Undisclosed camera at private villa facing the pool area
I booked a one-week package holiday with Ionian & Aegean Island Holidays, staying at Villa Andigone in Paxos. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing and left me feeling very uncomfortable throughout what should have been a wonderful family holiday.
On the first day of our stay, whilst my children and I were using the pool, I received a message from the local representative advising that the owner had requested that we stop using a buoy that was located poolside. This immediately raised concerns as I could not see anybody observing us. After looking around the property, I discovered what appeared to be a camera overlooking the pool area.
The presence of an undisclosed camera overlooking an area where my children and I were swimming in minimal clothing was deeply concerning. The camera had not been disclosed before booking, in the villa description, or upon arrival.
After I reported my concerns, the camera was subsequently removed whilst I was out of the property. The explanation provided was that it was a dummy security device intended to deter thieves. However, I struggled to reconcile this explanation with the fact that the owner was aware of what we were doing in the pool at the time. The camera was also not visible from the front of the property where thieves would be expected to enter; it was positioned at the side of the property facing the pool. I remain disappointed that the holiday company relied solely on the owner's explanation rather than carrying out any independent investigation, especially when children are involved.
In addition, there were several occasions where the male owner and male maintenance personnel entered the property grounds during our stay and, on one occasion, the female owner entered the villa after knocking once. As someone who had booked a private villa holiday, I found this intrusive and inconsistent with the level of privacy I expected. You should be informed when maintenance staff will be coming. As a single parent travelling alone with my two children for the first time, this was all extremely stressful for me and has knocked my confidence on the first solo trip I've taken them on.
The issues arose on the first day and affected the remainder of the holiday. My children and I no longer felt comfortable spending time at the villa and spent far more time away from the property than we had intended.
I will say that Thomas in Customer Relations was polite and responsive throughout the complaints process once they finally got back to me, and the company did increase its compensation offer during discussions. However, I ultimately felt that the seriousness of my concerns and the impact on our holiday were not fully reflected in the final outcome.
I have retained photographs and correspondence relating to the issues described above. I gave the company the opportunity to resolve my complaint before submitting a dispute to ABTA and leaving a review, but unfortunately we were unable to reach an agreement. The company initially offered a £250 travel voucher, which was later converted to a cash offer and subsequently increased to £350. Given the nature of the issues raised and their impact on the holiday as a whole, I did not feel this adequately reflected my experience and loss of enjoyment.
Based on my experience, I would not choose to book with this company again.
