Think again

The appalling service I received does not even deserve 1*! A bunch of totally incompetent idiots. Firstly there is the miserable receptionist who has about as much charisma as sour milk and then, if you're lucky enough they may let you be served by bungling Barry who does not have a clue what he is doing. (Neither does anyone else for that matter). Firstly he took my telephone number down incorrectly on the ticket so the shop was unable to get hold of me for the quote. I had to ring them and chase it up and they made me feel bad about it saying "We have been trying to get hold of you!"
The work on my ring was far more expensive than what it should have been so I asked if they could take a picture of it an email to me.
Barry said "oh no - I can't do that! It is way out of my jurisdiction!!! (At this point I was beginning to wonder what this man is capable of??) He cannot convey a telephone message accurately. Every time I asked a question he had to go off and ask someone else, then he would come back and relay the message incorrectly. Eventually they agreed to Whatsapp me a photo of my ring - but of course it was sent to the incorrect number! When I asked where the photos where they were very shirty with me and insisted they were sent the previous evening at 7pm. Stupidly I agreed for them to go ahead with the work on my ring as I had already wasted 2 weeks at this point. They told me that the ring would be ready on the Saturday. It was not. I then messaged the whatapp number and politely asked when my ring would be ready please. I got a curt message back saying that i should contact the shop during working hours. Then 10 minutes later I had another message though saying that they were discontinuing work on my ring as they require all communication with staff to remain respectful! And that I could collect the ring on Tuesday. My husband went on my behalf as I shall never set foot in that comedy show of a shop ever again.
When he asked what the problem was they said that I had accused a member of staff of lying!! TOTALLY UNTRUE!!!!! I remember this shop many years ago when it was established by Jeremy Gainolochlan, a true tradesman who knew what he was doing. He was the man who built up the reputation of the shop that these buffoons are riding on the back of!!! Save your sanity and your money & go elsewhere.

Thank you for your feedback. While we regret that you were unhappy with your experience, we feel it is important to address several factual points and the manner in which communication took place.

We did send both an email and a WhatsApp message the following morning with the photographs of the ring as requested. These were sent using the contact details provided to us.

The decision to discontinue work on the ring was made after a member of our team was accused of lying. At that stage, the tone of communication became inappropriate and disrespectful. We have a duty of care to our staff and do not tolerate abusive language or personal attacks toward them, which is why we chose not to proceed further.

We were also contacted on a Sunday, when the shop is closed. Despite this, we responded during our next working hours to clarify the situation. The ring was later collected by your husband, who apologised to our staff for the manner in which the communication had taken place.

We always aim to provide a professional and respectful service, and while we understand frustrations can arise, we expect the same level of respect in return.

We wish you well going forward.

Magnificent pearls/jewellery

Excellent service took time to help me find the perfect piece of jewellery to compliment my mog dress for my son’s wedding. Finally settling on a wonderful set of double strung pearls with a stunning clasp . I got so many wonderful compliments from the guests.

Very expensive repairs, wrong low quotes for gold necklace

Very expensive repairs. I was offered 9kt scrap value for an 18kt pristine, never worn, straight out of the box necklace. Don't trust.

Thank you for your feedback. We always explain our prices clearly so customers can decide whether or not to go ahead. Laser welding a chain is a delicate and complex repair, which can affect the cost. When it comes to broken chains, we can only buy them at scrap value, and sometimes not at full scrap if the hallmark is incorrect. Just as you wouldn’t expect to sell a two-year-old car for the same price as a brand-new model, a previously broken chain cannot be valued the same as a pristine one. We are unable to offer the retail price for a broken item, as we wouldn’t feel comfortable reselling a chain that has already been broken (even after repair). We truly value our customers and always aim to be transparent and fair.

Given the loss in recent years of lots…

Given the loss in recent years of lots of really useful high street shops, and their inevitable replacement with......well, you know, it's wonderful to still have this horological gem within our locale.
Great service, pricing, skill and enthusiasm, everywhere!
Proper shop, and not a latte in sight.

My great aunt’s left us a clock and a little bit of money to repair it. But unfortunately a mirror had fallen on it, during lockdown. I took it to this repair shop, which was recommended by a neighbour, I have to say they did a fantastic job, we’re very please with the work undertaken, highly recommend.

Great to find locally

Great to find locally and I must say the shop was buzzing with activity, I’ve just had two watches serviced by them. My dad’s old Omega Speedmaster and my wife’s Rolex. I was recommended by my local barber.
I found the staff to be polite knowledgeable and very helpful and the watches came back looking as smart as they did when they were new. One happy customer 😁 it felt like I was on the BBC repair shop, when they asked me what my expectations were, I asked for the watches to look like they did when they were new, I was surprised to be “asked” as most places just polish the watches without asking. I had a bad experience with a previous repairer who polished my vintage GMT to death! All I can say, this place obviously takes notice of its customers needs.
I must admit I was surprised to see the bad reviews, one man’s hero is an others villain.
I personally couldn’t be happier. It guess most people forget how important it is to leave a good reviews, you pays your money and that’s the end of it. It’s important to leave good feedback as we’ll as negative

