I have been a member of American Home Shield for 8 years. Their service has decreased, and response times have greatly increased in the last few years. They used to take care of things very quickly, and I was quite satisfied. Now they take forever to respond to a need (fixing a dryer took 2 weeks because they wanted to order their own cheaper parts instead of using the contractor's parts), causing a huge delay. We had to ask neighbors and family members if we could wash clothes at their home. Rates go up every year. I have been calling for 2 days to cancel the policy and they disconnect or pass me on to India every time with a guy who wants to argue with me about keeping my service for a slightly reduced fee. It took me over one hour to drop this plan with one of my homes. Not sure what happened to this company, but they have gone downhill. Still not able to cancel my contracts. Extremely deceptive, and I will never use them again.
I will give examples of why you should never use this company They charge a 125 fee for every time they send somebody out they send technicians that don’t know what they’re doing from outside of the Richmond area and do not use local technicians. Example HVAC they sent three different technicians every single one of them had a different outcome end up using my original guy that installed the system fixed it for a couple hundred bucks. They wanted me to replace units and many other things on the system after I had it fixed they would not then cover the unit going forward, cause I did not do what they said was wrong with the unit. Next example washing machine broke down. They sent a technician $125. He fixes it week later same thing happens another $125 same technician. The technician even explained to me that they will keep sending somebody for $125 until it’s the last resort so in many cases you will have covered the cost of a brand new washing machine, which was getting to the point with us so we stopped and bought our own new washing machine that they did not cover. I would do not use this company ever. They do not cover products properly and there’s too many questions and concerns around how they cover things.
Was with them over 19 years when the gas heater went up, installed when I built the house new, the contractor they sent didn't know what the issue was, said I needed an electrician. Blower motor, but more importantly, burn through which made the unit dangerous. Never got anywhere with AHS and had purchase new unit with no help from the warranty. Total rip off. Beware, Beware, Beware.
System seemed streamlined, no going back and forth. Refrigerator is installed and running thank you.
Was real good no problems
I wish I could give American Home Shield ZERO STARS!
I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with American Home Shield’s handling of an urgent plumbing emergency at my home. Our toilet was overflowing, creating a serious sanitation concern and risk of water damage. I immediately contacted AHS and specifically requested expedited emergency service.
Today is Friday, October 23, 2026 — FOUR DAYS after reporting this emergency, and AHS still has not assigned a plumber!
During these four days, I contacted American Home Shield approximately 9–10 times, spending hours on the phone and repeatedly explaining the urgency. Every representative assured me that my request was marked as EXPEDITED.
However, when a plumbing contractor finally contacted me, the earliest appointment available was FIVE DAYS AWAY! Even worse, the contractor informed me that the request was NOT marked as expedited, directly contradicting what AHS representatives repeatedly told me.
To make matters worse, AHS CANCELED my original service request without resolving the problem! They then attempted to create another request while pushing to collect a $125 service fee before even confirming that a plumber was available.
AFTER FOUR DAYS OF WAITING, I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO HIRE SOMEONE MYSELF!
I eventually found someone with the necessary equipment to fix the plumbing problem and paid for the repair out of my own pocket.
Now AHS is refusing to reimburse me because I hired someone without their prior authorization.
My question to American Home Shield is simple: WHAT WAS I SUPPOSED TO DO?
Continue waiting with an overflowing toilet? Allow potential water damage to my home? Keep calling customer service for another four or five days while nobody takes responsibility?
I pay for a home warranty because I expect assistance when something goes wrong. Instead, I experienced four days of delays, repeated assurances that led nowhere, conflicting information, an unresolved service request being canceled, and a refusal to reimburse the emergency repair I was forced to arrange myself.
This is completely unacceptable customer service!
American Home Shield needs to take responsibility for how this emergency was handled, explain why my expedited request was not communicated properly, and reconsider reimbursement for the repair.
I am sharing my experience publicly because other homeowners deserve to know what they may face when they urgently need help.
BEFORE PURCHASING AN AMERICAN HOME SHIELD WARRANTY, PLEASE READ CUSTOMER REVIEWS AND ASK HOW THEY HANDLE REAL EMERGENCIES!
Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend American Home Shield.
FOUR DAYS. 9–10 PHONE CALLS. NO ASSIGNED PLUMBER. I PAID FOR THE REPAIR MYSELF. AND AHS REFUSES TO REIMBURSE ME.
Extremely disappointing!
I have a broken built in microwave that is covered by my AHS contract. I submitted a claim on 9/24/26. After 3 tech visits the microwave is still in the same broken condition.
After 1 month of zero progress, AHS shows no sense of urgency to repair the appliance. They stated today that they must wait for a report from the Technician that could not repair the microwave during today's third repair call.
AHS support is focused on not spending any money to provide services contracted for under their warranty. Rapid repair is not a option.

