Misleading, Expensive, and Nothing Like I Expected

I strongly recommend avoiding CHAI AI (chai-ai.com).

I found the service through an Instagram ad advertising what appeared to be an immersive, conversational AI companion experience. I went through their onboarding process, created a character, selected a voice, and was eventually offered a discounted 52-week CHAI subscription for $117.99.

What was NOT made clear before I paid was that $117.99 was apparently just the beginning.

Only AFTER completing that purchase was I led through additional screens selling features that appeared necessary to get the “full experience.”

First: a Voice Addon for another $99.99.

Then: an Image Generation package for another $99.99.

Then, after I had already spent $317.97, I was presented with ANOTHER $99.99 annual charge for Video Generation.

Each new add-on was presented only after I had already paid for the previous one. The screens discouraged skipping features with messaging about missing out on the full experience and how other users chose the add-ons. I felt increasingly pressured to keep paying because I had already spent so much and did not want to end up with an incomplete version of the experience I thought I was purchasing.

Thankfully, I finally stopped before paying another $99.99 for video.

And after spending $317.97, the actual experience was incredibly disappointing and nothing like what I reasonably expected from the advertising and onboarding. I expected a natural, interactive AI companion I could actually converse with. Instead, it felt more like interacting with an AI-generated story while the character narrated scenes aloud. I found the experience awkward, unimpressive, and absolutely nowhere near worth hundreds of dollars.

I canceled IMMEDIATELY.

Even cancellation was unnecessarily frustrating. I was taken through multiple retention screens trying to convince me not to cancel, including messaging about how subscription money supports their continued AI research and hardware needs. The control needed to continue through the cancellation process was displayed in extremely light text against a white background and was genuinely difficult to locate.

I immediately contacted CHAI requesting a full refund and provided receipts and screenshots documenting the charges. Despite multiple emails, I have received no response. I have now had to dispute three separate transactions across two different credit cards simply to try to recover the $317.97 I spent on a service I canceled immediately.

AI companion services are inherently going to appeal to people looking for connection and companionship. Those customers deserve complete transparency about what the advertised experience actually includes and what it will ACTUALLY cost before they enter their payment information.

My experience with CHAI AI was the exact opposite.

I would never have knowingly agreed upfront to pay $417.96 per year for all four components they ultimately attempted to sell me. Had the full pricing and actual functionality been clearly presented before my initial purchase, I would not have subscribed at all.

Save yourself the frustration.

The censorship settings are ridiculous…

The censorship settings are ridiculous all I do is put a number and if the number is under 18 it's sensors it. Literally, i have done this on several of their bots. After the introduction, I type 9. Censored, 12 Censored, 15 Censored

The reason I gave it a one star, is because there isn't a zero stars

Clumsy over-censorship and fake "gifted" subscriptions are ruining this platform

The developers are completely destroying user experience. First, the automated censorship filters are incredibly lazy and have zero context awareness. While blocking actual harmful content makes sense, the app aggressively flags normal, innocent words. If you try to do a safe family roleplay and mention a "baby," the filter instantly triggers, breaks the immersion, and ruins the conversation. You are forced to walk on eggshells around basic vocabulary. On top of that, their marketing tactics feel completely dishonest. They randomly "gift" users premium subscriptions, but it is just a brief teaser that lacks the features of an actual paid tier. If you are going to gift your community a subscription, it should function like the real thing, not just act as a cheap, short-lived trick to push people into buying a paid plan. Between the broken filters and the misleading gifts, this platform easily deserves one star. Fix the AI filters and respect your users.

Crucial Warning

Crucial Warning: Chai AI’s Liability Shifting and 5-Year Data Retention
If you use Chai AI, you need to know how they have quietly rewritten their policies. In their latest updates, Chai states that while you "own" your text, you grant them a "perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license" to use your creative content, prompts, and bots for commercial redistribution and advertising.
Furthermore, their privacy policy explicitly states they can retain your harvested chat data for up to 5 years even after you delete your account, and any data already absorbed by their AI training models cannot be removed. This, combined with recent hidden history caps and sudden automated data wipes reported by the community, shows they are prioritizing data-harvesting over user protection. If you value your privacy, stop chatting on this platform.