Disgraceful and dishonest watch repairers

I took my watch that is precious to me because my children bought it for me to this watch repairers, I specifically found a Tissot service center to be sure it is well looked after. I took it to them because my button was not working,
They had it two weeks and no word from them, I called the shop and they told me it would need to be sent to Tissot as they can not repair it because it is a solar watch, informing me Tissot would offer me a replacement for a third of the price if Tissot could not fix it, which I found a strange thing to say to me 2 weeks after they took my watch, instead of telling me on the day I took it to them. Tissot explained to me that was false and they would not offer me a new one for a third of the price. Tissot also told me the only people who can fix the solar watches is Tissot.
I noticed the button miraculously was now working.
I have a solar powered version and it should last for a month with no charge. A month later my watch stopped working.
I sent it to Tissot and they informed me someone had opened the watch and broke it.
Not only did the staff lie to me, they broke my watch and gave it back to me under false pretenses.
This company is not to be trusted. Not only did they break my watch, they lied about not opening it, did not inform me they had broken it and then lied about what Tissot would do about it.
I am very upset to say the least.
I explained the whole situation to Tissot about what had happened, they were most apologetic and gave me a large discount to repair and service my watch.
Do not make the mistake of trusting this watch repairers. This is the worst and most dishonest company I have ever had to deal with. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
If you try to lie in the reply to my review, I will address any and all lies through another review.

Knowledgeable about clocks but what a pity about the front of house staff

The technical expertise of George, the watch maker at Antique & Modern, is second to none and he is always ready to offer help and advice. However, the front of house staff appear off-hand and unhelpful, conducting themselves as if they are doing one a favour. When I contacted Antique & Modern recently, I was told that they are accepting no new work until April (one assumes 2022) and even if I took my time piece in, there was no guarantee that it would be looked at. As a result, I shall take my Edwardian clock elsewhere. This is a pity, as I had the greatest confidence in George getting to the root of the problem.

Mr Turner, we are sorry you did not have as pleasant an experience contacting Antique and Modern as most of our customers. Unfortunately, we are in the position of having to look for a replacement for George our CLOCK maker (who is retiring). It should be appreciated that decent and reputable clock makers are as rare as hen's teeth, and therefore we will not be replacing George with a substandard technician. This has, unfortunately led to a delay in accepting new work, as we have no desire to make promises to customers that we cannot keep.
Regarding the conduct of our "front of house" staff, we can only apologise that you felt put out, and can assure both you and our other customers that this is not the standard practice here at Antique and Modern.

Antique and Modern cannot be trusted.

I had already had two Seiko titanium watches, one automatic and one solar, both of which had given good service. So I bought my wife a Seiko solar as a present in February 2018. After a little over a year my wife's watch would only run for a few hours before stopping. Unfortunately the jeweller from whom I had bought it had ceased trading and I had not retained proof of purchase so I went to the local repairer 'Antique and Modern' in Barnet. They charged £25 for a new 'condenser' and handed the watch back to me with exactly the same fault. I took it back and they then asked £113 for 'a new movement'. They even said that they would be losing money at that price. This sounded wrong to me so I sent the watch off to Seiko UK on the off-chance. Seiko repaired the watch quickly and sent it back, the invoice showed that the 'new movement' cost was £58, which they discounted by 100% so they charged nothing at all, not even postage.

We would like to clarify a few of the points made above by Mr Whitton, as it appears that he has not provided all the facts in this matter.
We did indeed charge £25 for a CAPACITOR, which is standard for the error/fault described by Mr Whitton. This was in fact AFTER we had discussed the matter with Mr Whitton, and actually advised him to take the watch back to the business he bought it from, or failing that Seiko themselves. As this was not possible, we agreed to undertake the repair. The capacitor provided was provided for less than cost on this occasion, and the watch was NOT "handed back with exactly the same fault", as we pointed out to Mr Whitton that should the capacitor not remedy the situation, a service would be needed.
Mr Whitton then returned with the watch, and we explained again that the only option open to us would be to exchange the movement.
Mr Whitton then requested we complete a "diagnostic report", which we informed him was not possible for his watch. He then requested that we provide him with a refund, as we "can surely use the capacitor again".
Throughout the whole exchange, Mr Whitton did not seem to take into account the fact that labour is involved, as even the removal of the capacitor should have really incurred a further charge.
As to the price of the movement, we can unequivocally state that the price of this to US is £94.95, not including VAT and postage, therefore we cannot see how Mr Whitton can say that, in his clearly infinite wisdom, "This sounded wrong".
We are sorry that Mr Whitton does not feel that he has been treated fairly by us, but we are certain that we have provided enough accurate detail regarding this unfair (to us) exchange to ensure that other potential customers are not put off by Mr Whitton's diatribe.

The ONLY place to take your watches

I have brought some beautiful pieces of jewellery from here before and this is the ONLY place that I will bring mine or my husband watches, we have a few different sorts of watches including 2 omega’s and they are great with all of them. All the staff are super friendly and will go above and beyond to help you the best the can. Not only are they amazing at fixing and servicing watches but they also have an amazing selection of jewellery. I honestly cannot speak highly enough of this amazing shop.