My experience with American Home Shield has been extremely frustrating. My realtor gifted us with ShieldComplete warranty with 0 days of waiting period and great coverage claims on paper. On October 17 my furnace stopped heating. Their assigned technician diagnosed a faulty gas valve, but AHS denied the repair claim.
The denial was based on pretext of "pre-existing conditions". When I disputed the denial AHS has failed to clearly explain or substantiate with specific contract language.
Their customer service is pretty useless when it comes to actually resolving problems. Representatives provide repetitive responses but take no meaningful action. When you dispute a claim, there is no accountability, no clear communication and no proactive follow-up. Nobody contacts you with a definitive explanation and you are forced to repeatedly call and chase answers.
Escalating a complaint seems to not accomplish anything. Customers should not have to spend hours trying to obtain basic information about a denied claim.
AHS is quick to collect warranty premiums and service fees, but based on my experience, getting them to honor a disputed claim or provide a transparent explanation is an entirely different matter.
I would NOT recommend American Home Shield. A warranty is only as good as the company's willingness to honor its contractual obligations and provide meaningful customer support. So far, AHS has failed to demonstrate either. Not getting my business nor of anyone I know!

Submitted a service request on 10/13, it is 10/23 and it still doesn't have a dispatch. I've called them twice to get no assistance, other than being told it has been escalated. Today, I started with the chat feature, was told that I'd be connect to an Escalation Supervisor only to find out that it could take another day to get a call back from them. This is the worst service I've ever seen from a company that promoted 24-48 hours to get an appointment.

The WORST customer service ever! They will take your money and take your money and when you need them they will NOT help you! I have paid premiums for over 5 years with no claims, once I filed a claim they drag their feet, won’t answer calls, won’t call back and will hang up on you when you try to get help. Tell me there are no managers to talk to for help. You’re on your own. DO NOT TRUST THEM!

I wish I could do NO stars!!! This place is a total scam. I pay my bill every month and pay it on time. Never late, nothing! My oven went out and it was determined that the part was not able to be fixed so I supposedly got a cash offer. It is no where to be found and I have spent the last 3 MONTHS (YES I SAID 3 MONTHS) trying to get someone to help me with this. I get told the same stories over and over, I get sent to various departments, all of which tell me the same thing....that they cannot help me and they need to send me back to the department that transferred me to them in the first place. Some of the representatives have even gone as far as to put me on eternal hold and never come back and/or actually hang up on me because they do not want to help me. ABSOLUTE INSANITY!!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS COMPANY. It is a total scam!!

Svc repairman diagnosed the problem and communicated professionally. It took a little longer (1 week) to get parts, but we were kept informed. Same repairman returned to install which I appreciated.

AHS has the worst customer service if you want to cancel. Their cancelling department is NON RESPONSIVE there is no way to cancel online, there is no way to delete your payment method, there is no way to cancel but by phone, and they leave you on hold for at least half an hour on the cancellation line. I cannot assure it is an intended practice but it is very convenient for them that every other department answers in less than 2 - 3 minutes and cancellations take more than half an hour on hold.

Beware that if someone purchased a plan for you as a gift and then you give you card info to pay for a service visit, AHS will charge YOUR card when the plan renews.
AHS does not comply with Colorado law regarding plan renewal notices.
AHS is a poor value - forcing you to use subpar contractors and replace with inferior products, or to receive a cash payment that is a small fraction of the cost of replacement. AHS will also force you to repeatedly attempt to have an appliance repaired (which forces you to live with a defunct appliance in the interim) when most normal people would move on and get a new one.

AHS worked with us in getting our repair request submitted. We had a preferred contractor and AHS was able to obtain that contractor for us. Communication was smooth and everything worked out well.
