Bought a used car from York Clifton Moor dealership and the experience was diabolical from start to finish.
Saw the car online and paid the reservation fee and booked in to see it.
I was called next day by Ollie who said the car wasn't prepared, but when would you like to come in ? I said I'd already booked the appointment for 2 days time !
He the then rang the next day saying the same thing. Told him I had only spoken to him the day before which he denied !
Anyway turned up for the appt with him, the car had been prepared after all ! He wasn't inspiring me with confidence.
Anyway I liked the car and it was a reasonable price so booked in a week later at 10.30am to finalise and pick the car up.
Week later, arrived on time to see the car been cleaned and valeted which I assume would have been done in the 7 days before I was collecting it.
Anyway the process was ridiculously long whilst Ollie faffed about getting bank statements scanned etc going to and fro to the Sales Manager as if it was his first day at work !
Finally at 12.15pm he said everything was done and he went to get the keys.
Another problem, no MOT had been done by them, He tried to blame someone else but they have had a week to prepare the Car.
I then had to wait till this was done. In the meantime he just left me sat at the desk whilst he hid in the back or laughed and joked with his colleagues totally ignoring me.
They all had a big McDonald's delivered whilst I sat there hungry. No one bothered to ask if they could drive me to an outlet for food or drink.
Whilst waiting I observed very poor customer service from an other employee on the phone. They received calls about servicing and when told the price the customer didn't go ahead. The employee pulled faces and when the customer hung up they were slagging them off to another colleague.
The whole time the Sales Manager sat on his backside doing nothing, never got up to interact with me once or even apologise for the totally amateurish service I was receiving.
Finally at 1.30pm, 3 hours after I first attended, the car was finally ready and of course by now I was raging as I had been ignored for the last hour and a quarter waiting for the MOT to be done.
I got in to find hardly any petrol in it and he gave me the keys. I stated I was appalled by the very poor experience I had received. He just shrugged his shoulders and walked off.
To call Ollie incompetent would be an understatement, it was like he had never done the job before and the Sales Manager was just as bad as they offered no empathy or apologies.
Three days later I got the MOT certificate through the post as they forgot to give me that as well !
I did put an official complaint in via their official complaints portal on the 18th July, with a resolution expected of the 27th July.
Guess what, haven't heard a thing.
They are happy to take £16,400 for a car but have never met such incompetent employees in all my life. Aftercare service zero.
Avoid at all costs.
I wish I could give this company a negative rating.
I purchased a car entirely online, and my experience has been extremely disappointing. The salesperson, Zak Mason, failed to disclose numerous cosmetic defects and delivered the vehicle in an unacceptable condition.
The car arrived with heavily stained seats, a chipped instrument cluster, a chipped windscreen, a deep chip on the door pillar, and multiple scratches throughout the interior. I was assured by Zak that the marks inside were simply polishing residue, but this was clearly untrue. There was also a minor scratch on one of the doors that had been poorly touched up, with paintwork that looked extremely unprofessional.
Zak’s attitude changed completely once the car had been delivered. He also misled me about the finance. I was assured the interest rate would be 11.8%, but when the finance agreement arrived it was 12.9%. The finance company informed me that the dealer uses a fixed rate, meaning they would have known this from the outset.
After repeated emails and phone calls, a valet was eventually arranged at the Motherwell branch of Evans Halshaw. The staff there were shocked by the condition in which the car had been delivered and confirmed that it required a professional valet rather than a standard clean. Despite this, Zak stopped responding to my emails and phone calls, and the sales manager never returned my calls either.
The condition under the bonnet was equally unacceptable. The engine bay was full of cobwebs, leaves, and large deposits of sand—not just dust. Zak attempted to explain this away by saying the car had been driven in the rain during delivery, which simply does not account for its condition.
Unfortunately, my experience worsened after visiting the Motherwell branch. My car was returned with additional damage, including scratches to the piano black trim and several paint chips on the door frame, which appear to have been caused by equipment being placed against the vehicle without adequate protection.
As this was a distance (online) purchase, I exercised my legal right to reject the vehicle within the 14-day cooling-off period. Rather than responding promptly, the dealership ignored my request for five days. I was then contacted by Sean, who incorrectly claimed that I could not return the car because it had passed its MOT five months before delivery. This has no bearing on my statutory cancellation rights for a distance sale.
Zak Mason was courteous only until the vehicle was delivered. After that, communication stopped entirely. Given the way this matter has been handled, I am now escalating my complaint to the company’s head office and submitting a formal complaint to the Motor Ombudsman.
Based on my experience, I would strongly advise anyone considering buying a vehicle online from this dealership to proceed with extreme caution.
UPDATE - 22/07/2026
I received no feedback from the dealership , Zak never replied back to any email . A formal complaint was filed using Evans and Halshaw forms but no correspondance either. I would now proceed to file a formal complaint to Motor Ombudsman.
UPDATE - 04/08/2026
Evans and Halshaw completely quite , no response to complaints form , headoffice customer service doesnt repond either , Duncan Brydie (used car bussiness manager) doesnt bother to reply either.
AVOID Evans and Halshaw if you want peace of mind . They would be very nice until they have your money.

I don't think Evans Halshaw York really care about their Used Car customer service, they just want rid (and the reviews seem to back up my experience). I've had to take the used Fiesta I bought back three times to get a problem fixed which arose even before I arrived home on purchasing it (which would certainly have shown up on the used car vehicle checks they are meant to do). The first time I took it back to 'diagnose' the problem and then they had to order parts. I had to chase the parts up two weeks later. I went back a second time to have the parts fitted, and again the problem rearose before I even arrived home. They had clearly fobbed me off with insufficient number of parts (possibly hadn't ordered any new ones at all!). So I had to go back a third time another couple of weeks later. I live 20 miles away and have had to take time off work because the service dept don't open Saturdays (!!).
On the whole I wouldn't recommend buying a used car here. They have a lot of sales people standing around but few "customer service" people and communication is poor. Save money and buy privately as the dealer guarantee is worthless. I only gave 2 stars because Kerry on the service desk was lovely, and the only vaguely apologetic person about the whole shambolic situation.

I recently visited Evans Halshaw Citreon in York. A big thank you to you all but in particular Kieran who was so helpful. The whole buying process was hassle free and i am very happy with my purchase, DS4. Car salesmen get a bad rap sometimes but if there were more like Kieran it wouldnt be so. Massive thank you

Very poor service from a team member in the sales team.We went to discuss about a used car we have seen online today, however the very first impression we had from the salesman is that they are not at all interested in any work today. He was very reluctant to help us with any information we needed and his attitude was like we have no right to say no to his suggestions and said we are wasting his time if we don’t buy a car from him today. Never ever go back to this place essentially to person.

Please can someone contact me with regards to a complaint I filed on the 19th April, your automated email response says I should have heard within 48 hours. I’ve since spoke with somebody using online chat on the 1st and 7th May, on both occasions I was told they would chase this and have someone contact me ASAP… I’m still waiting!

I can't fault the service from reception (customer service) and my car is now running well again. However, when bringing my Hyundai last week for a new clutch, an incorrect one had been ordered. Mistakes happen, but I was left without a car for 5 days and, whilst I managed that, there was no offer of any deduction for my inconvenience and I was left disappointed and dissatisfied. In the past I have always used there and never had an issue before.
