I had a great experience overall. I sold my car in 28 days (and probably would have sold sooner had I gotten my video up more quickly). I didn't get my initial asking price, but I got what I wanted... See more

Private seller here DISAPPOINTED
Private seller here. Auto trader spams you with bots for a few days then low balls you on your car. What a joke. Don’t use Autotrader anymore if you’re a private seller.
AT's private seller exchange has been…
AT's private seller exchange has been fantastic. Specifically the service from the team.
Private Seller Exchange makes for secure and safe transaction.
Autotrader private seller exchange made it easy to sell my vehicle, with checklists explaining each step of the process, and a secure platform to chat with prospective buyers. The only downside was dealing with numerous spam accounts claiming to be interested but trying to lure me into connecting off of the platform. These were easily ignored using the "hide" feature. As a seller, It helped to see if a potential buyer was "ID verified" at the beginning of the process. When I had an offer from a legit buyer, it was easy for me to communicate, and following through with the sale felt more secure, knowing that the buyer had paid up front to Auto Trader. A rep called me to confirm after I had accepted the offer, and explained the next steps when the payment was confirmed on their end. Overall, I got a much better price for my car, and the $100 selling fee for using the platform was very reasonable.

I had never sold a vehicle privately or put an add for a private vehicle. Autotrader made it super easy and my vehicle sold in less then a month and was able to get the price that I wanted for the vehicle.
Absolutely full of scammers..
Absolutely full of scammers... Autotrader says they "take these things seriously" but symptoms don't happen without a root cause. You spend $49 expecting a professional experience with a company that has a big presence. The customer support felt like it was part of the scam with how little they want to do anything about it. They put all the ownership on the seller to manage these fake buyers... SO BAD!
You get nothing but spam messages!
You get nothing but spam messages that waste your time. It’s also a complete waste of money. Do not recommend. Facebook marketplace is free and you get to talk to real buyers. If you list as a private seller. Be very prepared to get unending spam messages. Don’t waste your time or money.
Auto Trader is a Useless Waste of Time
Used Auto Trader a long time ago so thought I would try again. This was a total waste of time. I listed my Jeep this morning and within a few hours had already dealt with 4 scam inquiries. They charge you to place and ad and then try to upsell you to their Private Seller Exchange service. The cynic in me wonders if the scam inquiries are AI and designed to motivate use of their service. Asked for a refund and was told they do not do that but that they would refund 40% as a courtesy.

