Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 28 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Consumers frequently complain about unhelpful staff who rely heavily on rigid, repetitive scripts, making callers feel completely ignored and dismissed during critical moments of intense personal distress. People also mention frustratingly long wait times, unhelpful generic responses, and abrupt communication that often leaves vulnerable individuals feeling entirely unsupported when they desperately need help the most. Though some reviewers noted occasional positive experiences, mentioning that certain dedicated staff members and supervisors offered gentle validation, comforting conversations, and thoughtful guidance during their darkest times. These customers appreciated the genuine human connection and empathy provided during those brief moments.

As useful as a wet sock to an amputee

About as useful as a wet sock on an amputee. Contacted them for advice twice in two days. Both times got told they couldn't give me advice but "here, have another helpline contact," just to extend the process of communicating "go to hospital," who look at you sideways because you're limbs aren't falling off, wait 6 hours to get told to "talk to your loved ones," and leave with a bill. Get bent.

Useless

You basically don’t even need experience for this type of job they really take on any idiot applying to the helpline, was expressing how I’ve been feeling my situation has been harming me for my entire life and it keeps getting harder and harder everyday and all they say back is “that sounds hard” “that’s a long time”, you’re supposed to help people not state the obvious when they’re in need of help

Lifeline is a joke..

Calling lifeline recently was a complete waste of time.. I constructed my story (which was a little long) and tried copying and sending it through to them by text 3 times without success. Each time I tried to construct my response, a generic type message would appear saying if they didn't hear from me in a couple of minutes, they would end the conversation. Cause that sort of response is always helpful, NOT! They don't bother to read what you are trying to tell them and then respond with a message that seems to be plucked from a checklist. Could be talking to AI for all you know. Not an actual human with feelings... never again!

A crisis service that doesn't care if youre in crisis

So when other services dont want to help when in crisis you are told to contact lifeline.

They paraphrase everything you say and couldn't care less if you are in crisis and feeling intensely suicidal.

For all they know after the conversation last night, I could be dead. But they don't care, just like many others.

They are part of a problem of a broken system.

No point calling.

Thought I was talking to someone confidently, turns out the moment you call them they get your number and inform the police "without talk of self harm" and I had my doors kicked in and assaulted only for the police to simply then walk out with out saying g a word. LIFE LINE ARE A DISGRACE!

Pathetic

Pathetic, useless, untrained. Average speed to answer a call was 26 mins, Absolutely disgusting for a suicide prevention service. They don't obviously read the reviews so would encourage anyone to complain direct to Lifeline and demand the CEO's details. I wonder if media etc are aware this is not a suicide prevention service!!?

Please go into Lifeline complaints. I have made my points clear to them directly. I implore you to do the same. How else do we activate change!

I am so disgusted.

Absolutely a waste of time

Absolutely a waste of time.
The fact that this is the only help for people suffering emotionally is astounding.
I tried to chat online and the lady was ignoring half of what I said but perked up the second I mentioned ending my life, to which she kept pressing rather than actually answering anything I was saying.
I then tried to call as I thought maybe that would be more personal, waited forever on hold with their life-ending hold music.
Unacceptable and no wonder the suicide rate is going up.

Repetition

Although they only took about 10 mins to pick up - the lady who responded just kept repeating my words and honestly I just felt worse after calling. I understand that there are many individuals who struggle with mental health therefore it may take a while for them to answer, but the lady speaking to me make me sound like I was stupid and waste of time

Bad, arrogant people

A truly appalling use of public funds. Awful, hateful women treating men like dirt is not a helpline. Lifeline are accountable to no one, they behave however they wish & cause men in distress to feel worse. I pray God exists as these charlatans need to be held accountable and will never be in this world.

Not a nice one

These Mental Health Scammers have set up shop in Northern Ireland too. Where they operate in a similar obstructive and self serving way to the way many of the reviews indicative they do in Australia. I spoke to a woman called Francis who was obsessed with getting my details and got off on obstructing me form opening up because I wasn't ready to give my personal details and she did not seem like someone I'd even want to give my Email address. too. Totally robotic and obnoxious , when she got challenged she ended the call as common with people of that numb skull mentality , She said she wasn't hear to take abusive language. Thats a new scam line they use when you say your not happy with their conduct.
Another terrible mental health crisis line that pay no care to the health in the tittle.

Be fair!

Yes I've had a bad experience way in the past but called today at 4am and the guy couldn't have been nicer or understanding.
Congratulations to him for doing this FOR FREE at this time of the night!
Reduced my anxiety and depression markedly.
So if you get a bad one hang up and keep trying.
Obviously they can't give out information!
They're for support only!

Why bother if there is no help.

I rang in with cPTSD and wanted help to get through it. I could hardly hear the man talk, he was repeating my words. He offered no assistance in any way and then said it is time to hang up. I was still in tears. What a waste of time trying to reach out to Lifeline. I'd have been better off talking to a chook. At least it might have responded more. I believe the guy should get training lessons or another job. Why bother with this useless service anymore. No way!!!

An absolute WASTE of a phone call !

An absolute WASTE of a phone call, time and a kick in the guts when every suicide mentioned on the news that refers to this pathetic service 🙄. Any wonder statistics of suicide are rising if this crap is the offer of assistance!!!
Cut the head off the snake !
The inherent reasons lie with the government of which cause such a failure to exist happily and comfortably in this political country, which was once wonderful. Immigrants and dole bludgers are the winners.

Lifeline are absolutely pathetic

Lifeline are absolutely pathetic, you may as well be talking to a brick wall. If I didn't want to kill myself before the call I certainly wanted to after. An absolute joke.
