I had a great experience overall. I sold my car in 28 days (and probably would have sold sooner had I gotten my video up more quickly). I didn't get my initial asking price, but I got what I wanted... See more

I had nothing but scam offers
I had nothing but scam offers. too many to count. Website is basically useless and a waste of time for a private seller.
Lots of scammers out there
Every person who contacted me was trying to scam me. They either wanted me to get a RideVerify report or asked me to text them immediately. I did not have a single legitimate interested buyer contact me.

Placed an ad for $50 and I have receive tons of emails, however they are all scammers trying to get your personal info. It is nothing but frustration as I get 10 a day of scam texts and emais. Advertise your car elsewhere.
15 scams and one buyer that go followed the process
Once I got a buyer that was willing to “play by the rules”, everything went smoothly. Autotrader is a good process when followed and they didn’t miss one thing. Good way to sell a used car.
Prior to this, I had 15 or so potential buyers that wanted contact outside of Autotrader. One went as far as saying the payment was sent. They said they sent more to cover shipping it and I had to pay for it. That’s when I said that this was a scam and stopped communicating with that person. I reported them to the BBB.
Too many scammers. No legit buyers.
I have had a car listed for 2 weeks and of the many people showing interest I’m pretty sure every single one of them is trying to scam me. They immediately es y to take the conversation out of the app. When i tell them i only want to communicate in the app they stop communications. I will never use this service again unless they find someway to vet the identity of buyers. The app itself says to only communicate in the app and never pay for vehicle history based on buyer demands and links and phone numbers they send. The app process an easy way to set up a test drive and make an offer so no reason to go outside the app. If this is how it is it’s really no different than dealing with people on Facebook. There is zero protection from scams.

Absolute worst website to post a used car. Don’t waste your time or money. Posted for a few days and got over 20 scam messages only. Don’t fall for their nonsense.

Easy to understand process for a 1st time seller. Customer service helpdesk was knowledgeable and quick to answer the phone. The only downside were the multiple scam hits in the chat when I first listed, so be very careful!
AUTOTRADER = SCAMMERS & BOTS
DONT!!!!!! WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME!!!!! AUTOTRADER = SCAMMERS + BOTS....I am so disappointed in my experience trying to sell a truck on AUTOTRADER. COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY ..I got tons of responses to my ad but because Autotrader doesnt even try to filter out scammers and Bots all the responses were scammers it was seriously ridiculous in two days I had over 25 messages all were just scammers... BUYER/SELLER BEWARE Autotrader does absolutley nothing to prevent scammers and bots its not even worth your time if they made it free it would still be a waste of time and energy to try and sell a vehicle on here... WHEN I BLOCKED ONE TWO MORE WOULD RESPOND WASTE OF TIME ...AUTOTRADER WONT EVEN RESPOND TO COMPLAINTS ABOUT SCAMMERS YOUR BETTER OFF USING FACEBOOK MARKET PLACE AT LEAST THERE IS SOME SCAMMER PREVENTION IN PLACE!!! It would be so simple with modern AI tools to create a platform that protects the consumer but all they provide is an open door to scammers and bots . I would never ever suggest anyone place an ad with autotrader unless you are actually wanting to get scammed or have your time and monies wasted by nothing but scammers and aibots trying to scam you for your personal information . what a complete waste !!

Site is decent and easy to add your vehicle for sale - but after listing, I only received 1 interested party, every other message was a scam. Autotrader needs to stop scammers.
Warning to Sellers: AutoTrader Scam Leads
My experience trying to sell my used Challenger on AutoTrader was terrible. I paid for a listing and, over the four days my ad was active, I was contacted by numerous people who appeared interested in the vehicle, but every conversation ended the same way: they tried to sell me a vehicle history report. I did not receive any serious buyer inquiries. The platform felt full of scams, not legitimate shoppers.
What made the experience even worse was AutoTrader support acknowledging that these scams are happening and then telling me I should only respond to verified individuals and spend my time blocking and reporting the scammers. I paid for the ad — I should not be doing AutoTrader’s fraud screening for them. If verified individuals are the only people sellers should trust, then why can’t sellers filter to verified contacts only? Better yet, why are non-verified or suspicious accounts allowed to contact sellers at all? Saying that this cannot be controlled is hard to believe.
The whole experience left me questioning how much AutoTrader is really doing to protect paying sellers. When every lead turns into the same scam, it seriously damages trust in the platform. I appreciate that I was eventually refunded the $49 and that my ad was removed, but that does not change how frustrating, unproductive, and unacceptable the experience was.
AutoTrader needs to do a much better job preventing scam inquiries from reaching sellers in the first place instead of pushing that burden onto paying customers.

The experience was smooth inspite of getting multiple scam buyers trying to purchase car reports from malicious websites, all it takes is one good buyer. Overall very happy.

HUGE waste of time and money
This was a HUGE waste of time and money! Every single response to my ad was a scam message, asking for off-site communication via their personal email or text messaging. Not a single valid response to a beautiful vehicle with great photos priced under Blue Book value, which should have sold very quickly and garnered several valid customer responses. Contacting "Customer Service" made the entire experience even worse, because they had no interest in discovering the problem or trying to help resolve it. They were all reading from AI scripts and didn't even respond in a natural way to the discussion. They claim they have technology in place to flag and block scammers and that is a complete and total lie. This is a HORRIBLE business that actually used to be great. AVOID!!!!
100% of contacts were scam attempts - Do not recommend
Did not receive true interest in my vehicle ad. All contacts wanted to move the discussion to text and outside of Auto Trader - which likely were scam contacts. Not one lead interest in my car.

I’m extremely disappointed with my experience on Autotrader. After posting my motorcycle for sale, I was flooded with scam attempts and illegal activity. It felt like every inquiry was a red flag, and I had to filter through countless dubious messages. I won’t be using this platform again, and I strongly advise others to be cautious.
If you are a private seller….dont
If you are a private seller, get ready for numerous scam attempts in the first day. I got 14 scammers in 24 hours. Unfortunately no legit prospects. Not sure the solution, but buyers need vetting.
Just Scammers
Autotrader charged $49 to place an ad for our BMW. We received exclusively scam offers and irritating inquiries that were borderline rude. NOT ONE serious buyer. Don't waste your time. When we contacted customer service to let them know about all the cashier checks and concerning messages we received they brushed us off. I believe that Autotrader is well aware of what goes on on their platform.
Don't list your car on AutoTrader
Every single inquiry on my private car sale was scam related. Either the scammer wanted my phone number, or they insisted I buy a different vehicle report complete with a link to the scam .I'll never use AutoTrader again. Complete waste of time and money! Not ONE legit buyer after weeks of advertising.
20 scam inquiries
I listed my truck yesterday and have received about 20 inquiries. ALL of them are fraudsters. After answering their questions, it's the same story: "I'll send you a cashier's check for the full amount and take possession after the check clears". That is a scam. NO legitimate inquiries. Total waste of time.
