Good database but constant hustle drives you mad!

Really dislike constant stream of emails to take add ons.

Ancestry is a brilliant site

Ancestry is a brilliant site. Tad expensive but you get what you pay for. I have expanded my "trees" immensely plus being able to "flesh" it out a bit which makes it more interesting.
A word of caution--try to backup all your findings as people can jump on to your tree with only the whisper of a connection

A complaint.They send a lot of information relating…

They send a lot of information relating to near relatives who I have met, and unnecessary information relating to articles in newspapers which are incorrect as I have personal knowledge or original books and information handed down to me as a direct descendant. It appears they do not have records prior to 1800 to assist me in tracing my direct relatives. I am no interested in relations with distant cousins,as I am only interested in tracing back to direct relatives with the same surname as my father and mother.

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us, Henry! We understand your focus is on direct parental lines rather than extended branches, and we appreciate your perspective on keeping hints relevant to your direct ancestors. You can customize your email notifications in your Account Settings to reduce unwanted updates, and you can also ignore hints for distant relatives or newspaper articles to keep your workspace clean. Additionally, while earlier record coverage varies by region, searching parish registers, probate records, and land collections directly in our Card Catalog can help you trace direct surname lines back past 1800. We're wishing you all the best in your research and hope some of these tips can help!

O'MONGABHAIN

Mungovan is a very unusual Surname. Growing up I knew my grandfather's siblings all went to Buffalo New York. It is interesting to find out what happened to them and the variations in spelling of the name.

Hi Peter! What an amazing piece of family history to uncover! Tracing an uncommon name like Mungovan across the globe—and seeing all those creative spelling variations recorded by census takers over the years—makes the research journey so rewarding. It’s wonderful that Ancestry could help you reconnect with your grandfather’s siblings and piece together their lives in Buffalo!

What did your family do in Tudor times?

The amount of information I have found amount my family is incredible. I have a fully verified tree which stretches back to the War of the Roses in some places - admittedly with quite a lot outside verification but many people, like me, have added the evidence to their tree and now share it with others

A very good set of tools to get you going.

Ancestry provides a very good set of tools to get you going. Be warned, though, that the hints are just that, they do not always belong to your tree . You need to dig deep , sometimes, to get an accurate picture.
One of the most useful resources, where available, is the original Parish Registers. You will sometimes find missing links by going through them page by page ( starting from a known point).

Hi Andrew. This is such a fantastic piece of advice for anyone starting out on their genealogy journey! You nailed a crucial point: Hints are an amazing starting line, but evaluating original records is where real discovery happens. Browsing parish registers page-by-page is easily one of the best ways to bypass transcription errors, spot siblings who were missed, and truly confirm family lines!

An MP ancestor from 650 years ago

I have been researching family history for around 25 years. For most of that time Ancestry has been my main source of information. Recently I identified an ancestor called John Burgoyne born in 1360. He was my 15 times great grandfather. We all have a quarter of a million 15 times great grandparents. So we all have very interesting ancestors. It just needs research, mostly with Ancestry, to find them. John Burgoyne was a lawyer and four times member of parliament for Cambridge - a "knight of the shire", who did legal work for Richard II. Apart from that, thanks to Ancestry DNA, my wife recently found a long lost first cousin living in Sydney Australia. They now regularly correspond

Generally the process of locating ancestors is fairly easily but sometimes the records you need just aren't there. If you hit a brick wall just keep searching, I recently knocked down a 5 year old brick wall

Hi Timothy. Thanks for your recent review. Congratulations on breaking through that 5-year brick wall! Persistence is everything in genealogy, and there is no better feeling than finally finding that missing record after years of searching. Thank you for sharing your success—it's a great reminder to other researchers to keep digging!

Be careful who you share your data with

In my opinion I think Ancestry is the best family tree search site of them all, But it is still full of mistakes probably less than the others but be very careful , check and check again for the facts, send for certificates don't rely on others for data, also if someone has thousands of people on their tree they have just copied from someone else, keep your tree private...

Hi John. Thank you for such a thoughtful review and for sharing your wisdom with the community! You hit the nail on the head: while we strive to provide the best tools and largest database available, true genealogy always comes down to double-checking primary sources, verifying official certificates, and treating online trees as clues rather than absolute facts. Keeping your tree private while you verify your research is a great strategy, and your advice to "check and check again" is something every researcher—beginner or veteran—should live by!

I have used Ancestry in conjunction with Family Tree Maker for many years. The functions perform well, the map does need updating as dies the inbuilt browser. As with all family tree applications, you need to be aware of users adding incorrect data.

Hi Alan. Thank you for being such a long-standing user of both Ancestry and Family Tree Maker! You bring up a vital point that every experienced researcher knows: cross-referencing primary sources is essential when evaluating member-submitted data.

We also hear your feedback regarding the integrated features within Family Tree Maker. Since Family Tree Maker is developed and maintained by Software MacKiev, we work closely with their team to ensure seamless syncing with Ancestry, and we will pass your notes about updating the built-in browser and mapping features directly to their development partners. Thank you for taking the time to share your insights with the community!

Intricate web of historyWe’ve found out things which had…

We’ve found out things which had remained secrets for years and would never normally have found out without Ancestry research tools.
The DNA aspect has also confirmed our link to Ancestors which normally would have been impossible to prove. EG A gg grandmother born out of wedlock , no father on birth certificate, yet my links to others on DNA proved who the father was- incredible. Unfortunately the family links to this story led to historical record of a “rogue” section of our family who were deported to Australia for various crimes.
What an intricate web lies in our history- good , bad and sad.

interesting

prepare for a journey back in time, not everything is a bed of roses, there will be nice things and bad things, so , unless you are prepared for some shocking details, don't dip your toes into the waters; it can be very addictive as you go further back amd families are bigger, like 10 or more children. have fun!

Hi Tony. Thanks for your recent review. You captured the addictive thrill—and the raw reality—of family history research so perfectly! Getting hooked on going back generation by generation is half the fun, but you definitely need a tough stomach for those massive 10+ child households, surprising family secrets, and missing record gaps. Thank you for sharing such a great, realistic warning for fellow researchers; it really is an incredible journey once you dive in!

Used to use Ancestry all the time but year after year the price increases make using it just unsustainable. They have had thousands of pounds off me over the last couple of decades and this years price hike was a step too far. Shop around, there are other equally good sites available for less than half the price!2

Easy to use.

I have used ancestry for a number of years and find it easy to navigate, however there are some collections missing which other companies have. It makes it difficult sometimes to verify information.

Hi Elizabeth. Thank you for being a long-standing member with us and for sharing your honest feedback! We are glad to hear that you find the platform easy to navigate, though we completely understand how frustrating missing record sets can be when you are trying to verify your research

Acquiring, digitizing, and licensing global archives is an ongoing effort, and access to specific historical collections often depends on agreements with individual archives, governments, and repositories. That said, expanding our record coverage and bridging those gaps remains a top priority for our content teams.

We take requests for missing collections very seriously. If there are specific record sets or regional archives you would love to see added to Ancestry, please feel free to share them with us through our online feedback form or customer support. Insights from experienced researchers like you are invaluable in helping us prioritize future record acquisitions!

Ancestry is like one of the family

Ancestry is quick and easy to use and works on the go so wherever I am I can add something new or check-in on one the thousands of people in my trees using my iPhone. That’s why I’ve stayed with it. It’s like one of the family now.
