Hertz has been pretty great, but the speed of getting cars is just annoyingly slow. I have rented cars twice in the last month, one at the IAD airport where it took me almost an hour to get a car. An... See more

90 min wait no staff hopeless

We arrived a Palma airport to be told there is at least a 90 min wait to pick up a car hopeless it is 1630 on a Sunday they only have x3 members of staff. They know exactly how many bookings they have. Totally useless will never book with them again.

Scammers and con artists

Scammers and con artists. They took €1,271.45 from my deposit for damage to the windshield, which was only a small, almost invisible chip. It could have been repaired with a special resin, not a full windshield replacement, which would have cost €300-600 anyway. Of course, I could have covered the cost of the windshield repair, which would have been proportionate to the damage, not such an astronomical sum. Furthermore, I'd never seen these chips before, so it's very possible I didn't contribute to them. I didn't receive a detailed photo of the windshield before renting the car. It's suspicious. It's possible the chip was there before, but they're trying to pin the blame on me.

Ignorant Agent at counter

My "reserved" car pickup time "10:00AM". Arrived at that exact time in line. A few folks ahead, and by 10:15, my turn at counter... Agent tells me there are no cars, EXCEPT the one I can UPGRADE to for 40 bux extra. UMM NO! After another full hour of waiting (+ me going up to the counter and complaining) I finally get a car. Which ended up being that larger vehicle that they TRIED to have me pay extra for. SO it's obvious they HAD a car to give me earlier, but were NOT doing the right thing. NOT MY FAULT they don't RESERVE the type of car I was paying for..Total ignorance!

I was charged €1,300.20 after a 22-hour…

I was charged €1,300 after a 22-hour rental for an alleged roof dent and €150 in 'smoking' costs at Luxembourg Airport. I disputed both charges. The vehicle's pre-rental report did not contain a clear photograph of the centre of the roof, and the photographs supplied as evidence of the alleged dent did not clearly demonstrate it. I have requested the underlying pre-rental photographs, inspection records and repair documentation. The proof they sent of the suppose dent cannot even be seen in the pictures. I also disputed the smoke charge because the vehicle already had a pungent cigarette smell when collected, and neither my partner nor I smoke. Mind you, I hired two travel seats from them for my one and two year old babies and they accused me of smoking in the car. The matter is currently formally disputed with Hertz, I have yet to receive a response

Hours waiting at Boston airport rental

Spent hours waiting at the Logan airport rental. It’s insane they would understaff it so much they can’t even service it. There was effectively 1.5 people there. All other brands could take people virtually immediately (it’s pretty shocking in local where you can see them all side by side).
I won’t book Hertz again for sure, this is some of the worst customer service I’ve ever seen…

I've been using Hertz for years and…

I've been using Hertz for years and would have given them 5 stars in the past, but the new "AI" damage system, now drops them to 1 star (zero if that were possible).
I return the car at HNL airport on Dec 14 at 11:18 AM HST and it was scanned by this new UVeye machine. Real humans direct me where to park. I get my things and wait next to the car for a REAL HUMAN to check me out, as I've done countless times in the past when returning my car to Hertz. In the next row over, a REAL HUMAN Hertz employees tells me loudly, "You don't have to wait. Just leave the key inside". I reply, "OK, the key is in the cupholder"... and I get on the shuttle bus back to the terminal to catch my flight...

As we are getting ready to board the flight, at 12:12 PM HST, I get a txt message stating that "New Damage was detected on your Hertz Rental".

The system waiting almost an hour to send this message, rather than notify me in a timely manner so that I and a Hertz rep could examine the damage together before I let the Hertz facility.

The report includes one photo, and there is no visible damage to the car. The report also shows 3 prior damage incidents before I picked up the car.

One thing for sure, I will never accept a black or unwashed car again, so I can examine for prior damage.

Washington Union Station.

Abysmal service. Vehicle was downgraded without change of price. My wife actually wasn't put on as an additional driver - good thing we phoned back during the trip. And customer service later not helping at all. Never again.

We specifically chose Hertz because…

We specifically chose Hertz because they offered "Polestar 2 or similar electric vehicle" as an option. When we showed up they had no electric car and we were offered a Diesel. The manager then took 3 days to respond to our email, and offered no compensation, but the option of driving back to Bilbao and replacing the diesel car we had with an electric (not a Polestar 2, a Renault 5 with much less range). We declined, as it would have been a 10 hour roundtrip and it was the day before we were to head back to Bilbao and return the car anyway. Can't recommend Hertz at all if you think a 'reservation' actually means they'll hold the vehicle you reserved, and not just offer you something completely different.

Van rental

I wasted over an hour calling various numbers—including the one listed on their website—but no one answered; I simply lost time and money. Even though my account was verified, the van was never used—I was left with nothing but frustration and the cost of renting from another company.