Good experience because when your a private seller you need the protections that Private Seller Exchange provides. My only recommendation would be to explain to buyer that the will be driving away from the transfer with no tag on the car.
Listed my car as a private seller
Listed my car as a private seller, there are an incredible number of scammers/ bots, makes it very difficult to determine who is an actual potential buyer, causes a lot of wasted time. Also website is very clunky on an iPhone, e.g. navigating through messages.
Structured process for buyer and sellers
Its structured process the puts their services in between the buyer and seller. They manage the process to include communication, offers, finance (if needed) and associated paperwork. This process reduces stress for all parties involved.
First time I’ve used it but would do it again in a heartbeat. The cost involved is a small percentage of the final sales price and a cost effective solution.
Platform is horrible in all ways - Waste of Money
Platform is horrible in all ways-
I have received one low ball offer 8k lower than offer price, one message from a dealership that may be scam, and 15+ spam/scam messages. It's worse than marketplace on here. Just constantly trying to get you to buy something, or a robot with a mass message to get you to text or call off the platform.
Platform from the seller side is also abysmal. Barely navigable and insanely glitchy whether on the website on a computer, on website on a phone, or the app. It's actually the worst integration I've seen in recent years. Must not have been updated at all in the last 5-10 years or have no support any more.
Waste of money, big regret.
second vehicle I’ve sold… great buyers and experience
This is the second vehicle I’ve sold via the private seller portal. The service takes the stress out of the transaction, safeguarding seller and buyer. Also thank you for deleting bots, who try to contact you. Autotrader do a great job blocking those accounts. Always look for verified users who need to upload identity as authentic potential buyers
A Complete Waste of Money and Time
A Complete Waste of Money and Time
My experience with AutoTrader was extremely disappointing from beginning to end.
I listed my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport and paid $29.99 for the listing plus an additional $15 for the Spotlight feature, expecting to reach qualified buyers. Instead, I received 32 scam inquiries and not a single genuine buyer through AutoTrader.
Most of the scammers followed the same pattern:
Asking for my home address under the excuse of mailing me a check.
Trying to convince me to purchase a third-party vehicle history report.
Asking me to continue the conversation through text messages or personal email rather than communicating through the platform.
Ironically, I found several legitimate buyers on Facebook Marketplace, where I encountered virtually no scammers and ultimately had success—without paying any listing fees.
The account login experience was equally frustrating. AutoTrader guided me to create an account using third-party sign-in options such as Google, Facebook, or Apple on my laptop, yet I repeatedly could not access the same account from my phone. There was no clear option to reset or change my password, leaving me locked out whenever I tried to use a different device.
For identity verification, AutoTrader required highly sensitive personal information, including my driver's license, Social Security number, and bank account information. After providing all of that, I expected meaningful buyer verification and effective scam prevention. Instead, I was left dealing with dozens of scammers, making the entire verification process seem pointless.
What frustrated me the most was AutoTrader's constant emails and pop-up notifications urging me to accept an instant cash offer worth only 30–40% of my car's market value. My vehicle was worth over $13,000, yet AutoTrader repeatedly promoted offers in the $5,001–$6,500 range.
Those repeated low-ball offers had a real psychological impact. They made me question whether my asking price was reasonable, discouraged me from continuing to market my vehicle, and even made me feel guilty for pricing it fairly. The repeated messages gave the impression that my vehicle was worth far less than its actual market value and pushed me to lower my asking price. In reality, after listing elsewhere, I attracted multiple serious buyers willing to pay close to my asking price. Rather than helping me maximize the value of my vehicle, AutoTrader's repeated low-ball offers undermined my confidence as a seller.
Overall, I paid for a premium listing, dealt almost exclusively with scammers, struggled with account access, submitted highly sensitive personal information, and received no meaningful value in return.
Based on my experience, I do not recommend AutoTrader to anyone selling a vehicle.
Autotrader and their Private Seller Exchange are terrific!
Autotrader is great for providing the Private Seller Exchange Service. It was the first time both the seller and I had used it. They took care of everything and now I have my car which I'm very pleased with. The seller was honest and very accomadating and PSE was very efficient. It's sometimes hard to trust dealerships but I definitely trust PSP. I'll be back in the future.

The process was simple and easy and the seller was accommodating. There wasn't a whole lot of back and forth and the car looked just like the images.
Great Buying Experience with Autotrader
The ease of finding a vehicle in my price range and being able to stay contacted with my seller to collaborate on a meeting time. I’d say if you guys could add a cleaning service package to the total price for the vehicle that would totally help us buyers. Customer service was a breeze to get in contact with. Thank you so much :))
Autotrader has no strategies for serious buyers
Unfortunately, only people with bad intentions write to me, and I don't have time for that. I haven't had a single serious buyer contact me in the few days I've been doing this. I think you should change your strategy so that honest people like me have a chance to find other honest people.
To list the car, they asked for all my documents: driver's license, photos of the car title, references, social security card (if I'm a citizen), etc. Why don't they do the same for people who want to buy? For me, if this website doesn't change its sales strategy, it's a waste of time and an opportunity to be scammed.
Jaime Mejia ( seriously seller )
Excellent all around
Honestly the safest way for me to purchase a vehicle through a private seller. They were thorough, efficient and on top of everything. It made my entire car buying experience so much easier. They provided updates and made me feel secure moving forward. Great customer service!! Thank you!!

I received quite a few responses on my car that I paid $49.00 to advertise on Autotrader but unfortunately every single one were from Scammers that were SO obvious. I finally got frustrated enough to just take the ad down. I found this platform to be useless to sell private and that Autotrader does not do enough to filter out these scammers.

The entire process was simple and quick. Less than 24 hours from the time the seller and I agreed on a price to the time I drove off in the car.
