⭐ DO NOT BUY A "LIFETIME" LICENSE FROM MACPAW - IT'S A TRAP
In 2018 I did what any sensible person would do - I paid for a LIFETIME license for CleanMyMac X. Lifetime. As in, forever. As in, I should never have to pay again.
Fast forward to 2024 and MacPaw have pulled the oldest trick in the book.
They've released a "new" version - conveniently dropping the X from the name - and are now AGGRESSIVELY pressuring existing lifetime license holders to hand over MORE money. Six years after I already paid for life.
This is not an upgrade. This is a cynical, deliberate business model designed to extract money from loyal customers who trusted the word "lifetime" to mean what it says in the dictionary.
MacPaw have done this MULTIPLE TIMES throughout their history. Lifetime licenses for earlier versions were similarly abandoned when CleanMyMac X launched. The pattern is clear, it is documented, and it is a choice.
I am not alone. Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and Apple's own community forums are full of customers who have been through exactly this. MacPaw's response every time? A discount on repurchasing. The product they already paid for. For life.
Do yourself a favour - subscribe annually if you must use this software, because a "lifetime" license from MacPaw lasts precisely as long as it suits them. You have been warned.

"One-Time Purchase" Lifetime License — MacPaw refuses to honor cross-version compatibility
I purchased a CleanMyMac X - Plan for 2 Macs - One-Time Purchase in March 2022 via Paddle (Receipt #35198005, CA$120.69).
In early 2026, MacPaw notified me that macOS Tahoe will be the last macOS version supported by CleanMyMac X, and that I must pay again to upgrade to the new "CleanMyMac" for future compatibility.
I contacted MacPaw support and raised the following points:
My official Paddle receipt contains no disclosure of any version or macOS compatibility limitation
The only "evidence" MacPaw provided was a small hover tooltip on their store page and a Knowledge Base article — neither of which constitutes clear pre-purchase disclosure
MacPaw's own history shows they previously provided free major version upgrades (CleanMyMac → 2 → 3 → X) to Lifetime license holders, establishing a clear precedent
Despite multiple escalations over several weeks, MacPaw's response has been to offer a 40% discount on repurchase — which does not address the core issue of a Lifetime purchase being rendered incompatible without adequate prior disclosure.
I will file a formal dispute with Paddle.com and will be pursuing additional remedies through my card issuer and Consumer Protection BC if unresolved.
I am sharing this experience so other customers can make an informed decision before purchasing any "Lifetime" or "One-Time Purchase" license from MacPaw.

Endless Indexing and Endless Billing
Apple confirms my experience on new mini, MacPaw software triggers endless indexing that takes up vast useable memory, to 140% and more and only way to fix it is to delete the software. Also, I was billed for a renewed year after cancelling and email confirming. Unethical and software can cause lots of downtime.

I am extremely grateful to the support team for their outstanding assistance. My issue was resolved within just 8 minutes — I received a detailed response very quickly, with clear step-by-step instructions on what needed to be done.
After purchasing a new MacBook, I wanted to continue using the software on my new device. However, I did not realize that I had previously downloaded the mobile version instead of the Mac version. The support team carefully explained the situation and provided screenshots showing exactly which link I needed to use and which version I should download in order to install CleanMyMac correctly on my new MacBook and continue using my existing subscription.
The guidance was precise, professional, and incredibly helpful. I truly appreciate the efficiency and clarity of the support I received.

Terrible experience with the Mac cleanmymac software and customer support and billing provider. Tried a free trial and was told I couldnt change my settings during trial then got charged annually a 105€ fee while I had chosen a monthly payment (their interface is very ambiguous when you 1st subscribe and then it is impossible to get your money back).
It was very long and tedious chat chatting with customer support to agree on a partial refund of 79,10€, the rest is lost probably to my 2 accounts because in the end I needed a maccleaner X and a maccleaner account which I also couldnt change during free trial.
20 days later still did not get my refund and I have to Keep in touch with their billing provider since they do not deal with the billing themselves !!!
Do not get answers to my questions (is customer service a mere AI bot ?) and am so frustrated, dissatisfied, losing so much time… now I Want to cancel my 2 monthly payments and leave this company for good. They managed to lose my trust entirely which is a shame since the software is fine but they dont value nor respect their customers money nor time !
Update : now it is even worse, after a few weeks without refund i have opened a paypal dispute for refund, using the 105 euros transaction, it has been closed down by paddle.net who did not even bother to read my forwarded screenshots and complaint, now paddle.net won't answer my emails asking for refund, macpaw has found this perfect alibi to pretend that my refund is blocked because i opened a dispute on paypal and i still have no refund and lost something like 4 hours with all these unuseful emails !
honestly i feel robbed my macpaw because i used cleanmymac for 1 day after the end of the free trial and i have all the money outside in spite of a promise of refund of 79,10 euros, nobody is telling me how to cancel the 2 licences (cleanmymac and cleanmymac X monthly payment) i exchanged the cleanmymac licence X2 for, and all that because they make false advertisement in the first place and make you believe you can change everything during free trial when you can't ! it is like my worst experience ever with a customer service and this will teach me not to offer my trust and money to some RANDOM software editor i find on the web !

MacPaw's Clean My Mac program was there when I needed it most as my MacBook Pro tanked. I had trouble activating, pulling hair out, but customer service rep was right there, responded immediately with a fix. I was able to run the program, free up memory etc - VERY VERY HAPPY WITH YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS!

I had trouble upgrading and as it turns out, I was trying to upgrade the wrong version. Customer service was all over it after I emailed them and explained my frustration. They were extremely courteous and super prompt with their reply. They at first explained why and then attached step by step instructions including links and screenshots on how to remove the old and get the new going. I am shocked at such incredible personal customer support, especially by a tech company. I have zero problem shouting MacPaw from the mountain tops!
