Recruitment consultant had a bad attitude. Pushy. Condescending. Repeatedly told me I should accept the role because I am desperate for work and other people would be grateful for such an opportunity, which I found disgusting and rude.
I am not "desperate" for a job. I am being intentionally picky about finding the right role and employer specifically because I am not desperate and can afford to take my time and not accept any role that comes my way.
She refused to give me the job spec on the initial call and insisted that I attend a Teams video call interview before she would provide further information.
I am a qualified and experienced building surveyor and worked as a trained recruitment consultant specialising in the white collar construction industry, so I know how it should be done.
The email with the Teams link asked for my right to work share code and to upload my right to work documents, such as a passport and to sign a candidate declaration.
Under recruitment and GDPR law, yes, you should seek the candidates signed consent, application form, verify their identification and conduct a pre-screening interview before a candidate's can be passed to a client for consideration.
However, you should divulge the job spec information first and discuss what yhe needs and wants of the candidate are and ensure this matches with the client before proceeding to that stage of registration.
This recruitment agency are not specialising in white collar construction recruitment. That much is evident. They seemed out of their depth.
Mumbled some vague and contradictory information about the role and company, which wasn't clear at all and showed that they did not understand the role they were recruiting for.
To offer a contract role inside IR35, which I had to ask on the Teams call, because she didn't know, at a rate of £13.50 per hour (minimum wage), covering a huge area with my own car and fuel expenses, then try to blow smoke up my ass telling me with company benefits it would come to £30K, but I would be gaining an "invaluable" qualification that she didn't know anything about with a role that would lead to possibly permanent employment after 6 or 12 months (she wasn't sure) and a potential wage rise in the future.
Usually inside IR35 does not guarantee holiday or sick pay. The client has full control. You take home much less and are liable for fines if your self assessment tax returns have any discrepencies.
Effectively, I would not be entitled to claim any expenses from HMRC, it would be out of pocket. Essentially, I would be working for less than minimum wage, however the consultant tried to paint it.
Covering a huge region with my own car.
No thanks.
I would avoid this recruiter and deal directly with white collar construction/building surveying recruitment consultants who specialise in this area.

I am struggling to express how much I recommend express! I signed up a couple of days after finishing university (on a Monday), and by the Friday I had a job offer. They made the whole process seamless and stress free, and the job that I had during my time with express was in the most lovely, supportive environment. Everyone is so friendly and they always pick up the phone immediately! Can’t recommend them enough, if you’re struggling to find work then don’t hesitate to sign up.

Applied for a post that I really wanted and thought I may be in with a chance. Contacted Express recruitment where I had found the post. They really looked after me sorting out an interview for me, collecting and passing on my necessary documents and CV. They contacted me every day leading up to the interview checking everything was good and giving me pointers for the interview.

I called Express Recruitment in Nottingham in July 2021 in the morning about looking for temporary work, by lunchtime I had a call back and a few hours later I had a teams video call with a consultant Chris Slater who came across very polite, professional and extremely helpful.
He swiftly sent over my cv the same day to a local company and a few days later I had a teams video call and secured a 3 months contract. The whole experience was very efficient and without hassle. Filling out the required paperwork & sending it back to the agency was very uncomplicated. I spoke with other people at Express who were also very polite and helpful.
