Aims for posh but comes off as pretentious and over priced.
The Chaberton Lodge advertises as a four star hotel because you can pay extra (£30) to use their pool. The frontage and lobby are impressive but the rooms and service are shabby and poor.
Our room had handles missing from doors, gaps in tiles, split wood. The radiators had no thermostats so the heating was locked on full. Every wooden floor in the hotel creaked loudly so if one of us got up in the night the other was woken up. You could hear creaking floor boards as people walked past the room.
The junior staff were keen but poorly trained/managed - things were slow and often wrong. The senior staff were pompous and grumpy.
The evening menu in the restaurant was pretentious, very expensive - e.g. no chips, no steak. The the breakfast was waiter service and very limited and nothing was served hot.
The hotel is trying to be posh but because it is not well run this just comes off as pretentious and pompous.
