AMSYS & JOHN LEWIS Warranty & Repair Scam!?

My wifes Macbook was sent to Amsys via the John Lewis Repair Centre under the 2 year warranty.

Issue was a faulty screen/display, with a suspected fault being the data/display flex cable that runs from the screen through to the main laptop. This is a very common fault and easily researched and identified.

I took images of the laptop working perfectly through a second monitor via HDMI cable. This allowed me to get my wifes important work data off. The laptop worked perfectly for over 24 hours while connected and extracting the files to a USB Hardrive. It turned on and off and was working normally, just through a different monitor.

Now to the very bad bit...

Amsys claim that the whole thing is water damaged and replacement parts (Quoted for: Replacement Logic board, Touch ID, top case with battery & display assembly) and labour to the value of over £1800.00 is required to fix the laptop.

Its shocking to think that they have diagnosed the fault to be well beyond that of potentially just a replacement screen. The cable itself can be repaired by a competent engineer, its tricky but possible. The easier way it to just disconnect the cable and fit a new screen, which I imagine would be a great deal cheaper that £1800.00.

Suffice to say I have complained to John Lewis and given them the opportunity to take another look at the laptop which they have declined.

We have asked for the laptop to be returned. In what condition its returned is yet to be discovered.

How many occasions is this company misdiagnosing and leaping to the worst case scenario...without running basic tests, diagnostics and common sense problem solving which I managed to do myself.

Pleasant staff quick service

Bit pricy but well worth the sufficiency. Broken screen replaced on the same day welcomed into a lovely store with a fridge full of “free”cans of redbull while waiting to pick up will use again!

Macbook Pro - terrible quality control, attitude and service

Sent Macbook pro with line on the screen in the bottom left. I printed out a photo of it as well as a message begging them not to make me go through 3x attempts like last time in October last year.

Received today, issue still there no explanation, nothing.

Short of me coming over and doing the actual screen replacement I don't know what to do.

This was after I told them on the phone, and loveitcoverit (my insurance company) over emails.

I thought one negative review was going to help them do better, I was wrong.

Terrible quality control AMS463858

Terrible quality control. Sent to them via loveitcoverit for coffee spill. Macbook pro 16 2021 (M1 MAX)
The repair take 2 weeks as they had to wait for TouchID and offered zero visibility unless being chased. They said they are only changing the logic board. When I asked over and over to please make sure the keyboard is alright they ignored me. Now macbook back in my possession and surprise-surprise -> sticky keys on the left side. They won't even acknowledge it's an issue and claim it's functional so good luck. Keyboard backlight is also faded and uneven and anyone who cared would've spotted it. Happy to add photos and videos. Avoid at any cost!

5 stars but they deserve more

If I could give them more stars I would, I had a major issue with my iMac, running slow, Amsys suggested a SSD upgrade. However when it was delivered back it was mis treated by the delivery company causing it damage. iMac was sent back with the company being really apologetic even though it wasn’t their fault. Computer was re assessed and damage was fully repaired to a very high standard and is now running as a “as new” iMac. Cannot recommend them enough. Will definitely use them for any further Apple repairs or upgrades.

Scammers!!

They quoted to replace the logic board and screen, but after repair when I reported to them that the machine is lagging and they collected the machine and damage the screen and blamed me for damaging it, so can’t cover it under warranty. Now I asked them to send me the invoice or proof of parts replacements so I could confirm with Apple but they failed to provide any.

No scam here. We fixed the device first time then addressed the and when you returned it to us it was damaged - hence the fault. The repair could not go ahead as you cancelled your policy with your insurer, who instructed us to return the device unrepaired.

iPhone - Terrible Service

My iPhone XS factory reset itself whilst in my pocket. I have no idea why. The phone only showed 8GB, rather than the 200GB it had before.

I live locally to Amsys and used the Amsys website to ask for an appointment, but I didn't hear back. I did see that you can walk in, so I took my phone to the Kenley office on the 16/08/22.

The employee was pleasant and asked what was wrong with the phone. I explained what had happened and that I wanted the data recovered, as it had important photo's of my father who passed away. He asked if I had backups and I informed him that they didn't work, and needed data recovery.

He took the phone, wrote details, tried to pop out the SIM card, but said the tray was faulty. He packaged it all up and had to send it to their Soho office. It was explained that I would hear soon about what stages my phone was going through and he joked that I would be plagued with text updates with its progress.

