Wrong colour, wrong paint terrible customer service
I own a show-winning boat built in 1968, and its engine needed repainting. I chose Full Throttle Custom Garage because I believed they specialised in custom builds and restorations and would understand the care and attention to detail necessary to paint the engine to the required specifications. Unfortunately, that assumption proved to be entirely wrong.
I took the boat to the workshop so the team could see firsthand the standard of workmanship and detail already achieved. I spoke directly with Tim, the painter, and clearly explained the following requirements:
• match the engine’s existing colour;
• apply a clear coat to protect the finish from fading caused by exposure to the elements; and
• use the supplied 2,000-degree high-temperature paint on the areas of the cylinder head exposed to exhaust heat.
• I provided an empty paint can and asked for a small quantity of the paint for touch-ups.
Tim confirmed that he understood and agreed to these specifications.
When I collected the engine, I was shocked to find that it had been painted entirely in the wrong colour and that the specified high-temperature areas had not been coated with the paint I supplied. Tim then told me that painting different sections was not possible. He also said that the engine had not been clear coated because he had used some industrial paint that supposedly did not require it and he had used all the paint, so he didn’t supply any touch up paint.
None of these changes were discussed with me beforehand. Had I been told that the agreed requirements would not be followed, I could have taken the engine elsewhere.
Heath, the manager, then refused to release my engine unless I paid for the painting, despite the work not meeting the agreed specifications.
I am deeply dissatisfied with the finished job, the lack of transparency and with the dismissive way my concerns were handled when I explained that the work did not meet the clearly agreed requirements.
