Worst service!

One of the worst service experiences we have ever had. When we arrived, there was no one at the desk. After a long wait, an Avis employee finally showed up and informed us that the car we had reserved was no longer available, as it had been given to another customer. We were offered an “equivalent” vehicle instead. We were then quoted €900 for a full comprehensive insurance package for 10 days. When we asked to extend the rental to 13 days and pay upfront, the employee agreed. He consulted a colleague, charged us €1,438.72, and attempted to update the system. However, he claimed the system would not allow him to modify the rental period to 13 days (allegedly because it was not a working day). He assured us that the additional 3 days had been added under “extras” and that we simply needed to call the helpline on Monday to update the contract. We explicitly reconfirmed that this payment covered 13 days, and he confirmed that it did. Relying on this information, we signed a contract that still stated 10 days. When we proceeded to collect the car, we asked another staff member to update the rental period. After checking internally, they insisted that our payment only covered 10 days because that is what was stated in the contract. Despite repeatedly explaining the prior arrangement and the additional charges applied under “extras,” they refused to acknowledge it. As a result, we were effectively overcharged by approximately €300. To make matters worse, we were again told that the replacement car assigned to us was not available as it was parked at another terminal, and we were given yet another “equivalent” vehicle. This car had a cracked windshield and was not provided with a full fuel tank. Luckily we had taken photographs on the day we took the car otherwise the Avis employee was pinning it on us. What should have been a straightforward rental turned into an unnecessarily stressful and time-consuming ordeal. We spent nearly four hours at the airport dealing with errors, miscommunication, and a complete lack of accountability from Avis staff. This experience reflects extremely poor service, lack of transparency, and unprofessional conduct. Europe Car and Enterprise have proven to be far superior on all counts.

As an Avis Preferred member-Beware Upcharges at Orlando

As an Avis Preferred member, I was disappointed with my initial experience at Orlando International Airport. Instead of being directed to the Avis Preferred garage, I was sent to the terminal counter where a representative aggressively pushed prepaid toll and fuel options, claiming there were extensive toll roads in the area.
We were traveling to Cocoa Beach and back — minimal toll exposure — but that detail was ignored. The interaction felt rushed and sales‑focused, especially given how tired we were after an early flight.
The experience was completely redeemed at the Avis Preferred desk. Even though I ended up in the wrong garage, he took the time to help, reviewed everything carefully, and confirmed the add‑ons were unnecessary. He saved us nearly $200 and restored my confidence in Avis.
Great employee. Poor process upfront.

Avis sent me a notification for a parking violation fee. I had rented the car in Virginia for four days, and never left the area. They fined me $157.00 for a parking violation in the Bronx on my first rental day, which is an absolute scam. I have disputed the claim, so far without resolution. What is wrong with this company?

I made reservation on line to rent a car from Houston Hobby Airport for April 17, 2026 with arrival time after 12:00 AM. At 12:20, waiting for the Avis shuttle, no shuttle available. Call the Avis Number713-641-9300, after few tries, talked to someone, person told us shuttle will be in 15 to 20 min. Waited until shuttle showed up. Drivers comes out the shuttle and told everyone that there is no vehicle in the parking lot. Paid to Uber to go to the destination. I talked to Customer server supervisor and answer I got is reservation does not mean Avis will have vehicle available. If Avis is not honoring the reservation then whey they allow to make reservation. ???
I will Never make a reservation for AVIS again.

You as a rental company need to do…

You as a rental company need to do better. Having only 2 employees on a Saturday to check out rentals with a long line of customers is ridiculous. When there are 8 registers available. Along with not training them on how to read a gas gage. A Customer service representative telling callers you have a policy the gas has to be filled within 5 miles of airport is not acceptable either then turning it around to a courtesy of 50% back on scam charge. ARE U KIDDING ME? I gave you 23 more miles when i returned it in gas, took out 377 miles/ returned with 400. Do the math man. And your airport employees having personal conversations while customers are needing direction on where to drive return to, and getting an attitude like we interrupted them. DO BETTER AVIS!!!!

Worse car hire experience ever

No one came out to check the vehicle when I picked it up and they then charged me for a chip on the alloy that looked as though it had been there for a long time. A complete rip off. They also charged for fuel even though I returned it full. I will nit be using Avis again and will recommend that my friends and staff don't use them either.

Got to Dallas early avis would not give…

Got to Dallas early avis would not give me a car till 12noon without charging me double the price poor customer service I would return car on Monday at 4 ambit I won't get any money back poor customer service any other rental car service would have gave car adjusted time not avis no problem in st louis but Dallas is terrible will not be renting a vehicle from avis again

Avoid this company at all cost

Avoid this company at all cost. wife and i rented a car for a day, a week after we returned it we got a bill for a cracked windshield and cleaning do to smoking in the car. well neither of us smoke and the windshield wasn't cracked when we returned it. yet I have a bill for $900 for that. tried calling many times and told to go pound sand. they can #### ### with there scammy business practices and upon further investigation I found this is their normal business practices with many complaints of the same. wife and I both rent multiple times a month for work and my company has 500 employees that rent daily. they just lost a ton of money. $800 today will cost them tens of thousands over the next year alone.