I have been extremely stressed about the experience, and was happy that my phone was going to be looked at that week.

I did't hear back for over two months. I hadn't called them as I just didn't want to hear bad news, but I did send a few emails. I never received a reply.
Eventually I called and a lady answered saying that they had emailed me. I hadn't received anything. I asked why they hadn't tried calling me, as it had been so long. In any case, she said that a technician was asking if they could wipe the phone. I said that it was fine, but the reason it was there was because it was already wiped, and I wanted the data recovered! I couldn't believe it. She explained that Amsys don't do data recovery! Wow! Two months wasted, and lots of stress. She said that they would transfer my phone back to Kenley, and she would call me on the Friday to pick it up.

Friday came and went. So did another week. Eventually another lady called me to say it was back in Kenley and I could collect it. I asked if I would be charged for this, and she wasn't sure.

I collected the phone today (10/11/22), and thankfully wasn't charged. I also found that my SIM card popped out on the first try. So, the person inspecting the phone clearly didn't try properly, which would have cost me more money.

All the staff I spoke to were friendly and polite. But, I was let down by being told that they offer data recovery when they don't, and also the appalling lack of communication through their website, emails and call back. I won't be using them again for an iPhone, and judging by all other negative ratings on Trustpilot, their iPhone repairs seem to let the company down. I hope that they see these iPhone reviews and turn their service around in the neear future.

Mystified and Troubled about Amsys's Diagnosis

I bought an iPhone XS from John Lewis. They have a well-known 2 year guarantee for electronic products. The phone's Facial Recognition system failed after the first year. I returned it to JL under its warranty.

JL originally refused to repair it claiming that their ‘approved Apple Authorised Service Partner’ – Amsys - diagnosed the cause of the fault as ‘internal liquid damage – water marks'.

JL offered me a 'repair by exchange' for a whopping £554 (new phone for me, presumably they or Amsys keep my old one) I looked after the phone and knew liquid damage was extremely unlikely (it's even meant to be waterproof!).

I challenged the diagnosis and was sent the wording Amsys used as well as two photos supposedly taken by Amsys that were of the inside of my phone. There were two red circles around the supposed 'liquid damage' marks. I was told this was corrosion. The purple colouring was odd. Independent experts said the photos did not show water/liquid marks.

I had my phone returned and set about my own enquiries. I was told that if I obtained my own evidence, JL could reconsider repairing it - almost like this had happened before.....

An Apple Store's Genius Bar inspected the phone and found no signs of liquid damage. This was not enough for JL!

I took it to another Apple Authorised Repairer which JL did approve of. That AAR also confirmed there was no liquid damage.

Interestingly neither repairer found anything matching the purported photo evidence sent to me of 'liquid damage'. I am awaiting JL's explanation for these photos…the question has been with them for months so far, so I’m guessing there is no easy answer.

On the strength of my own report, JL agreed to take my phone back at the beginning of August and inspect it again using a different Apply Authorised Repairer to Amsys. Without any expression of regret, apology, surprise or enquiry, they then agreed there was no water damage and would repair it via this different Apple Authorised Repairer.

I am chasing JL about the situation. It seems to me that Amsys falsely diagnosed the cause of my phone’s fault and provided fake evidence. I am giving JL a chance to respond – as I give Amsys the chance to respond here – before taking it further.

Had I caved at the outset, what would have happened to my original, impeccably cared for phone..... cheaply repaired and resold perhaps? What is really going on here?

On this evidence, I do not know how Amsys can reasonably be an Apple Authorised Repairer. What I experienced is consistent with a scam.

AVOID!

If I could review without giving any stars, I would.

Apple sent me to them, something I later regretted deeply.
At first they seem nice, but when you get back to them, take your device, you discover that they've completely wiped clean a full back up drive, and denying it ever happened!
I've had to waste my time and money to get what I could back from a back up lab. Still all the files recovered are in a mess, which leaves me with damage that effects me greatly for years to come (as I am a designer with many important files I created now either corrupted, gone or in a complete and utter mess).
Of course nor them or Apple saw anything wrong until I showed them proof.

They're horrible, stubborn, and whoever they sent to deal with my complaint tried to make me feel guilty by personalizing a professional complaint.

Avoid at all costs. It's not worth it.
