Game is over
We started a startup company and lost our major business because of Lycos customer service agents and their recklessness ,they don't respond to customer requests and they always owns their own answer.
Outrageous amounts of downtime, sub-standard customer service, and frequently under cyber attack - don't go there!
I have been a long-time customer of Lycos Domains via their Tripod brand since shortly after I became computer literate in 2002. I became interested in building web sites and, after shopping around, settled upon Tripod because of the easy-to use site builder (Trellix), their free sub-domains, and the ability to upgrade to a premium site hosting package and pay monthly (with domain address included) with just a few clicks and a credit card. At the time, they were on the cutting edge - this was back when the Carnegie Mellon IT Dept was still associated with running the brand. Since then, it has changed hands a couple of times, and the last and current owners are running the brand into the ground. During the last 6 months my business site has been down completely for nearly 6 days total - 3.5 days in July, and 2.5 days from October 28 to the 30th of this year. That's more downtime than my site had been down collectively all the previous years combined, and there has been no offer in the way of account credit for the outrageous amount of downtime. They don't seem to get that their customers lost tons of money due to their business sites being down - undefined tens of thousands of dollars, I'm sure. In July, the outage turned out to be caused by a massive data transfer to an upgraded server, but they gave no one any warning before they started the data migration. The entire network, including the Lycos brand site, was down. Customers thought that the brand was out of business, and panic and a mass exodus ensued after the servers came back up. Some site owners had over 10 business sites hosted there, and lost massive amounts of money. In October there were email notices sent out that there was to be another server data migration from October 28th to the 31st, but they assured paying customers that their sites would not go down. I have a premium web hosting package, and my site was down from the 28th to sometime early on the 30th. Before that week, I was about half way through building a new phone-friendly web site there (time to get rid of the Trellix and old standard html platform) when suddenly I could no longer edit the site builder to finish work on it. I submitted a support ticket and asked that Tech Support go into my site builder (Zeeblio) and fix whatever bug was causing the problem, so I could finish my new site. It's now mid November, and the problem STILL has not been resolved, and my ticket is being ignored - they won't even tell me if they can fix it or not. At this point, I'm assuming my work is lost. On top of everything else, I'm getting notices that they have been under constant cyber attacks - especially the domain mail. Ybrant Digital are the owners now, and they have mismanaged the brand so much it has gone to the dogs. I have also read through service-related searches that Ybrant filed bankruptcy regarding the Lycos Domains brand, which is now worth substantially less than the nearly 30 million dollar price tag they paid for it, although I have not been able to obtain any updated information on their bankruptcy status. To top everything off, I just recently discovered by accident that the domain registrar, MelbourneIT, published my private cell number and address in relation to my web ownership - I have been paying all along to have that information kept private through Lycos Domains, and am mortified that it was published for public consumption. As a consequence, I have been receiving an ungodly amount of spam/scam calls on my cell phone. Fortunately, the address listed was an old P.O. box, or otherwise I'd be worried about my safety at home, too.
I am in the process of finding out how to transfer my domain to another registrar, as well as finding a new host for my site. I cannot stay with a company that mishandles my private information and my livelihood via my business site - I could not afford to stay if the service were free. It's definitely not worth the $12.95 per month that I have been paying since 2007.
Lycos was a beautiful thing in the early days but, now it's a business owner's nightmare as far as hosting, service, and security is concerned. I would not recommend them to anyone. They get 1 star simply because my site is currently up and running (knock on wood). There are so many better and safer options out there.
Used to be good - But these days you should go elsewhere.
Lycos used to be an industry standard, but today the company is pretty much in shambles. At one point, Lycos was poised to be the big competitor with Yahoo (this was before Google emerged and virtually destroyed the competition), and their web hosting service was top notch. Creating/Editing a website was easy, efficient, and the websites were stable.
Oh how the mighty have fallen. This past month alone, my Angelfire site has : 1) Disappeared off the face of the earth for 4 days, with no response from customer service. 2) Had an additional 3 days of down time for "Upgrades". 3) Tried to tell me that I was not a paying customer (when in fact, I have been for 1 year and 9 months, with 3 months remaining on my current subscription. 4) Ignored all my attempts to contact them by email and submitting tickets. 5) Not offered any kind of compensation for the large amount of down time imposed by these problems.
I've also heard a TON of complaints about Lycos mail. Despite being severely outgunned by Gmail, many folks still use their @Lycos.com emails. Those folks have had email down for as much as 2 weeks, had their storage capacity reduced from 3gb to 500mb, and endured the same lack of customer service as I have (see the comments on the Facebook group "Lycos Customer Service" for more on this subject).
If Lycos doesn't get it together, it's only a matter of time before they lose their entire client base. The less-patient ones have left long ago, and the more-patient ones are soon to follow. I'm not sure which category I fall in, but as soon as possible I'm out the door. We had a good run, Lycos, and I thank you for 1.5 good years, but I can't recommend that anybody start a website or email account with them until these issues are resolved.
Lycos doesn't seem to care that I am losing business because of them...
I checked my website two weeks before a big art show to be sure it was working properly and found that it was down. I discovered that due to an expired credit card on the auto renew, and an old email address (I had previously told them what the new one was, but foolishly didn't double-check to make sure they changed it) my domain had expired. I repurchased the domain name and that part went fairly smoothly and customer service was helpful. I didn't realize that I needed to enter the dns settings at first so the site still wasn't working, my ignorance to blame. I entered the dns settings and submitted them and waited for for things to work, but after twelve days and many pleas to fix the problem (they said there's a technical issue but no longer respond with any updates or information when I contact them) I still don't have a working site...so basically I handed out a ton of cards at the show with a website and email that don't work. At this point I'm sure any potential customers have given up trying to access the site or just forgotten about it. I'm very frustrated and urge you to look elsewhere as the customer service is very, very bad when you are having a problem.
Terrible Email
Lycos mail used to be great. In recent years it has deteriorated to a point where I can't use it anymore. Very slow, continual login and site certification problems and on top of that they charge you for POP/IMAP. This is where I send all my spam and only have to check occasionally nowadays. Avoid.
used to be great
lycos used to be the best website for searching and chat. Seems to have disappeared off the map now
Not even average
I remember Lycos as excellent website with independent policy. Obviously nothing that is good lasts long on Internet.
