If you can avoid signing up for AOK

If you can avoid signing up for AOK, please go to ANY OTHER health insurance! Avoid the AOK AT ALL COSTS! I've been a client for more than 30 years and all these decades that I only needed health services that are in the scope of the most basic coverage, I didn't have problems with this health insurance. But after being diagnosed with severe depression and not being able to find a GKV-approved (public health insurance approved) therapist in my area that was able to treat me within less than 3 months, I started the process of applying for the compensation of treatment cost with a therapist in private practice (so called "Kostenerstattungsverfahren") through the AOK

AOK literally did NOTHING to help me continue with therapy and covering the costs. Instead they drilled me through months of bureaucratic work to get all the certificates, doctor approvals and documentation for my month long search for a suitable GKV-approved therapist, because they require you to prove that the Kostenerstattungsverfahren is the only viable option for your treatment and that they should be legally bound to help you out. But even after providing all the paperwork and evidence, that I am severely sick, with my doctor attesting that my treatment should start immediately and a second therapist attesting my treatment should start immediately and with proof that I called close to a dozen of therapists in my area to check that there are no free treatment spaces available for months to come, AOK still to denied me covering the cost for therapy in a private practice. And they did not only deny my application once, but even TWICE. Since I'm at the end of my rope and not having any energy left to sue them (which would be the only available option for me to continue the application process with them and get them to cover my treatment costs potentially), I'll take the way of least resistance by switching to another health insurance provider, only to try applying for Kostenerstattungsverfahren there again

If you are concerned about your health and you'd like to have a health insurance provider that has got your back when things get tough, do not, I repeat, DO NOT sign up with the AOK! Don't waste your time, energy and money on one of the worst health insurance providers that you can currently find in Germany - your health will thank you for it!

The worst Krankenkasse in Germany and beyond

They send fees for late payments which were NEVER late, EXTREMELY bad communication, basically unreachable and impossible to explain THEIR mistakes and they keep such bad track on payment records, leaving people WITHOUT health care benefits due to THEIR bad accounting. The service is too slow and incompetent, literally THE WORST KRANKENKASSE not only in Germany but in the entire world. Would NEVER recommend not even to my worst enemy.

Modern day con artists

Modern-day con artists. They told me I was out of their system as I explained I was no longer employed and moving to self-employed. They said my membership would eventually cancel and I would need to register again before this final date (which is fine). I then got a letter though the post stating that my membership was automatically enrolled onto the highest level of €800 per month. I would not use this company for my own private insurance after being tricked into paying the max fee without being informed in the first place. Avoid and do your research even if it takes you some time.

Never join AOK

I have tried to leave AOK for over two years now and they've always found a way to keep me in their system and refuse to let me change Krankenkasse. They constantly claim not to receive my termination declarations - also when they're sent from my new Krankenkasse TK. Now it finally got through three months ago and they still send me bills for health insurance I don't have. Every time I talk to customer service they tell me they will get back to me which they don't and when I finally hear from them it is with a new bill. It is impossible to leave AOK, the customer service is nonexisting, they refuse to follow the German law and they are ridiculously expensive for freelancers. Never join AOK.
