I Made a Mistake, But Ledger Allowed a Swap to an Old Recovery Phrase Without Warning

I accept that I made a mistake, but Ledger should have warned me before allowing this transaction.
After setting up my Ledger device again with a new recovery phrase, I did not realize that Ledger Wallet was still showing an old Bitcoin account from my previous recovery phrase under the same name.
On June 27, 2026, I used the normal swap functionality to convert WBTC to native BTC. Ledger Wallet automatically directed the BTC to the old “Bitcoin 1” account, which belonged to my previous recovery phrase — a recovery phrase I no longer have.
The BTC was sent to:
bc1q9wewue5njfyghk8twylk2zny6rnuurnzn549u4
TXID:
3fc627b7067cb19fdaebaf8257a748e982ab7dbdf9fc8ad2b2656afa060e4195
The transaction is confirmed on-chain and the 977,035 sats remain unspent.
I only discovered the problem later, when I tried to send BTC to this account again. Ledger Wallet then showed:
“WrongDeviceForAccountRefund: This sending account does not belong to the device you have connected.”
That was when I realized the account belonged to my previous recovery phrase. By then, the swap was already completed and the BTC had been sent to the old account.
The amount is approximately 0.01 BTC. It is not a huge amount, but it was meaningful to me because I regularly set money aside each month to accumulate Bitcoin as long-term savings.
I fully accept that I should have noticed the old account. However, I believe Ledger Wallet should have detected the mismatch and clearly warned me before sending funds to an account belonging to a different recovery phrase.
What concerns me most is that the application can detect this mismatch, as shown by the “WrongDeviceForAccountRefund” error, but apparently did not detect it before the swap payout.
At minimum, I believe the app should have warned me that the destination account belonged to a different recovery phrase, or required confirmation on the Ledger device before proceeding.
This was not a case where I manually copied and confirmed the wrong Bitcoin address. The application itself selected the destination account during the swap.
I have contacted Ledger and requested clarification regarding the swap provider and swap ID, whether the payout address was verified on the device, why the old account remained available, whether Ledger Recover was enabled, and why the transaction still appears as “Pending” despite being confirmed on-chain.
I accept responsibility for my mistake, but I believe Ledger Wallet should have provided an appropriate security warning before that mistake became an irreversible loss. For a hardware wallet company focused on security, I believe this deserves a serious explanation and investigation.

Hello Uxell, we're truly sorry this happened. We know these were savings you'd been building month by month, so whatever the amount, we understand how upsetting it is to see them land somewhere you can't access. Thank you for laying out the details so clearly.

Here's what we believe happened:

- Why the old account was still visible: Ledger Wallet stores accounts locally in the app. Accounts from a previous recovery phrase can stay listed after you set up your device with a new one, unless they're removed or the app is reset.

- Why the swap went through: During a swap, Ledger Wallet sends the payout to the receive account selected in the app. If that account belongs to a different recovery phrase that's still listed, the mismatch isn't always detected at that stage. It's reliably caught only when signing a transaction from that account with the connected device, which is why the "WrongDeviceForAccountRefund" message only appeared later.

- Related safeguard: In some cross-phrase scenarios, especially with passphrases, Ledger Wallet shows a "Receive address does not belong to this Ledger device" warning. Unfortunately, it doesn't trigger in every case, including cached accounts like this one. More here: https://support.ledger.com/article/E13-Receive-address-does-not-belong-to-this-Ledger-device

We fully understand your point that a clear warning should have appeared before the swap, and we've shared your feedback with our product team.

What may still be possible:

- Your BTC is still unspent at that address. If there's any chance you still have your previous 24-word recovery phrase, whether written down, stored as a backup, or used on another device, restoring it on any Ledger device would give you access to the funds again.

- If your previous phrase was ever backed up with Ledger Recover, that backup could also restore access. Our support team can help confirm this.

- If you've ever restored a 12- or 18-word phrase from another wallet onto your Ledger, restoring that exact phrase could also match. Details here: https://support.ledger.com/article/360025322153-zd

Without the original phrase or a matching backup, unfortunately the funds can't be moved.

For your other questions, such as the swap provider, the swap ID, and why the transaction still shows as "Pending," our support team can look into your specific case. Feel free to share your ticket number here so we can make sure it's followed up, or reach out as explained here: https://support.ledger.com/contact-us

To help prevent this in the future:

- After setting up a new recovery phrase, remove any old accounts from Ledger Wallet (or reset the app) and re-add your accounts with your current device.

