I had an extremely disappointing…

I had an extremely disappointing experience with ELVERMERE CONSTRUCTION LTD (formerly AMARS TILING SPECIALIST LTD, company no. 14007351). I would strongly advise other homeowners to think twice before hiring this contractor.
I paid £6,400 in October 2026 for renovation works and materials, including patio tiling, basement flooring, WC renovation, kitchen works and waste removal.
Not a single project was fully completed. Instead, the contractor repeatedly started new jobs without finishing existing ones, leaving several areas of my house looking like a construction site. I also have concerns about damage caused around the WC wall, which I am having independently assessed.
Constant delays and broken promises: He regularly promised to arrive at 8–9am but turned up hours later, sometimes in the afternoon. On several occasions, he failed to attend as expected, leaving me chasing him for updates. Jobs that should have taken days dragged on for weeks.
Poor management and questionable competence: Work appeared poorly planned, materials were frequently missing, and progress was painfully slow. He would sometimes send unfamiliar workers to my home without proper introductions or coordination, while claiming he was nearby or on his way. I lost confidence in his ability to manage or complete the work professionally.
Repeated demands for money: Despite receiving substantial advance payments and leaving projects unfinished, he kept requesting additional funds. On 20 October, I transferred another £2,500 in good faith after he asked for money to continue. Even then, the work remained unfinished.
Lack of financial transparency: I provided £1,400 for materials on the understanding that receipts would be supplied and any difference reconciled. Despite repeated requests, I never received a satisfactory accounting of the expenditure.
Waste left behind: Waste removal was specifically agreed at £800. Despite numerous promises, he failed to remove the accumulated construction waste, which obstructed access to our household bins.
Agreed refund never paid: When I finally terminated the arrangement, we reviewed the completed work and agreed that £490 should be returned. He explicitly confirmed this in writing. I subsequently requested £1,290, including the £800 for waste removal that had not been performed. No refund was received.
Threatening behaviour: Most shockingly, when I requested my money and mentioned leaving an honest review, he responded with abuse and threats, including:
- "If I see any reviews from you you Will laugh regretting I promise you"
- "You will see me around all the times"
- "Try it and see the consequences"
This is especially concerning given that he knows where my family lives.
I have formally reported these threats to the Metropolitan Police. I am also pursuing financial recovery and assessing further legal action for the unfinished work and property damage.
I gave this contractor numerous opportunities, tolerated repeated delays and paid additional money in good faith. In return, I experienced unreliable attendance, unfinished and poorly managed work, unanswered financial questions, broken promises and intimidation.
My recommendation: avoid this company. Do not pay substantial advances for unfinished work, and insist on clear milestones, receipts and proper documentation.
Everything described above is based on my personal experience, supported by WhatsApp messages, bank-transfer records and photographs.
