My daughter has recently started with…

My daughter has recently started with Tom and the team and she has loved every lesson so far. Tom is very patience and calm with the young pupils he teaches and the lessons are always fun, enjoyable and developmental. My daughters behaviour and listen skills are improving at home as a result of attending her jujitsu lessons.

Thank you Tom

Tom and Sarah are superb instructors

Every training session is fun and the learning is perfectly paced. You can train and get fit at a level which suits you - it's not just a case of practicing the same move for the entire session, with no thought as to who might be falling behind or who needs to go faster. They have all the knowledge in their heads ready to answer any questions, and are skilled across multiple disciplines. Each session begins with a five to ten minute warmup, then the rest is practice, with regular grading sessions too.1

Mat-eating fun for all the family

I am a current student at Kogen Ryu, which I attend with my teenage son. I am a martial artist with 20 years experience, mainly in Aikido with bits of Ju-Jitsu, MMA and Judo thrown in for good measure. My son has never done anything like this before. We both get something out of the classes.

Tom and Sarah are lovely people. You could not ask for a warmer, more approachable and fun loving couple to teach you martial arts. For the beginner who is a bit nervous of all the shouting and angry pajama wearing, I can recommend this as a really welcoming place to start your journey.

The club ethos is not super strict and traditional. There is less bowing and more inspirational rock music than I'm used to. A working knowledge of Japanese is not required. For the person who worries they don't know how to be mystical and Kung-Fuey - you'll like it here.

Students are encouraged to train hard, but everyone is allowed to work at their own pace. Being less young than I used to be, and having eaten more pies than was probably good for me I am still able to access the classes. For the person who worries they're not fit enough for martial arts - they got you covered.

They have crash mats for landing on and only really try to punch you in the face when you ask them to. For the person worried that this is going to hurt - only a little ;-)

The group currently is mostly beginners. They are also super friendly and welcoming people. For the person worried that everyone will be really experienced - they are just like you.

Tom and Sarah are secretly quite hard. I've been around the block a few times, and they have a good wider group and welcome visiting instructors. For the hardcore experienced martial artist wanting a challenge - this is maybe not ideal for you, but the group is improving rapidly and there are private sessions on offer where you can really develop.

My son is a teenager and that tells you a little about me by implication. For those of you thinking you might be too old or too young for martial arts - you're not come down.

Thanks for reading all the way down. Hopefully see you on the mat soon.

Awesome self defence class

I have been attending kogen ryu for a few months now on a weekly basis and honestly I love it.
I have learned valuable self defence techniques and feel safer in my day to day life because of it.
The instructors/sensei are so good they are friendly, patient (I'm a slow learner) and encouraging.
If you are interested in martial arts and self defence these are the guys you want 🙂