- Give your accounts distinct names so older and current accounts are easy to tell apart, guide: https://support.ledger.com/article/16706751285917-zd

Before confirming a swap, double-check which account is selected to receive the funds.

We're sorry again for the stress this has caused, and we're here to help however we can.

Very disappointing experience overall

Very disappointing experience overall. I purchased six Ledger devices, and both of the Nano S devices I kept have now developed the same severe display failure despite extremely limited use. Support ultimately offered no meaningful remedy beyond promotions already available to Nano owners. The support process was also frustrating, requiring multiple bot interactions and two human agents after the first chat was interrupted. This experience has significantly reduced my confidence in Ledger products and the company’s willingness to stand behind them.

--
RESPONSE TO LEDGER: I already went through your support process and spoke with two human agents. After all of that, the only “solution” offered was the standard Nano owner promotion already available to existing customers. The fact that Ledger has a standing discount specifically for Nano owners also does little to reassure me, as it gives the impression that display/device failures may be a fairly widespread issue. Sending me back to the same support team does not address the problem raised in this review.

Since posting this review, I have switched to Trezor because this experience left me with no confidence in Ledger products or in the company’s willingness to stand behind them.

Poor billing and accounting support.

So if you're looking for a cold wallet, definitely a quality product and interface in those regards. However my one star review comes from the lack of transparency with how billing and accounting is held. Having paid for the recovery service since 2022, I only recently ran into the issue that it would not let me change my subscription type to cancel after finally moving what was left on the cold wallet. Come to find out that it unfortunately wouldn't let me log in and kept me in a vicious Loop of unable to reactivate the account I'm logged into as it wasn't in the system. After contacting customer service, the only options would be to confirm my order confirmation from email which the only one I had was from Amazon or email that apparently wasn't looking for the one that I logged in with and will still locked in with.

All those inconveniences aside my biggest issue is when asked to verify the billing such as cards used to show that I have been paying and willing to provide bank statement showing, the company was little to no help with removing the recurring payment. Therefore if I did not catch this service that I have been paying the base price for or ready to just move on from it, it would have charged me until the end of time theoretically. Of course you can go ahead and order a new card but you shouldn't have to when you contact a company to remove a card from their system knowing you've already verified yourself. They claimed that the account doesn't exist yet I was able to show screenshots that since 2022 was I an active member and was ready to provide banking information showing the initial charges for the recovery account that match that year. Yet was still met with the same two options to either use the order subscription code given or email as if there was any other email I have. So I'd advise if you are going to use their cold wallet double check how you have payment services set up but understand they will not go out of their way to help you resolve your billing issues if your experiences anything like what I experienced. Customer service was polite but ineffective for this issue as it felt just like the standard run around which is disappointing.

Edit on 10SEP26:

Case number for this issue is as follows: Case 00276773

I will respond to that associated email address as I am not confident in using the live agent feature as it would not be a good use of my time after the last experience. Nevertheless, thank you for the response to the initial review. This only further proving the quality customer service that does exist.

Thank you for the feedback Dante, and we're sorry for the run-around on this. Not being able to cancel a subscription you're paying for isn't an acceptable outcome, and we'd like to fix it.

One point worth clarifying: Ledger Recover launched in 2023, so a subscription from 2022 would be tied to a different service, which may explain why our team couldn't match the account to the details given.

Please share your ticket number here if you have one, or contact us via https://support.ledger.com/contact-us and ask the chat assistant to connect you to a live agent or open an email ticket. Mention the Amazon purchase and that you have payment records to hand.

We're available to help and want to get this closed properly for you.

Thank you.

My money was stolen from my account

My money was stolen from my account. Response from Ledger support: my 24 words password wasnt used, it was ME who sent the money to an account. I find this resolution of the issue super unreasonable since i know my actions, I never send anything anywhere but my own wallet address. I suppose you have security problem if a random person can send anything from my wallet not using my 24 words password-according to you and especially not using the physical flesh. Zero atttempts to broaden investigation except for addressing the complaint to the police. Thanks for the advice

Hello Alina, we're sincerely sorry to hear about this:

A Ledger device cannot send funds on its own. Every on‑chain transfer requires either:
(a) approval on the device with the correct PIN
(b) use of the 24‑word recovery phrase on another device/wallet or (c) prior smart‑contract approvals that let a dApp move tokens later (common on EVM chains). Ledger or anyone else cannot reverse blockchain transactions.

