Worst LBS ever
Hi guys,
Just wanted to give you a word of warning about this company.
I live local to this LBS but hadn’t used them before for no particular reason, so decided to give it a try in the hope it could be the place to use for all my bike needs.
On June 16th I took my Caliber triple B to them for a service, and to also check the rear derailleur which was rubbing a little on the spokes. On collection the man in the shop told me all the things they had checked and done, etc. As soon as I came out of the shop with the bike I put it into gear manually, and then proceeded to get on and pedal. This caused the rear derailleur to collapse immediately against the spokes and got jammed there. I had to pull it off to release it. I remember the back wheel wouldn’t turn since the derailleur was still heavily rubbing the spokes.
I then took the bike back to the shop and the man there blamed me for getting the bike into gear by pedalling with my hand, which gives you an idea this person didn’t have a clue what he was talking about. He showed me some paper that apparently proved they’d done the work, and he said he had taken the bike himself for a ride that morning and the bike was fine, which I don’t believe for a second.
The bike was left with them to sort out and a few days later they rang me to say they had found the problem, which was that the derailleur had a fracture which they hadn’t seen and it had broken when I pedalled. They offered to fix it for me if I could find a Sram derailleur since they didn’t work with Sram. Needless to say I went to collect my bike and took it somewhere else. On collection, the derailleur was in two pieces and the rear wheel was spinning normally.
Now, this was very strange because when the bike was left, the back wheel wasn’t spinning and the derailleur wasn’t broken, I had to pull it off and it was still intact. When I collected the bike it was broken in two pieces.
The one thing I’m certain is that they hadn’t checked the derailleur, because if as they say there was a fracture present in the metal, they should have picked it up, during the service or during testing.
Thankfully I took the bike back to Go Outdoors and they told me since I had bought it only 18 months before, the rear derailleur should still be repaired under guarantee. In the meantime I started a claim against the LBS after advice from Trading Standards, and contacted them by letter which they didn’t even bother to reply. Before considering going to the small claims court I found out there is a chargeback system which allows you to claim money back from the card issuer in situations like this. I claimed and got the cost of the bike service (£49.95) refunded, so I can’t now claim that money back again through the courts , but I really wanted to let you know the kind of people running that shop, just be careful.
