I had a great experience overall. I sold my car in 28 days (and probably would have sold sooner had I gotten my video up more quickly). I didn't get my initial asking price, but I got what I wanted... See more

the transparency in the process and the continual communications between buyer and seller and AT was very important. knowing where everything stood through the process was a winning recipe

Skeptical at first but it was such a nice and easy process. Private seller was a cool kid just looking to unload a car he doesn't drive. No dealership shenanigans either, auto trader did my registration & title for what the dmv charges. Awesome 😎
Easy process - both buyer and seller saved a TON of money!
If people knew how seemless Autotrader is, everyone would use it! This was so easy. Autotrader handled the money so that there was no chance of fraud. My buyer got a low mileage car in excellent shape for thousands less than a dealer would charge and I got a lot more for the car than the dealer offered. There were a few potential scammers but Autotrader filtered them out quickly (don't go off platform).
Second time using AutoTrader to buy from private seller
This is the second time I've bought a car through Autotrader. I have found such great deals and vehicles from private sellers over dealerships. I don't think I will ever go back to a dealership. Auto trader helps take care of everything--payment, exchange of money, keys, vehicle, providing you the title/documentation, etc.

Vann was just as it was advertised and the seller was outstanding. He was willing to work with me based on some unorthodox concerns. I had knee surgery so I was unable to go myself to pick up the van, but I had my Mechanic go down, view it and test it out and everything worked out great. Andrew was so willing to do things my way and very accommodating. This is my second experience using private seller, and I would certainly would never have a problem using it again or recommending it to someone else.
As a private seller just don't bother.
As a private seller just don't bother.
Had an Aygo to sell. Autotrader fishes you in with a good "valuation" but that's what dealerships are selling for, not the likes of you or I. You wont ever get near that much because dealers offer limited warranties. Private is sold as seen and people fear a lemon.
Spent 80quid for the unlimited advert time and even after 3 bloody months and being 500 under the projected value I only got 3 calls and 2 emails from time wasters.
Ad listing did not go live
Ad listing did not go live. No response in request to refund ad promotion fee. Completed the process with creating ad, uploading pictures and opting to pay for ad promotion of $50.00. At very last step to enable ad to go live "Buyer and seller safety is AutoTrader's highest priority. Your listing is still being reviewed to make sure it fulfills our trust criteria. In exceptional cases, this can take up to 24 hours" Initially, waited 24 hours and ad did not go live. No response from customer service to enable ad. After two days with no response, I was disappointed credit card was charged, ad was not live and the "paid" boost was counting down. At this point requested a full refund of the paid ad boost, since ad was not live but we have now counted down and almost at zero days with ad never going live. It took a total of 6 weeks before customer service reached out and they did eventually refund the paid service that was never in use.
Overall a solid experience
I was surprised how many inquiries I received that felt off, and violated the platform's policies. With patience, the right buyer came along. Finalizing the purchase wasn't as straightforward as it sounded, and the customer support team was very helpful in sorting through and guiding both the buyer and myself. It sure was easier than financial transactions at a dealership, plus I appreciate the peace of mind as a seller the PSE offers.
They made it super easy
They made it super easy, & protected me against fraud. there private seller exchange is the best way to sell a auto on your own.
As a seller
As a seller, Autotrader is completely overrun by scammers and bots. Don’t waste your time and money trying to sell your car on this site. All you’ll do is receive scam messages. Autotrader Customer Service response is pretty much “oh well”
My experience was very painless
My experience was very painless. I saw the car that I wanted, emailed the seller requesting a test drive, which was scheduled later that same day. I drove it, and told her I would buy it. Went home and purchased it through the platform, and within a few hours I had temporary registration tags, and the car is now mine!
Complete waste trying to sell a car
Complete waste trying to sell a car through Autotrader. Received only scammer inquiries, nothing legit. Then autotrader sends a message with a low-ball offer $10k less than asking price. The Private Seller Exchange is a total sham. You pay $49 for a listing only to spend your time blocking and reporting scammers. Autotrader promises "verified" buyers but it's all a hoax.

Bought a car on auto trade private exchange.Would never ever do that again car was delivered from Georgia.Car was delivered dead battery engine light on had to get towed to the dealer now they are telling me the eco I s bad.Horrible experience.10 k down the drain plus the shipping costs.Trust me I get it Don't buy a car without being the car!!!!!
Scammer paradise
I have been contacted several by “buyers”. Every single one a scammer. They have no control of their private seller section. Do not waste your money listing on this site.

After going through about 6 scammers I got a decent offer from a legitimate out of state buyer. And the deal closed pretty easily without a problem. Customer service is very good. I would suggest not to let anyone contact a seller unless they are a verified buyer, or find a way to weed out these scamming bastards, thank you
Autotrader took the stress out of…
Autotrader took the stress out of selling our Corvette as our first attempt would have been a $46,000 SCAM. Do not sell your vehicle by yourself even when you get a cashiers Check in hand for more than your asking price! Let Autotrader verify your buyer or seller!!
Very Secure, well organized program. Well worth the expense.
Very professional. They anticipated all my questions and concerns as a seller. Sold in six weeks at a good price. Two comments:
- Autotraders numerous unsolicited offers at less than half my asking price were, at first, amusing than became an insult.
- Pay attention to Autotraders advice... Keep communication with prospective buyers on the the Autotraders App. I had numerous, clearly fake, messages asking to communicate via phone or email.
Security & Accessibility to Buyers
Security and accessibility are very important when selling a used car to private parties. Even though a lot of inquiries were made by bots/trolls, we had enough legitimate interested buyers who understood the value of engaging through a secure platform. We wouldn't sell a car any other way!
Not friendly for private sellers
Not friendly for private sellers. This site is nothing more than a marketing trap, you will have dealer after dealer call you with low ball offers. I sold my Jeep on a different platform and I'll never spend a dime on autotrader again. They just want to sell their services and have your vehicle online with them to generate more leads to their dealer networks. They won't even give you the option to list your own phone number so buyers can call or text you. Unless the radically change this site to make it more attractive to private sellers I'll never advertise here again.