What to do now (priority):
1) Stop using the exposed account(s).
2) Set up a new 24‑word recovery phrase on your Ledger (choose “Set up as new”), then add fresh accounts in Ledger Wallet.
3) Move any remaining assets to the new accounts.
4) If on Ethereum/BSC/Polygon etc., check and revoke token approvals (e.g., via Etherscan’s Token Approvals). This removes lingering permissions that might have enabled outflows.
5) File a police report with all tx hashes and timestamps. This is the only path to potentially recover stolen funds. Guidance and full steps: support.ledger.com/article/7624842382621-zd

We are available to help with on-chain analysis, please reach out as explained here: https://support.ledger.com/contact-us

$20,000 USDT Stuck: Zero help from Ledger Support despite providing technical Logs as proof.

I am extremely disappointed with Ledger’s support (Your case number: 00225455 ,00224290 ,00224359). I have 20,000 USDT stuck in a wallet address (TVZAvWoqsR17Q2UraHsEZDvet4rhUneJ9D) that Ledger Live no longer recognizes, despite it being visible in my logs previously.

Key issues:
1. My 24-word recovery phrase is correct and was tested multiple times.
2. I provided full technical LOGS showing that Ledger Live recognized the account before, but now fails to link it to the physical device for signing transactions.
3. Following Ledger’s FAQ made the situation worse: after deleting the account to re-add it, the software no longer finds the address during the scan.
4. Total silence from support for weeks.

For a company managing high-value assets, this level of customer service is unacceptable. I need a technician to help me find the specific derivation path or software conflict that is hiding my funds. I have provided all the proof, yet no one helps.

Hello Luis,

Thank you for your feedback, and we completely understand how stressful this can be.

From what you described, there are two common reasons an address may not appear after re-adding accounts in Ledger Live:

Different seed or passphrase:

If the device was reset or set up “as new,” it will generate a new set of addresses. Accounts tied to a previous 24-word recovery phrase (or a passphrase/“25th word”) won’t appear.

If you used the Passphrase feature, those accounts only reappear when the exact same passphrase is enabled.

Different account type or derivation path:

For EVM chains, the same seed can generate multiple paths. If the account was originally added under a different path or index, a standard scan might miss it.

What you can try:

Check your seed and passphrase: ensure the passphrase (if used) matches exactly. If you have the older 24-word phrase, try restoring it on a spare Ledger to rescan.

Re-add accounts carefully: select the correct network (e.g., TRON USDT (TRC20)), open the corresponding app, and let Ledger Live scan.

Double-check your address externally—your funds remain on-chain even if the account doesn’t show up.

Usually, a zero balance in Ledger Live means the seed or passphrase doesn’t match the account. Once the correct combination is used, the address and funds will reappear.

We see that your case is being handled by our support team, and we appreciate your patience.

Thank you!

Ledgerpremium is illegaal and criminal busy.

In my previous review, I unnecessarily accused Ledger of stalking and scamming. This accusation should be forwarded to Ledgerpremium. It's a company that pressures people to invest in Bitcoin and the like through them. If you want to leave, they become stalkers. I get calls every day. They're abusing Ledger's good name. I block all the numbers, but they call from a different number every time. Their email address is 'support(@)lpremium.support'. They don't answer, but call you right away to pressure you again. Their website is client.ledgerpremium.com. Their numbers start with +3185208… Don't answer, but block their number and mention cramming. Perhaps Ledger can silence them by using their company name without permission. You've been warned.

Hello J, thank you for sharing this.

These are not Ledger employees. Please be cautious of scammers and impersonators who may contact you via email, direct messages, or even phone calls. Ledger never initiates unsolicited contact with users.

Additionally, neither Ledger nor the genuine Ledger Live application will ever ask for your 24-word recovery phrase. Any person, message, or website requesting this information is without exception a scam. Always follow best security practices to keep your assets safe.