Very disappointing experience with AVIS…

Very disappointing experience with AVIS at Zurich Airport.

I booked a van for March 9th (Booking Ref: 0870-9192-ES-2) and specifically paid in advance for two child safety seats, which were confirmed during the reservation process. However, when I arrived to collect the vehicle, I was told that no child seats were available.

Instead, they gave me two booster seats, which were completely unsuitable and did not provide the level of safety required for young children. This was extremely frustrating and unacceptable, especially as these seats had already been paid for.

If I had been informed in advance that the child safety seats would not be available, I would have cancelled the booking and rented elsewhere. No one contacted me beforehand.

When I tried to complain at the office, the staff offered no help at all.

Because of this, we were unable to travel safely or make longer journeys during our trip, which seriously affected our holiday plans.

Charging customers for equipment that is not provided, especially when it concerns child safety, is unacceptable. I expected much better service from an international company like AVIS.

Went to pick up car we sceduled to rent…

Went to pick up car we sceduled to rent 4 days ago for 8am and they do not have any cars. It is not the clerks fault. They overbook. There are 8 people that are in the same situation and AVIS let 2 more book online as we were there. The clerk was wonderful. She said this happens every single day. And entire families take a taxi from the airport to show up and there are NO CARS. Corporation's looking to fill the pockets of share holders and not have customer service. So here we are 3 women, in our 60's,stranded trying to have a simple girls trip. They MIGHT have a car this afternoon. No guarantees. Shame on you AVIS!!!!!

Formal Complaint – Incorrect Charges of USD 4,037.43 and USD 3,787.43 for Returned Vehicle



I am writing to formally report that this matter has become even more serious and still remains unresolved.

After recovering access to my card, I found two separate movements from AVIS RENT-A-CAR dated 04/21/2026 related to the same rental case:

USD 4,037.43
-USD 3,787.43
As I have already informed you, the vehicle was returned in person, without damage or incident. For that reason, it is unacceptable that inconsistent amounts and billing movements continue to appear in connection with the same rental.

I urgently request:

A written explanation of the exact nature and origin of both movements.
Immediate confirmation of which amount, if any, is an actual charge and whether the negative amount corresponds to a reversal, adjustment, or temporary authorization.
Immediate cancellation and reversal of any improper charge related to this rental.
Written confirmation that no further charges will be made in connection with this case.
This issue was already reported in a timely manner and, instead of being resolved, it has become more complex. If I do not receive a clear and immediate solution, I will continue escalating this matter with my bank/card issuer and through the appropriate consumer protection and legal channels.

I expect your urgent written response.

The worst company ever

The worst company ever. I had my rental car prepaid 2 weeks in advance. Large SUV. My flight was delayed by 2 hours and when I arrived to the rental window they said my car reservation was canceled because I didn't pick it up on time. Meanwhile, I never got the refund so I had to call customer service to explain that it wasn't my fault that I was 2 hours late. Now she was trying to sell me a small economy car. When I prepaid and reserved a LARGE SUV!!! She had to start the whole new reservation and put a new charge on my card since she couldn't find my original reservation. As soon as she charged me second time she found the first charge and had to start the refund process. It took her 2 hours. The lady was absolutely worthless. She was answering the phone to other customers. And arguing with them about cars while I was standing at her desk like an idiot and waiting for her to finish assisting me.
Anyways, My plane arrived at 1:30. I ended up getting the car by 4:00 pm. With multiple charges!! it should never take that long!!! And when I return my car a week later they try to charge me for the scratch that I didn't even do. The car was all beat up when I got it. I have videos and photos of that car when I was picking it up. Now I have to deal with the consequences of extra charges and deal with customer service again!!

Avis advertised a $49/day rental for 3 days, but I ended up being charged $366.70 — more than double what I expected. The e‑bill is packed with hidden fees that were never clearly disclosed upfront.
This feels like a classic bait‑and‑switch: reasonable daily rate, then surprise charges after the fact. Transparency is severely lacking, and customers should not have to guess what they’re being charged for.
Extremely frustrating experience. I will not rent from Avis again and strongly advise others to check their final bill carefully — or choose a different company altogether.

I strongly do not recommend this rental…

I strongly do not recommend this rental company. Two weeks after returning the car, I kept receiving tickets from their third-party vendor in New York — even though I live in New Jersey, work in New Jersey, and have never even been to the locations where those tickets were issued. What's even more ridiculous is the variety of reasons listed on the tickets. If you've had a similar experience, make sure to carefully check your bills. There's also no customer service department to file a complaint. At first I thought it was a scam — turns out they are the biggest scam of all.
