Working for Guidant Global at Waitrose
If you care about your mental health, I strongly advise against working for Guidant Global. I worked at multiple Waitrose partner stores across various locations, as well as the Waitrose Coulsdon Distribution Centre, and my experience was extremely disappointing.
At the stores:
The experience varied depending on your line manager. Some were okay, but if the manager does not like you often for no clear reason they might report you to Guidant with false accusations, which can lead to you being banned from that store. Unfortunately, Guidant usually sides with the store managers because agency workers are seen as easily replaceable. They rarely support you and always prioritise keeping clients happy over your wellbeing.
At the Waitrose Coulsdon Distribution Centre:
The environment was chaotic and stressful. It felt more like a detention unit than a workplace. Some staff, including Guidant supervisors, behaved very poorly. There were instances of staff deliberately crashing trolleys into each other, pushing and verbally abusing people trying to pass, and I also witnessed some colleagues under the influence of substances during shifts.
Supervisors were not properly trained, especially regarding GDPR. I witnessed supervisors sharing employees’ personal information openly with others, which is completely unacceptable.
The management was largely absent when concerns were raised. The manager was biased, often cancelling shifts for people he disliked and giving them to others, regardless of work performance. For example, although I consistently achieved high pick rates (around 1200 items per shift), the manager would sometimes prioritise staff with much lower rates simply because of personal favouritism.
Some supervisors were friends with certain staff members and allowed them to take extended breaks, including cigarette breaks, or to slack off without consequences.
The workplace culture was male dominated, with aggressive behaviour normalised and tolerated. Discrimination was common, and complaints were routinely ignored.
Additionally, shifts sometimes ended at 4:00 am, leaving those without a car stranded in Coulsdon with very limited public transport options until hours later.
The only positive aspect was the cheap canteen food. However, that is not enough to outweigh the many problems.
This is not everything there are many more issues that I did not mention.
In summary, I would not recommend working for Guidant Global at Waitrose whether as agency or permanent staff. The lack of support, poor management, toxic culture, and unfair treatment make it a very difficult place to work.