My name, Address and Wallet type exposed to public

Ledger literally in 2026 exposed my names, address, wallet type (as someone who purchased a Ledger from them directly) was lost in a data breach. My Name, address and what hardware wallet I purchased. So I await people at my door with wrenches to rob me. Thank you very much! I am already getting targeted emails and phishing within 2 weeks of the breach. You should be ashamed. Why did you not email me to tell me about this.

Hello Andy, we're really sorry for the stress this has caused. To clarify: the January 2026 incident involved Global‑e (our checkout partner for some Ledger.com orders). It impacted order-related data (name, postal address, email, phone, and product/price). No payment info, no seed/recovery phrase, no device secrets or balances were exposed, and your crypto remains safe on your device.

About notification: impacted customers were notified by Global‑e directly on January 5 from no-reply@global-e.com with subject “An important notification from Global-e regarding unauthorized access to data.” Please check spam/junk and any filtered folders. If you didn’t receive it and think you were affected, you can contact Global‑e here: https://www.global-e.com/contact-us/

What you can do now:
- Be vigilant with phishing: Ledger will never ask for your 24 words, PIN, or to sign blind/unknown transactions. If in doubt, don’t click.
- Report suspected phishing impersonating Ledger to phishing@ledger.fr (forward the message and URLs).

Thank you

Thank you. I already contacted Ledger Support via the official channel and my case is open: #00223297.

I’m following up here because I have not received any meaningful update for some time, and the situation remains unresolved.

The core issue is that the Ledger Live integrated partner (Changelly) has kept the funds under “compliance review” since Dec 2023 with no ETA or final decision, despite full cooperation and document submission.

Could you please confirm that case #00223297 is escalated to the appropriate partner/escalations team, and request from Changelly either:
1) a concrete completion timeframe, or
2) a refund to the original sending address if they cannot conclude the review?

I can provide any additional details privately through the ticket.

Thank you.

What makes this more frustrating is you cannot talk to anyone at ledger and the level of professionalism in this support is minimal.

Zero customer service.

Zero customer service.
I own a ledger nano s for 7 years now, used it 10 times and now the background light is barely visible. Its probably designed poorly , maybe on purpose but that i dont know, i just know many people have the low light issue. So i was even willing to pay fo a new one. So i did. But for some reasons they refunded my money and said there is a payment issue, so i wanted to know more details. But then they replied in an standard answer and asked me to write to support, i tried their link and after going through AI answers i wanted to talk to a chat, but they wanted an email address and said i have to fill it in below, buuuuuut there was nothing below😂 see screenshot, maybe an issue for android users but they are really a shitty company...

Don't recommend

My Ledger wallet's screen is so dim now that it's not usable anymore. I did online searches and apparently this is "normal" for Ledger wallets and the "fix" is to buy a new Ledger wallet.

On top of my poor experience with my wallet, Ledger also famously got hacked so now I always get spam crypto emails in my inbox because my email address is all over the dark web thanks to their lack of security.

Will not do business with them again no matter what. Don't recommend.

Lame Ledger Lacks Lustre

I bought a brand new Ledger Nano S several years ago and never used it. I recently opened the box and tried to set it up, only to experience software and USB connection issues preventing its use. I put in a support ticket over a month ago and only got calls from a spammer saying they were from Ledger Support, saying I first needed to update my Coinbase account. Many months before that, I received dozens of emails from spammers who knew my full name, address, phone number, product purchased, and date. I suspect Ledger was hacked or the information was sold out the back door. Either way, I am very disappointed with Ledger, their website, software, hardware, lack of security, and so-called support. I will now buy another cold storage wallet that works, is secure, and comes with real support if needed.

STEER CLEAR OF THESE AMATEURS!

These amateurs provided hackers access my personal contact details (telephone, address, and email) and as a direct result of their ineptitude I constantly receive phishing attempts. This company can't even protect their own data so how on earth could you trust their products with yours? This company is, without question, the worst I've ever had the misfortune to buy from. Never again! HUGE MISTAKE!

Responding to reply: It's a pity Ledger wasn't adequately focussed on security back in 2020. For the record I bought directly from Ledger hence it was customers details you comprised, not simply marketing. Why you kept customer details on a system connected to the internet (and thus prone to being hacked) astounds me.

