Disappointments and Disarray
My stay at the Hyatt hotel in Venice was a tumultuous journey with both highs and lows. Despite being promised transportation upon booking, we found ourselves stranded due to boat engine issues just days before our arrival, forcing us to navigate our own way to the hotel. Although greeted warmly and given a room upgrade as compensation for the inconvenience, our experience quickly soured. The room was plagued with maintenance problems: malfunctioning lights, inadequate air conditioning (the system only provided heat, not cooling, and was stuck at 24 degC - the hotel's solution was to open the window for cooling, which wasn't easy due to the window being stuck), and dysfunctional curtains. Despite reporting these issues to the help desk, little was done to address them.
The situation escalated when a foul odour emanated from the drains inside the bathroom, prompting an immediate complaint. Instead of handling the matter professionally, a staff member worsened it by spraying heavy perfume into the bathroom to mask the odour, despite my asthma. When I informed him of my condition, he callously continued spraying (presumably just to empty the can). I was astonished and hastily vacated the room. My husband tried to clear the "fog" from the bathroom by opening the window in the room (with great difficulty), but this resulted in the "fog" triggering the smoke alarm as it moved from the bathroom to the window, causing the hotel to be evacuated (it appears that the extractor fan in the bathroom was not working, either). No staff came to investigate the cause of the alarm, and initially, my husband was accused of setting off the alarm deliberately!
After being relocated to another room, we encountered further disappointments. While the air conditioning functioned (the heating temperature could be adjusted this time), we were surprised to learn that the hotel only provided heating, not cooling—a fact we discovered upon realizing the air conditioner was not working in our initial room. Additionally, arriving to find that the sheets were very dirty, and there was a dirty cloth on the bed headboard. It appeared that the room had not been cleaned properly. This discovery added to our dismay, as it indicated a lack of attention to cleanliness and hygiene standards.
The downward spiral continued when our complimentary bottled water supply was not replenished because half a bottle remained from the previous day. We contacted the reception and was informed that any additional bottles would be charged to our room, since they only provided one bottle of still and one bottle of sparkling water per room per day. We had to argue our point that we had not received a fresh bottle that day, but they eventually agreed to swap out the half bottle for a full bottle. Being informed that unemptied bottles wouldn't be replaced without charge was an unexpected and unwelcome policy.
In conclusion, while the Hyatt hotel initially seemed promising with its friendly staff and room upgrade, the numerous maintenance issues, health hazards, and questionable policies significantly marred the experience. With unresolved problems, unprofessional conduct, and disappointing service, this stay fell short of the standards expected from a reputable hotel chain.