There was no one at the counter

There was no one at the counter. We had to wait about 30 minutes before someone arrived. The gas tank wasn't full when we picked it up, and they charged us for not returning it full.

I tried to pick up my prepaid…

I tried to pick up my prepaid reservation last night in Orlando Airport. The branch wouldn't let me get the car because of an error in their system. They weren't sure that I had already paid.

I have paid though, and I have confirmed this with my bank.

This is jeopardising the whole vacation, for my pregnant wife and me, as we are on a tight schedule.

The Orlando branch kept referring me to managers and costumer support phone numbers and I have now spoken to 10 different people from there and on the phone.

No one seems to be wanting to help me. This will probably end up with a chargeback for fraud if I don't get the car today.

Don't use Hertz Norway

Went to Norway for a week at the beginning of June 2026. Hertz had no issues with taking my money for this car rental, including over a £300 deposit to cover the costs of all tolls whilst we were driving in Norway. Skip a head to 2 weeks after I had returned from Norway and I got an emailed confirmation of the remaining amount of my deposit that was being returned to me after the tolls had been fully invoiced and paid.

Skip ahead to July and I get an email from Hertz Norway with regards to a further toll payment that I needed to make. I emailed them to confirm the payment and why it wasn't deducted from my initial deposit. To which I got no response.

I would also like to point out that Hertz Norway does not have an online payment portal where by you can pay these invoices online and due to the fact that I am from the UK there is also no contact telephone number for them either.

I chased Hertz Norway over email to get a payment link or a form of method as to how I could settle this invoice, to which I still did not get a reply. I then proceeded to get a debt collection letter come through to me in the post including a large late payment fee for this invoice that I had been trying to pay for nearly 2 months!

It was only after I threated to raise an official complaint that someone finally bothered to email me back, giving me bank transfer details. My UK bank account charged me a 40% fee to settle the invoice through this method, so it ended up still being significantly higher than the original price.

This company's aftersales care to their customers is absolutely atrocious. You are the first company to take money from customers and charge a fortune to rent a car and then when it comes to that same level of attention to detail after the initial sale, the acknowledgement to my struggle with this payment. All of the above has made sure I will be never using Hertz again to rent a car...

You as a company need to do better

Worst experience and website not working

I rented a car in Seattle and needed to extend the rental. I received a text link to extend and the website wasn’t working. I called the location 22 times with no answer. I then drove 35 minutes to airport to extend and avoid late charges. I decided to call prior to going to the counter and I watched the rep sit on his cell phone browsing the internet looking at the phone ring. I proceeded to counter and then he was rude as hell. Hertz needs to revamp their system and get better employees. This cost me gas and time it would have taken 2 seconds to answer the phone.

read me before using the company

Honestly, I would never use this company again and I would strongly recommend people stay away from them.

My car was stolen after my keys were taken during a burglary, and dealing with this company afterwards has been an absolute nightmare. I have spoken to so many different people, explained the situation over and over again, provided the relevant reference numbers and explained everything that happened, but not one person has actually been helpful.

I was charged a huge excess, which I disputed, and I have had to chase and dispute other charges as well. Despite knowing that the car was stolen and that I was not in possession of it, I am still receiving letters asking me to pay for things that happened while the car was being used by whoever stole it.

I’ve now received another letter saying I have to pay for fuel that was taken from a petrol station while the stolen car was being used, plus an administration fee. They already know what happened. They already have the reference number. They already have all the information. So why am I still having to deal with this?

The worst part is the complete lack of help. I have spoken to so many people at this company and honestly, I have not received any actual help from anyone. I keep having to explain the same situation again and again, chase things myself and deal with more charges.

At this point, it’s not even about the money. It’s the principle. I was the victim of a car theft, and instead of feeling like someone was actually trying to help resolve the situation, I have felt like I’ve had to fight them every step of the way.

Absolutely terrible experience from start to finish. I would never use this company again.

They steal your money

Waited over 1 hour in line, while I'm also pregnant even though I reserved my car ahead of time. After returning the car in good condition they threatened to fine me 500$ for damages that did not exist. When I refused to pay my money towards damages I never caused they threatened to put my license of the list. Also the women I spoke yoo couldn't speak French and barely spoke English. She became aggressive just because I stated I found it unfair to be charged for something I didn't do. Plus they didn't even give me the car I reserved, I had to settle for a cheaper car......terrible service

Over charged, abused, swindled, and complaints ignored

I ordered a Rav4 and was offered a guaranteed rate. When I got to Toronto airport I was overcharged, subject to homophobic abuse, given a lesser car and told I was leaving a deposit which would be refunded. Well I got no refund. I wrote to their customer services and they promised to get back to me. That never happened. Their chat bot doesn't recognize my account and tells me my name is spelt wrongly! There is NO customer support. Their offering is not backed up by their service. I do not think anyone should use this company.