What's more Ledger did not even have the decency to contact your customers and tell them their details had potentially been obtained once aware of said breach. I only discovered it after various scammers reached out to me. Following which I ran a web search and discovered the hack. Ledger simply buried your head in the sand, assumedly hoping it went away. And just because your partners were involved does not change anything. Ledger choose the partner (we didn't have a say) and Ledger failed to do the appropriate level of due diligence on the partners security. This speaks volumes in regard to the care (or lack thereof) you took with our personal data.

How about we leak the names, addresses and telephone numbers of ledger staff onto the dark web? Would you be okay with that? Yes they might not have access to your crypto but you would be exposed to preventable and unnecessary risk for which you had had zero responsibility for.

Bottom line - Ledger failed its customers. Ledger exposed our details to scammers. Ledger failed to proactively inform us as soon as you knew our details had been comprised. As a direct result your customers continue to be targets for scammers and you couldn't really give two hoots. That's the reality. And all of these empty words and 'empathy' don't change that. That's the facts of the matter!

Hello Garry, thank you for reaching out.

We’re absolutely relentless when it comes to privacy and data security. The 2020 marketing database breach was a serious incident that exposed some customer contact details, We empathize deeply with those affected. However, it’s important to note that your crypto remained untouched. The breach was not entirely on Ledger's side, as it involved our providers.

Since then, we’ve worked tirelessly to fortify every layer of our system, treating it like an impenetrable vault. Whatever noise you hear out there, tune it out. Your Ledger device isolates and protects your private keys like a fortress, and our system is designed with zero access to your financial data— not even we can access it.

Bottom line: your crypto is yours, and only yours—we are committed to ensuring that such an incident does not happen again.

Avoid Ledger at All Costs

I purchased a Ledger Nano X as a gift, and it failed without ever being used—no assets loaded onto it.

The issue? A known battery fault that Ledger refuses to properly address outside their standard warranty period. Their customer support was dismissive, offering nothing more than a discount for a replacement of their already faulty product.

(UPDATE) Read LEDGER's response below - Please contact support for assistance. I reached out to them (again) and they said, NOPE our policy is the same. So don't place any weight to their token comments below.

A company that claims to be a global leader in crypto security should stand behind its products, especially when flaws are widely acknowledged. Instead, Ledger hides behind weak policies and poor management decisions. I’ll never buy or recommend Ledger again, and I’ll make sure others in the crypto community know to avoid them too.

I spent over a week talking to Ledger support (ticket# Ledger Support - Case 00087750), only to be told "to bad, these are our policies".

If these were cars, they would all be recalled, repaired or replaced.

Not only have I been affected by their customer data breach, but now I have to deal with being shipped products with a known fault which are inoperable and low/no customer support.

Look elsewhere for reliability—Ledger has lost all credibility. I’ve switched to Tangem.

So easy to use in comparison and as it doesn’t have a battery (with a known battery issue such as a Ledger) and it also comes with a 25-year warranty.

Since buying a Tangem 3 card pack for myself and setting it up, I’ve bought 4 more (3 card packs) for my kids.

Shame Ledger doesn’t stand behind their faulty products. I suppose it’s a win for Tangem though.

Bought a brand new Ledger just over 2…

Bought a brand new Ledger just over 2 years ago. No issues at all until this past summer. I noticed it wouldn't hold a charge as well as before.. Fast forward to yesterday and the device won't even turn on. I contacted customer care, only to find out "unfortunately this is outside the warranty window." Funny thing how it starts malfunctioning shortly after warranty window ends. I did get an offer for 50 EUR off my next purchase though... So I can find myself back here in the same boat with their faulty hardware again I suppose? On top of that I can't use the discount with the Black Friday sales... Please be sure to check other companies when purchasing a cold wallet, as Ledger isn't reputable.

P.S. Don't give me the generic "Hello Dylan, thank you for sharing your feedback. We want to assure you that we're here to help. For the best support and to address your concerns effectively, we encourage you to reach out directly to our dedicated team via support.ledger.com.

We truly appreciate your patience and cooperation, and we're committed to resolving your issue promptly!"

As I have already done this and you clearly stated what you were going to do. Don't try and save face on here pretending you want to help.

Hello Dylan,

We're sorry to hear about your experience, but we’re glad to see that you were offered a discount for your next device. Please note that during site-wide sales events like Black Friday, discount codes are temporarily disabled, as the sales event pricing takes precedence.

If you need any further assistance, feel free to reach out.
Wishing you a wonderful day ahead!
