to send emails out to anyone. Now the 25 $ will be refunded to the original account the practical way, but they also added a 5$ hold, which believe it or not will be mailed as a paper check to my home address. That is 16% of 5usd, how crazy can we get now?

Customer service is non existant

I applied for a savings account with Alliant in order to take advantage of their higher interest rates however they turned down my application saying they couldn't verify my identity. I find this strange as I have a high credit rating and about 60 years of banking history. Their agents were hard to communicate with and very slow to get back to me. But there are other banks and credit unions who would like to have me as a customer so I'll give up and move on.

Don't Deal with this Credit Union

I opened a cd on 1/13/26 & was told that the funds would be debited from my external checking by 1/16. On 1/16 this did not happen so I called and was told that they would contact the back office & would be contacted by email. I received the email that said I needed to give my phone #. I am sure that the original application included my phone # but even if that is true why did it take my phone call before I found out what was going on. The whole process was handled badly and I eventually canceled the application. I lost 3 days interest on $100,000. I should have read the reviews before I invested w/ them.

Stay away from this bank

My loan was transferred to this bank. Initially, they lost the loan, so no payments were due or could be made for the first two months. They finally found my loan and, of course, charged interest even though I could not make a payment. I had to contact them several times to ask about removing the interest since the error was on their end. They finally removed the minimum payment interest, even though I am paying several thousand more a month, and showed them that with the other bank. Making payments is awful; they either charge you to do it by phone ($10-$12) or require you to transfer money to the checking account they set up, which I do not want. You also have to wait several days for the transfer to occur before you can use that money. A payment was made recently. The gentleman was nice, but that is the best thing I can say about this so-called bank. I have dealt with several banks for home and business loans over the years. This is the worst bank I have ever used. Unless you like service fees for everything and giving your hard-earned money away, don't use this awful bank.

Bad Followup/ Do not bother using for loans

I put in a Heloc application in October, based on the their promotional rate of 3.99%. Then I followed up in December where Jon advised me that I needed to turn in all my docs or my application would expire and I would need new credit pull and new app completed. I turned in all said docs based on our phone call. Another week goes by no phone and I need to call again to see where we are at. They then asked for more info which I uploaded. Now another week goes by and they say I didn't turn in all the items and now that I need to turn in new stuff and new application. Oh and now no 3.99 rate as they do not offer anymore. Total bait & switch. If I am a loan officer and this is my job to get loans I think you failed! This is very simply poor communication on your part Jon and the ball that was dropped by Mark the origional loan officer assigned.

Alliant Credit Union USED TO be a great…

Alliant Credit Union USED TO be a great bank. In the past few years, its customer service has gone from excellent to dismal. They have outsourced customer service to AI, and as a result, it is nearly impossible for a customer to resolve issues that come up. Even when you get a live person, they just use AI to lie to you. They have removed helpful features from online banking that allowed customers to have agency in managing their accounts. Also, the minute you open a teen checking account for a minor, they start sending them credit card promotions without the parents' consent. We chose Alliant back in the day when choosing a credit union instead of a big bank meant the customer got a fair shake. Alliant no longer values its customers. They want your money so they can invest it, but once your money is in their system, they couldn't care less about you.

Pretty good overall. Rates are now only OK and no Zelle

Have been with Alliant for years without any major issues. Seems like their rates have gotten worse in recent years, and now we need to switch to get something higher. Such a pain. That, and they don't do Zelle, which has made me scramble for cash on a few occasions to pay contractors.

Overall we are happy

Overall we are very pleased with Alliant Credit Union. A recent issue was resolved quickly and to our complete satisfaction. Two reasons this is not a 5 star review… (1) the website can be a bit slow and cumbersome and (2) the recent change to their credit card cash back. For years we have used their credit card for almost everything as it offered 2.5% back on all purchases. In November that was changed to 1.5%. So now we use a different credit card for all purchases. Not a huge deal, but a disappointing change for sure.

Not what it used to be

Definitely has gone downhill. I joined in 2021 and had no problems until recently. Over the last year, the amount of technical difficulties they face almost daily is ridiculous. App constantly down for maintenance or it just won’t load at all outside of that. The very few times I’ve needed to contact customer support, they’ve been rude and unhelpful. They’re also one of like 5 banks in the entire country that don’t use Zelle, which proved to be a massive problem for me. I know they’re switching CEOs, which might be why customers are experiencing so many woes.. but at this point it’s just easier to take all of my money somewhere else. I’d not recommend Alliant to anyone.

Total disaster of a company.

I got a home equity line of credit through this credit union which went well. Then they turned me over to a company called Cenlar for all aspects of my loan. Cenlar is a total disaster and offers no form of customer service. There is no phone number you can call so web chat is the only option. Every time I tried I got Abdul who was clearly cooking dinner or watching a movie because he would disappear for minutes at a time. I will be filing formal complaints on both companies.

This company is completely incompetent…

This company is completely incompetent and filled with people that keep lying to us. They keep trying to take money out of my account. Not the monthly payment but also the full amount of the RV. After a dozen phone calls they keep saying they have fixed the problem. Meanwhile I keep getting hit with insufficient funds and bank so far is reversing the amount.

They are the worst

They are the worst. I applied and was approved 3 times, each time they accused me of not having money and closed my account and each time they sent me back the money i deposited. When we I called to ask they why this keep happening they are so unprofessional and never answer as to why.

Hard pull for no reason - no good!

I have been a customer of Alliant Credit Union for years and have even borrowed money from them in the past. Unfortunately, my most recent experience has been extremely disappointing.

Alliant is not transparent about what their loans can be used for. Nowhere on their website do they clearly list restrictions. You would expect a financial institution to clearly state up front whether commercial or business use is allowed, but instead you only find out after you’ve already gone through the application process.

Even as a longtime member, I was surprised to learn that Alliant does not seem to base their lending decisions on your credit score or history. They use their own internal list of criteria, but they don’t share it, leaving applicants in the dark.

Another major issue is that they will perform a hard credit pull immediately, even before giving you any clarity about eligibility or loan restrictions. This can negatively impact your credit score with no benefit if you end up being denied for reasons that were never disclosed ahead of time.

It is frustrating that, as a loyal customer, I was treated this way. At minimum, Alliant needs to overhaul its website and be upfront about loan restrictions, decision factors, and eligibility criteria. Transparency should be a priority in lending, and unfortunately Alliant Credit Union falls far short of that standard.

INCOMPETENCE - POOR CUSTOMER SVC

Lots of incompetence. Tried to open accounts, checking and savings, in my trust and ACU is abysmal — protocol and customer service around the process. They won’t allow customers to speak directly to the people who handle trust accounts. You play ‘telephone' with the customer rep who answers the phone, KNOWS NOTHING, and emails the people who actually know something. It’s a frustrating time suck! Multiple calls to get nowhere. Nerdwallet recommends ACU, and that’s why I opened an account with them, but I’m now looking for a new credit union. Look at ACU’s Trustpilot rating — Nerdwallet must be paid for their good ACU review. Alliant Credit Union has really poor/uneven customer service! Don’t bank with ACU.

this CU is the WORST they bought my loan and i literally spent two hours and three different reps to try to pay the mortgage. None of them know WTF they were doing... Still have yet to figure out how to pay the mortgage... I'm sure they will charge a late fee for their incompetence. BLOWS my mind after hours of answering security questions they wont take a payment.
