Anxiety UK was established to promote the relief and rehabilitation of persons living with agoraphobia and associated anxiety disorders, phobias and conditions. Formed in 1970 we have over 50 years’ experience of supporting individuals and organisations. We are a dedicated, friendly and approachable charity that believes that anxiety, stress and anxiety-based depression are treatable and manageable. We offer a range of innovative and high-quality services delivered by professionals; supported by staff and volunteers with personal experience of anxiety, stress, and anxiety-based depression. While we are a charity, we currently receive no public funding from any source and are wholly self-sufficient. and rely on the kindness of fundraisers, donors and the income generated from the provision of our own services to fund the charity. We do provide some free resources, see the link below. We do acknowledge all feedback and do our best to use this to improve our services, we would appreciate kind and compassionate communications. We are a small staff team many of us with personal experience of anxiety and stress related conditions. £40 membership is a waste of money.
£40 membership is a waste of money.
1) the support group, which is the main reason I joined, was closed down without any warning or explanation to the users,
2) the members discussion forum is hardly used, I believe because there is no encouragement from facilitators, which is in my experience is needed to make it successful.
3) If you have therapy, you have to pay for at least 3 sessions in advance and you do not get a refund If you want to stop after the 1st or 2nd one . Or as in my case the therapist decided after 2 sessions that I didn't need it, and i still did'nt get a refund .I believe this to be an unethical practice, which you would not experience if you found a therapist privately. When they advertise the therapy service at reduced rates, they do not mention that you are very likely to see a trainee . I believe this might have been my experience as my therapist decided to end the sessions after two without even doing a proper assessment.
5)There does not seem to be any benefit to being a member as all the information on the website can be found for free elsewhere on the Internet.
6)If you ring up at 9 AM ( which I did this morning) when they are supposed to be open you get an answer phone advertising a new talk service, which they don't mention you have to pay for.
7) I was discouraged from joining the 6 week anxiety management course they run when I read a review that member's anxieties about racism were dismissed as "nonissues".As a member of an ethnic group this is not very appealing to me
8)You have to pay for everything as a member: the support group (when it was running); the talk service; anxiety management groups. Any information and advice you can get for free on the Internet.

More auto renewal problems, avoid.
Sadly agreeing with many other’s experiences on here about auto renewal of membership without warning. Having appealed this within 24hrs of it been taken form my account, I was told it could not be changed but have cancelled the auto renewal for 2025!
For a mental health charity apparently specialising in anxiety they actually create it b it being so unforgiving with their policy.
Imagine you would be hard pushed to find another mental health support charity with such bad reviews. To be avoided.

Had a really good call through the TAUK service
Had a really good call through the TAUK service, best £25 ever spent. The advisor listened to what I wanted to achieve during the call and have now signed up for the anxiety management course.

is this really a charity?
Having paid £40.00 to a so-called charity, I found the website impossible to navigate. All communication had to be done by email, booking a call back to ask for help. I think that to enrol on a course I would have to pay £20.00 (non refundable) to see if that course would be suitable and then, if so, I understand that I would have to pay on a means tested basis. Is this really a charity helping people with mental health issues? It certainly hasn't helped me, just made my anxiety much worse and furthermore, I cannot get a refund because they provide an online service, which is, apparently exempt from the 14 day cooling off period. I feel totally cheated and am actually despairing.

Disappointing
Imagine increasing the prices and calling themselves non-profit organisations, charity…. I have accessed their services few years back, such an amazing experience and accessible prices, my journey was beautiful with the most professional therapist. I was really happy thinking to return and then I checked their website, prices increased, asking to be paying a membership for nothing as there are no benefits, no support groups availability etc. Thinking to rejoin after seeing their website makes me more anxious. Never returning again.

What is the point of this organisation?
Appallingly misleading wording on their website (as of 03/06/2024), making it seem as if all you have to pay in order to access therapy through them is a membership fee and a couple of sessions, when in reality you have to pay for all sessions.
And all of that with the added drawbacks of a) having to wait for 3+ months to start therapy and b) not being able to do your own research and pick a therapist of your choice.
What is the point of this organisation, other than to be a middleman and to delay people from accessing help at the time when they need it the most?
Please do better and stop messing about with people's mental health.

Avoid…
Charges for each of the (few) member services are not stated upfront, and most of what is offered is at extra cost. Annual membership fee of £40 is on auto-renew. This is stated in the T&Cs, but this practice comes across as a money-making exercise. Avoid.

Really
Really.
Let's move past the surface-level anxiety that is often talked about and focus on those who are experiencing real, deeply disabling anxiety that impacts every aspect of their lives. Who is helping them? Anxiety can be trivialized by charities like this one.

Support group
Attended a support group facilitated by Jen who was very good at introducing the meeting and knowing when to step in and make comments/post things on the chat.
Great to have this facility where can talk to fellow anxiety sufferers.

Membership fee is far too expensive
I signed up for membership hoping to get some help for my anxiety. I quickly realised that the £40 membership fee only gives you access to online editions of the magazine and digital resources and discounts. Some of the discounts don't appear to work. If you want to access any therapy or group courses you must pay extra on top of the £40. It is also tricky to cancel membership and it will roll over onto the next year unless your remember to notify AnxietyUK. The books they have for sale on the website can be purchased for a cheaper price from amazon etc. For a charity that is supposed to be looking out for members with anxiety, this charity seems to focus on extracting funds from vulnerable people with mental health issues. I would not recommend. I would also note that some mental health charities charge no membership fee to join or a very reduced amount e.g £6 for Mind membership or no fee for NSUN.

My wife suffers from Anxiety and we looked for help from this charity, the initial call was handled by a very your Girl, no empathy towards the caller, i called the number and got the same person, she stumbled with her words and did not give me any feeling of support and I don't suffer from Anxiety. not good for people who are looking for help with this condition

I volunteered on the helpline for…
I volunteered on the helpline for approximately a year. I received online training following a thorough interview with the helpline coordinator, who explained that recruiting volunteers who had experienced anxiety was essential. I shared the importance of having lived experience of anxiety to empathise effortlessly with callers. Whilst on shift, I felt supported by the small yet proactive and responsive team at every step. I learnt important skills in helping others manage their anxiety and signposting them towards services helpful in addressing the roots causes of their anxiety. I am now an integrative counsellor trainee; I have gained invaluable experience and confidence in guiding callers towards a calm place amid a panic attack. During that year, I also signed up for some of the AUK services to understand better what I might offer to callers. These included Beating the Blues and Anxiety Management Group. Both were valuable. The group gave me much-needed accountability to self-reflect and I found others' experiences insightful. I am very grateful to both the Anxiety Uk team for their support and callers for their openness and trust.
